New UAE banking rule: Banks to switch from OTPs to in-app authentication

Banks in the United Arab Emirates are phasing out one-time passwords sent via texts and email as early as this week. The shift in digital banking security will begin on Friday July 25 and is being gradually rolled out by the Central Bank of the UAE. Instead of those OTP texts and emails you get sent prior to making a big purchase, you'll soon need to authenticate transactions with greater security via your bank's mobile app. OTPs are security codes that are valid for only one login attempt or transaction and are typically used for digital payments – including online shopping or QR-code purchases when you're dining out. The switch will not happen overnight and is expected to be fully in place by all banks March 2026. A CBUAE spokesperson explained to Gulf News that customers will complete online transactions easily by selecting the Authentication via App feature. The spokesperson said: 'As per the directives issued by the UAE Central Bank, the practice of receiving OTPs via SMS or email will be phased out. 'Customers can now complete online transactions easily by selecting the 'Authentication via App' feature in their bank's smart application.' The switch from OTPs to in-app authentication should provide more security for payments in the UAE. Banks are urging customers to update their apps and start favouring in-app authentication instead. You can still book Wizz Air flights from the UAE beyond September

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is set to cancel its operations from the UAE capital from September – but you're still able to book cheap Wizz Air flights beyond that deadline. The airline offers low-cost travel from the UAE for under Dhs1,000 to several top destinations in Europe. Wizz Air has declined to comment on questions related to the airline's operations from Dubai, but does continue to offer a handful of routes online from the UAE beyond September. According to the Wizz Air website, Wizz Air Malta will continue to operate flights between Dubai and Bucharest in addition to its service from Abu Dhabi to Vienna. Similarly, you can still make bookings on Wizz Air Hungary flights from Budapest to both Dubai and Abu Dhabi beyond that September deadline. The worst part about travelling is packing, but cute luggage helps. And now, those who love all things Emirates can get a selection of cabin bags, suitcases, backpacks and handbags by the airline for their next trip. All designed and handmade by Emirates tailors, the collection is made from upcycled materials from retrofitted aircraft. Materials used from the Aircrafted by Emirates 2025 Collection have all been gathered from the interiors of the airline's old A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft. All fabrics are freshly laundered in a facility, then further deep cleaned by hand, leather-conditioned and thoroughly disinfected before being sewn into unique pieces. New lining is added to the bags, along with functional zippers and some bags even feature actual Emirates' seatbelts as straps. The limited-edition range is on sale in the Emirates Official Store, and you won't need to feel guilty about splashing the cash as most proceeds will be donated to children in need via the Emirates Airline Foundation. A previous collection sold out in 2023. (Credit: Emirates) The latest collection features three new trolley bag styles – the most popular item from the launch collection. Backpacks and handbags are available in two different styles – one of which is made using fur from the captain's seat. Prices of each handmade item range from around Dhs290 and Dhs1,250. All bags have been designed and handmade by Emirates tailors in a dedicated cabin workshop at the airline's engineering facility in Dubai. A team of 14 tailors, known as Engineering Maintenance Assistants, work on fixing and stitching any tears in the interiors of the airline's aircraft fleet. Emirates has been retrofitting the interior cabins of 219 of its A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft, the two largest commercial aircraft types today. Several of the new-look, re-upholstered aircraft have been taking to the skies from Dubai in the past year. Jetting off soon?
