Upgrades to the Wesfleur Athletics Track in Atlantis and the Blue Downs Athletics Track is still in progress and expected to be completed before the upcoming athletics season, the City announced.
This, as it completed a major refurbishment at Vygieskraal Athletics Stadium in Athlone, including the installation of brand-new floodlighting, roofing repairs valued at nearly R1 million, and the restoration of the shot put and long jump areas.
Plumbing and electrical systems have also been improved, while new spectator seating will enhance the visitor experience.
Further upgrades at Vygieskraal include ongoing work on the effluent line as part of scheduled maintenance.
The works are part of a wider investment intended to improve the stadium's functionality.
Vygieskraal's adjacent rugby facility has also seen upgrades, with parking and fencing projects completed during the current financial year. Additional lighting will be installed in the new financial year.
"These milestones demonstrate the City's commitment to quality public sporting infrastructure. By investing in these upgrades, we're ensuring that athletes of all ages and abilities have safe, welcoming, and well-equipped spaces to train and compete. It will ensure our sports facilities offer safe, quality spaces for communities. By continuing to invest in these refurbishments, we are creating lasting value and supporting a healthier lifestyle for residents," said Community Services and Health mayco member, Francine Higham.
The total investment in the reinstatement of athletics tracks at Wesfleur and Blue Downs is approximately R60 million.
The athletics refurbishments are part of a strategic citywide programme guided by a 2021 Athletics Study, with the goal of achieving SASREA compliance and expanding access to facilities across Cape Town.
The objective is to secure SASREA grading and ensure safer, more accessible facilities across Cape Town. Get your news on the go, click here to join the Cape Argus News WhatsApp channel.

Springboks vs Australia: Gautrain Management Agency partners with PRASA to transport fans

JOHANNESBURG - The Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) has again partnered with the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) to provide seamless train services for rugby fans attending the match between the Springboks and Australia on Saturday afternoon. Fans are encouraged to take the Gautrain to Park Station and from there, hop on to a PRASA train to the Ellis Park Stadium. Gautrain spokesperson Albi Modise said their train service will run until 16:00 and resume at 20:45, after the game. Modise said the collaboration with PRASA forms part of a broader effort to create a more integrated, accessible public transport system. 'With our parking fees at R1 a day, we urge all rugby fans to take advantage of this safe and convenient and seamless service and help ease the pressure on Joburg's roads,' he said.

Gayton McKenzie gives away FREE Springbok tickets

SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer says the organisation has met its crowd and financial targets for Saturday's Rugby Championship opener between the Springboks and Wallabies at Ellis Park, despite the 62 000-seat stadium not being sold out. As of Friday, tickets remained available across several sections of the stadium, with prices ranging from R1 050 to R4 000, according to the official Ticketmaster website. The steep pricing has raised eyebrows, especially when compared with a full DStv subscription, which offers access to the entire Test series – including the second clash in Cape Town next weekend – for roughly the same cost as the cheapest match ticket. In an effort to boost attendance, the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, led by Minister Gayton McKenzie, was distributing 2 000 free tickets as recently as Thursday morning. Speaking at Loftus Versfeld during the launch of Vodacom's new telecoms sponsorship deal with SA Rugby, Oberholzer claimed that the match had already met financial projections. 'We've hit our targets in terms of budgeting for the event,' said Oberholzer. 'When we did our forecasts, we worked on an 85% capacity. We're well over that. After the United Rugby Championship, we'll review our programme and how we drove it.' He added that any shortcomings in the campaign would be evaluated and addressed ahead of the 2026 season. 'If we've made any mistakes, we'll rectify them before the season starts next year.' Saturday's fixture continues a recent trend of under-capacity Springbok Test matches, following lukewarm ticket sales for July Tests against Italy in Pretoria and Port Elizabeth, and Georgia in Nelspruit. Despite this, SA Rugby maintains confidence in the Springboks' commercial pull. The team continues to generate strong TV viewership and remains a major drawcard following their 2023 Rugby World Cup victory. The final chance for local fans to watch the Springboks live in South Africa this year will come on 27 September, when they take on Argentina at Hollywoodbets Kings Park in Durban. Springboks fail to sell out Ellis Park

SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer claims the organisation has met its crowd target for Saturday's Rugby Championship opener between the Springboks and Wallabies at Ellis Park, despite the stadium not being sold out. The iconic 62 000-seat venue will host the highly anticipated clash, but a number of tickets remained available across multiple sections as of Friday. Prices for those tickets still available range from R1 050 to an eye-watering R4 000, according to the official Ticketmaster website. When one considers a full month subscription to DStv to watch not only this match, but the second Test between the two sides next weekend in Cape Town, costs around the same as the cheapest ticket, one is perhaps not surprised to learn there will be empty seats in the stands. Following those two matches, South Africans have only one other chance to see the Springboks live in Mzansi this year – against Argentina at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on 27 September. Perhaps no surprise then either that Gayton McKenzie's Sports, Arts and Culture department was giving away 2 000 free tickets as recently as Thursday morning. Speaking at Loftus Versfeld during the launch of Vodacom's new sponsorship deal with SA Rugby, Oberholzer said the event has already met its financial expectations. 'We've hit our targets in terms of budgeting for the event,' he said. 'When we did our forecasts, we worked on an 85% capacity. We're well over that, and after the United Rugby Championship, we'll review our programme and how we drove it.' He acknowledged that lessons would be drawn from the current series and applied ahead of the 2026 season. 'If we've made any mistakes, we'll rectify them before the season starts next year,' Oberholzer added. Saturday's match follows a trend of lower-than-expected ticket sales for the Springboks' recent July Test matches – including fixtures against Italy in Pretoria and Port Elizabeth and Georgia in Nelspruit – none of which reportedly reached capacity. Despite this, SA Rugby remains optimistic, pointing to strong broadcast numbers and sustained interest in the national team, which remains a major commercial drawcard following their 2023 Rugby World Cup triumph.
