'Mastered the art of slogans, not solutions': Rahul Gandhi targets PM Modi over economic woes, says ‘Make in India' failing youth
NEW DELHI: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Saturday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning the success of the 'Make in India' initiative and accused him of focusing on catchy slogans rather than delivering real solutions to India's economic challenges.

In a post on X, Gandhi said, "'Make in India' promised a factory boom. So why is manufacturing at record lows, youth unemployment at record highs, and why have imports from China more than doubled? Modi ji has mastered the art of slogans, not solutions. Since 2014, manufacturing has fallen to 14% of our economy."
He highlighted that manufacturing has dropped to just 14% of the country's economy since 2014, the year the initiative was launched.
He also pointed to a sharp rise in imports from China, accusing the Union government of ignoring local industry in favour of catchy slogans.
Gandhi, LoP in Lok Sabha, also shared a video of his interaction with two young men, Shivam and Saif, in Nehru Place, New Delhi. He said the duo are skilled and full of potential but lack the opportunities to succeed in today's economic environment.

He further alleged that the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, once heavily promoted by the government, is now being quietly rolled back.
"With no new ideas, Modi ji has surrendered. Even the much-hyped PLI scheme is now being quietly rolled back. India needs a fundamental shift - one that empowers lakhs of producers through honest reforms and financial support,' Gandhi warned.

'We must stop being a market for others. If we don't build here, we'll keep buying from those who do. The clock is ticking, ' he added.
The Make in India initiative was launched by PM Modi in 2014 as part of a broader effort to drive nation-building and boost the manufacturing sector.

What Is the Proposal? The Karnataka government has proposed to amend the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1961, to increase daily working hours from nine to 10 hours in the state, and to allow up to 12 hours of work a day with overtime. The proposal, if approved, would also raise the quarterly overtime limit from 50 to 144 hours, according to The Hindu. The draft amendments, circulated by Karnataka's labour department to stakeholders, reportedly were aimed at aligning state regulations with directions from the Union government. It had asked all states to consider increasing working hour limits. What Do IT Employee Unions Say? The proposal has triggered strong resistance from IT employees' associations. The union representatives argue that such long workdays will increase stress, lower productivity, and violate the spirit of employee rights. Bengaluru, the country's biggest IT hub, is situated in Karnataka. The Karnataka State IT/ ITeS Employees Union on Wednesday strongly opposed the proposal and called upon 'the entire working class to come in resistance against the Karnataka government move to increase the working hours in IT/ITES/BPO sector to 12 hours a day." In a statement, the KITU said, 'The proposed amendment to the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act attempts to normalise a 12-hour work day. The existing Act only allows a maximum of 10 hours work per day, including overtime." It said the amendment will allow the companies to go for a two-shift system instead of the currently existing three shift system, and one third of the workforce will be through out from their employment. The KITU said, 'The proposal to amend the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishment Act to facilitate 12-hour working day is presented in a meeting called by the labour department on June 18, with various stakeholders in the industry." What Government Says Labour Minister Santosh Lad on June 19 issued a detailed statement explaining the government's intent behind the proposed amendment. In his clarification, Santosh Lad assured that the weekly 48-hour cap remains unchanged, and the proposal complies with International Labour Organization (ILO) standards and domestic labour laws. 'There is no violation of any international convention or standard," he stated. 'The 10-hour period is inclusive of a one-hour rest interval, meaning the active working time per day would remain 9 hours," he said. Currently, as per the current law under Section 7 of the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1961, the daily work limit is 9 hours, including a 1-hour break. However, with the proposed additional one hour a day, employees will get to choose five working days instead of six. He also said the proposal is currently under consultation, with stakeholder meetings already held, and no final decision has been made yet. 'The government of Karnataka is committed to the welfare of its entire workforce. We are in active dialogue with all stakeholders to ensure the final decision is holistic, balanced, and beneficial for all," he added. The labour department defended these proposals saying that the Union government has already 'directed" states to amend working hours limits. The department also said similar decision has been taken by Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand also, according to Deccan Herald. Priyank Kharge Asks Why MEA First Denied Him Clearance to Visit the US, Before Granting Permission Later
New Delhi: Congress leader and Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge on Saturday (June 21) said after initially denying him a clearance to visit the US, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has now granted him a clearance. Kharge questioned the reasons for this back and forth by the MEA and demanded an explanation. 'So in a U-turn, the Ministry of External Affairs has now decided to revoke its earlier decision and grant me a clearance for an official visit to the United States. I had sought permission on 15 May to travel between 14–27 June to represent the Government of Karnataka at two major global forums and over 25 official meetings with top companies, universities and institutions for collaborations and pitch for investments,' Kharge wrote on X on Saturday. Kharge added that the application for the visit of minister and officers' delegation to the US made on May 15 was rejected on June 4. Thereafter, another application for officers' delegation without Minister made on June 6 was cleared on June 11. 'My application was denied without any official explanation. On 19 June, I addressed a press conference, laying out the full chronology, questioning the basis of the denial and raising concerns about possible political interference. The matter was widely reported in the media. By the evening of the same day, the MEA revoked its earlier denial and issued a No Objection clearance dated 19 June,' said Kharge. He added that the clearance was received 36 days after his original application, 15 days after the official denial and five days after his scheduled departure. 'The timing raises serious questions: Why was the clearance denied in the first place? Was the previous order revoked to avoid accountability after the matter became public? What is the point of granting clearance after the key events are either over or nearing completion? Will the MEA now avoid explaining the original decision by pointing to the belated approval?' asked Kharge. Kharge was scheduled to attend the BIO International Convention in Boston and the Design Automation Conference (DAC) in San Francisco, Deccan Herald had earlier reported. 'While the Centre gives us slogans like 'Make in India,' 'Digital India', 'National Quantum Mission' and 'India AI Mission,' the real work to realise these aspirations is happening here in Karnataka. They coin the vision, but when we do the work to bring investments, create jobs and position India as a global leader – they block us,' he added. Kharge said that Karnataka deserves answer on the issue. 'The Prime Minister once said MAGA MIGA = MEGA. But what does that even mean in practice, when the very state driving India's tech and innovation engine is denied the support it needs to lead globally?' said Kharge.
