Wagaman, Sánchez HRs power the Marlins to an 8-3 victory that ends Phillies' 5-game win streak

MIAMI (AP) — Eric Wagaman and Jesús Sánchez homered as the Miami Marlins snapped a five-game home skid with an 8-3 win over the Phillies on Tuesday night, ending Philadelphia's five-game win streak.
Xavier Edwards had three hits and Javier Sanoja tripled and singled for the Marlins.
Nick Castellanos was benched by Phillies manager Rob Thomson on Tuesday for 'an inappropriate comment' the outfielder made after he was pulled for a defensive replacement in the series opener Monday. The benching ended Castellanos' streak of 236 consecutive starts.
Edwards' RBI single capped a three-run sixth that put Miami ahead 5-3. Phillies reliever Tanner Banks inherited two base runners from starter Jesús Luzardo and allowed an RBI groundout by Kyle Stowers and Sanoja's run-scoring triple.
Sánchez connected off reliever Joe Ross with a solo blast in the seventh inning, his seventh homer of the season.
Freddy Tarnok (1-0) pitched the top of the sixth and earned the win.
Luzardo (6-3) gave up four runs and six hits in five-plus innings. The former Marlins left-hander struck out four and walked four.
Run scoring singles by Johan Rojas and Kyle Schwarber in the fifth gave the Phillies a 3-2 lead.
Wagaman put Miami on the board with his two-run blast in the second.
Quantrill retired the first nine before Trea Turner homered for the second straight game, connecting for a drive over the wall in left to lead off the fourth. The right-hander gave up three runs and four hits in four-plus innings.
Tuesday's start was moved up 30 minutes to reduce the viewing conflict with Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers.
Key stat
The Marlins finished with 13 hits. They have 10 or more hits in six of their last 10 games.
Up next
LHP Ranger Suárez (5-1, 2.32) will start for the Phillies on Wednesday. The Marlins have not announced a starter.

Cam Smith hits 2 of Astros' 5 homers in 13-3 win over Athletics

Associated Press WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Cam Smith hit two of Houston's five home runs and finished with four hits as the Astros routed the Athletics 13-3 on Tuesday night to halt their four-game winning streak. Jason Alexander, claimed off waivers from the Athletics last month, pitched six shutout innings for Houston before tiring in the seventh. Mauricio Dubon, Christian Walker and Cooper Hummel also homered for the Astros. Smith and Dubón went back-to-back in the fourth inning. Smith connected for leadoff shots in the second and fourth. He drove in three runs and scored three times. The 22-year-old rookie has five major league homers — and two multihomer games. Dubón followed Smith's second home run with his second this season for a 5-0 lead against A's starter JP Sears, who walked the bases loaded in the first before giving up a two-run single to Jake Meyers. Smith finished off his first four-hit game with an RBI double in the eighth. Alexander (1-0) threw a season-high 95 pitches in his 12th career start and first since Sept. 18, 2022, with Milwaukee. He allowed three runs — two earned — and three hits. Walker hit his 10th homer, a two-run shot off Osvaldo Bido, and Isaac Paredes added a two-run single for a 9-0 lead in the fifth. Dubón singled off T.J. McFarland to begin the seventh and Hummel followed with his first big league homer since Oct. 3, 2022, with Arizona. Gio Urshela, just reinstated from the injured list, went 2 for 2 off the bench and had an RBI single to drive in the first of three runs in the seventh for the A's. Sears (5-6) gave up five runs and five hits in 3 1/3 innings. Rookie catcher Willie MacIver pitched a scoreless ninth. Key moment Houston claimed Alexander off waivers from the Athletics on May 18 and assigned him to Triple-A Sugar Land before calling him up Monday. He allowed 12 earned runs in six innings over four relief appearances for the A's. Key stat Houston has won the season series against the A's in nine of the past 10 years. Up next Astros LHP Framber Valdez (7-4, 3.10 ERA) starts Wednesday opposite Athletics RHP Luis Severino (2-6, 4.47). ___ AP MLB: recommended

Why the Panthers made sure first-time Cup winners got to celebrate first

As the team captain, Aleksander Barkov hoisted the Stanley Cup first on Tuesday after the Florida Panthers repeated as champions with a 5-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers. But after that, Barkov and the team's leaders made a statement as to who got the Cup next. First it was defenseman Nate Schmidt. Then defenseman Seth Jones. Then forward Tomas Nosek, backup goaltender Vitek Vanecek, forward A.J. Greer, forward Jesper Boqvist and forward Mackie Samoskevich. The seven players on the active roster who were in the lineup at some point during the playoffs who had not won the Stanley Cup before Tuesday. 'A bunch of us talked about at the start,' Panthers star winger Matthew Tkachuk said. 'Those guys who haven't won yet, let them feel it. Let them go first. I mean, as much as I wanted to steal it out of Barky's hands myself, like we wouldn't be here without the new guys. So, so special for them, and they deserved it.' While Tkachuk has praised the newcomers — the 'fresh blood' as he called them after Florida secured its spot back into the Stanley Cup Final — even they were happily surprised by the team's decision. 'I didn't know,' Schmidt said. 'He just looked at me and he gave me the 'Cap' death stare. You don't turn those eyes away. No I didn't know. It was awesome. I had no idea that it was going to be me. He looked me and he said, 'Hey, the guys that haven't done it before, we're going to take a back seat to you guys.' It means a lot.' Added Jones: 'It shows right? I mean, you hear stories about how special this team is and the leadership, and you see it firsthand. You see the way these guys are so selfless, so humble, and it shows on the ice.' The emotions understandably ran high for that group. They had waited their whole lives for this moment. Now, it's here. 'It's unbelievable,' Greer said. 'We were just here to help the group, and as a new guy, I wasn't trying to change much, just add a little flair and a little new energy to the group. So I'm so thankful to be a Florida Panther. Being able to lift that Stanley Cup just puts everything into perspective what all the blood, sweat and tears truly does.' As the game wound down, Nosek shared a moment with coach Paul Maurice, breaking down in tears on his coach's shoulder. The reality had hit him. There were bumps in the road during his one season in Florida. But the end result was the ultimate goal: He is now a Stanley Cup champion. 'I'm so glad I signed here,' Nosek said.
