Shashank Singh Relives IPL Final Last Over Drama, One Regret That Keeps Haunting Him

NDTV4 hours ago

Punjab Kings' dream of lifting their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title fell short by just 6 runs as Royal Challengers Bengaluru emerged triumphant in the final on Tuesday. It was PBKS batter Shashank Singh's late heroics that brought the team close to RCB's total of 190 runs, though the batter took the team across the finish line despite his 30-ball 61. Less than a week after the heartbreak in Ahmedabad, Shashank said that the fact that he missed Josh Hazlewood 's full toss in the final over still continues to haunt him.
Punjab needed 29 runs to win the match in the final over, with Shashank on strike. Anticipating a yorker, the batter had prepared himself but Hazlewood delivered a thigh-high full-toss, leaving him surprised. On the first two balls no run was scored.
Shashank managed to score 22 runs on from the next 4 deliveries, but it wasn't enough.
"I had done my calculation of the last two overs, Bhuvi likes to bowl yorkers so I had planned to get at least 16-17 runs from him. My calculation was that in the last over our target should be 24 runs in 6 balls. I got only 13 from Bhuvi's over though, so the final over runs needed was 30," Singh said in a chat with the Indian Express.
"Mentally, my mind was ready to get a first ball yorker from Hazelwood. So I had positioned myself but I never anticipated a full toss one, that too on my thigh pad. Now I feel, if I would have connected it, even if I got it on the handle of the bat, I would have got maximum, because the fine-leg was near. I was hoping for a wide from him but it never came. When I saw the scoreboard stating the last ball needed 12 runs, I knew it's all over," he added.
As Shashank went to the dressing room, he couldn't stop crying. Even though people praised the effort he put in the middle. The full toss hi missed on the first ball of the final over still haunts him.
"I'm a strong person but I couldn't control myself when I hit that six on the fifth ball and I saw 12 runs needed off the last ball. I realised it's all over. When I came to the dressing room, everyone came and said, why am I crying? I told them, mujhe apne aap aansoon aa raha hai," he shared.
"People appreciated my batting wherever I have gone but all are reminding me of that one full toss miss. Mujhe bahut bura laga. The ball was on my hip, square leg was up, I just had to get that bat in which I couldn't. From hotel to airport to ground to home, everyone had that one point bhaiyya woh ball mar dete bas," he says.
The batter has pledged to not just make it to the final of IPL 2026 in Bengaluru but also win the title.
"Next year we are playing the final in Bangalore for sure and we will lift the Trophy too," he said.

'Deaths at 3:50 pm, I got information at 5:45': Siddaramaiah on why RCB felicitation event continued despite stampede; says 'I went as invitee'

Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah (File photo) NEW DELHI: Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday defended the decision to go ahead with the event to felicitate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) players in front of the Karnataka Vidhana Soudha despite a stampede outside the nearby Chinnaswamy Stadium, the team's home ground. On June 4, along with the ceremony to felicitate RCB on clinching their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title, a celebration was also held at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where a large number of fans thronged, leading to stampede, in which 11 people died and 56 were injured. "Actually at 3:50 pm, deaths were reported at the hospital. I got to know only at 5:45 pm. Until then, I did not know about the stampede and deaths," news agency PTI quoted Siddaramaiah as saying. He was speaking to reporters during a visit to Mysuru. The chief minister also clarified that the ceremony at the Vidhana Soudha was by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and that he attended the programme only as an invitee. "The KSCA secretary and treasurer met and invited me. It was not organised by us. They had, and I was invited. They told me that the governor would also come. So, I had gone. Other than that, I don't know anything. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The government has nothing to do...I was not invited to the stadium event," the Congress leader said. "Nothing untoward happened at the Vidhana Soudha. The stampede incident happened at the stadium later," he added. DCP's letter surfaces Siddaramaiah's remarks come even as a letter by DCP (Vidhana Soudha security) to the secretary to the Karnataka government's Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR), surfaced . The letter warned against organising the function hastily, and highlighted that the force did not have an adequate number of personnel to provide security for a ceremony where a large number of people would gather, at short notice. This in response to the DPAR seeking the DCP's opinion on holding the felicitation event on the grand stairs of the Vidhana Soudha to honour the RCB players. "RCB has a fan following across the country. Organising the event in a hurry on the grand stairs of Vidhana Soudha will lead to lakhs of cricket fans arriving there. This will lead to problems in 'bandobast' (arrangement) since there is a shortage of officers/personnel," the DCP's letter read. The officer further said if the event is organised, passes for visitors to Vidhana Soudha should be completely stopped. Also, as there were chances of the secretariat staff getting their family members for the event, he suggested an order aimed at ensuring this doesn't happen. The officer also sought a holiday in the afternoon for secretariat staff to ensure that they too don't come there. The DCP also called for installation of more CCTV cameras in the vicinity of Vidhana Soudha - which is a vital installation - and nearby places in view of the large gatherings expected.

He Has Got A Full Array Of Shots...: Ex-English Batters Big Statement On Sai Sudharsan Ahead Of IND vs ENG Series

Former England cricketer Alec Stewart hailed young Indian batter Sai Sudharsan, saying that while with legend Virat Kohli gone from long format, the shoes will be big to fill up, his quick learning ability and array of shots will serve him well for India in Test cricket. Sudharsan, who has already made three ODI appearances with 127 runs and two fifties and a T20I appearance for India, will be looking forward to making his Test debut for India during the five-Test England tour starting from June 20, which will kickstart not only India's ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle, but also a new era under captaincy of Shubman Gill following retirements of legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Sudharsan has played 29 first-class games so far, with 1,957 runs in 49 innings at an average of 39.93 with seven centuries and five fifties. His best individual score is 213. While these numbers are not the best on domestic scene, his talent and potential was on full display during the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL), where he walked away with the Orange Cap for most runs and 'Emerging Player of the Season' award, scoring a massive 759 runs in 15 matches at an average of 54.21, strike rate of above 156, a century and six fifties. His ability to shift gears and bat according to situation was evident in Gujarat Titans' run till the eliminator against Mumbai Indians (MI), where he played a fighting knock during a tightly-contested match. However, when Surrey first picked Sudharsan in 2023, he had played less than 10 first-class games and was yet to make his international debut. However, he made up for his lack of experience with detailed and brilliant preparation. Stewart, who was once England's most capped Test player with 8.463 runs and 15 centuries in 133 Tests, was left impressed with Sai's commitment to the game. Before his first game for Surrey against Northamptonshire back in September 2023, Sudharsan played for the team's second XI at Guildford, to acquaint himself with English conditions and Dukes ball better. Stewart recalled that Sudharsan came in as an unknown, with GT Director of Cricket and ex-England player Vikram Solanki playing a big role in recommending him. "Sai came as an unknown, and his experience of the English game was very limited. Vikram Solanki was massive in recommending him to me, and I have so much respect for Vikram. From his first training session, you could see that he was a special talent, and he has not looked back. He loves to bat - whether in the nets or the middle - and just fitted into our set-up perfectly," said Stewart as quoted by ESPNCricinfo. Stewart also feels that Sudharsan's soft hands and range os strokes will help him thrive in English conditions, noting that his ability to play the ball late is extremely important in English conditions. "If you go too hard and get too far out in front of yourself, when the ball seams, you are not in control, then your bat can get outside of your eyeline, whereas he plays it under his eyeline, plays it under his eyes, and plays it late. And even if he does nick it a little bit, like Kane Williamson, for example - you can nick it, but it still falls short of slip and that again is a real attribute of Sai's," he said. "The pitches are quicker here, certainly at The Oval, and to succeed, you have to be able to play off the back foot. You have got to be selective to pull, hook, cut or let go. He gets out of the line of the short ball well but can also play the uppercut over the slips. He has got a full array of shots, and he gets them in the right order," he added. Dukes ball, which swings way more than Kookaburra balls used in Australia and SG balls used in India, has been put to good use by Sudharsan, who took some of them back home after his county stint, as revealed by Sudharsan. "I did not charge him for them and just let him have them. But, no... he had that forward-thinking mindset and trained with those balls, so that when he comes back to us, or hopefully is picked for India on tour, he will have had nice practice against the Dukes cricket ball as well," said the former England wicketkeeper-batter. "Some of those will probably be worn out by now because I gave them to him last year, but he is a quick learner and he practises with a purpose. Yes, he likes volume, but he also likes to improve," he added. Watching videos of Virat Kohli shown to him by his mother, Sudharsan is a front-runner to be a part of India's top-order after the icon's retirement from whites. Stewart advised Sudharsan that he should not think about being the 'next Virat' since he is irreplacable, but think of being the "best version of Sai Sudharsan". "Then India has got yet another high-quality cricketer," he concluded. The five-test tour of England, starting June 20 at Leeds and lasting until August 2025, is set to be a heavy one for fans and players alike. With senior stars Rohit and Virat having retired from the longest format of the game, the onus lies on the Shubman Gill-led new-look Indian side to prove themselves away from home in tough English conditions and ensure that Indian cricket is safe. The series will be held from June to August 2025, with matches scheduled at Headingley in Leeds, Edgbaston in Birmingham, Lord's and The Oval in London, and Old Trafford in Manchester. India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.

Karnataka CM defends holding RCB felicitation at Vidhana Soudha despite police warning

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday defended the decision to go ahead with the RCB victory celebration in front of Vidhana Soudha, saying no untoward incident happened there. The CM's reaction came to the DCP (Vidhana Soudha security) letter written before the event warning against holding felicitations at Vidhana Soudha "hastily", surfaced now. The CM, however, clarified that the event at Vidhana Soudha was organised by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and that he attended the programme as he was invited. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The price of dental implants may surprise you Dental Implants | Search Ads Search Now Undo On June 4, along with a felicitation to the RCB on IPL victory at Vidhana Soudha, a celebration was also organised at the Chinnaswamy cricket stadium, where a large number of people thronged, leading to stampede, in which eleven people died and 56 were injured. A letter by DCP (Vidhana Soudha security) on June 4 to Secretary to the government, Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR), warning against organising the event hastily, and also highlighting that they did not have enough personnel to organise security for such an event, where a large number of people would gather, at short notice, has surfaced. Live Events The letter was in response to DPAR seeking his opinion on holding the felicitation event on the grand stairs of the Vidhana Soudha to honour the RCB players. "The RCB cricket team has a fan following across the country. Organising the event in a hurry on the grand stairs of Vidhana Soudha will lead to lakhs of cricket fans arriving at Vidhana Soudha. This will lead to problems in bandobast since there is a shortage of officers/personnel in Vidhana Soudha security division," the DCP's letter said. As the RCB fan following is huge, police personnel from outside the city will be required for bandobast and it will require time, he further said, both law and order and the traffic police will have to coordinate for a mega event like this and there is not enough time. The officer said if the event is organised, the issual of online or offline passes for visitors to Vidhana Soudha should be completely stopped. Also, as there are chances of the secretariat staff getting their family members for the event, an order should be issued aimed at ensuring that this doesn't happen. It also sought a holiday in the afternoon for secretariat staff to ensure that they too don't come there. The letter also calls for installation of more CCTV cameras in the vicinity of Vidhana Soudha, which is a vital installation and nearby places in view of the large gatherings expected; and highlights the need for an anti-drone system. However, at the end, the DCP's letter says that the Vidhana Soudha comes under the ambit of a heritage building and a vital installation. Keeping security in view, time is required to organise the event without causing any harm to the building and by following the rules Despite this, the government's decision will be abided by. Responding to a question about the letter, Siddaramaiah, speaking to reporters in Mysuru, said, "...at the end, what does the letter say? The police will act according to what the government decides. It did not come to me at all. DAPR secretary has given the permission. Of course I was told. I said give permission to the event in front of Vidhana Soudha." Questioning whether any incident happened during the event in front of Vidhana Soudha in which the Governor too had participated, he said nothing happened there. The stampede incident happened at the stadium later. Asked whether DPAR secretary Sathyavathi will be suspended like five police officers, including the then Commissioner of Police B Dayananda, the CM asked, "What has Sathyavathi done? What happened at Vidhana Soudha?" Noting that the DPAR Secretary asked him for permission in the regular course about holding the event in front of Vidhana Soudha and the Chief Secretary said it can be and the police have agreed, Siddaramaiah said, "The KSCA Secretary and Treasurer met me and invited me. It is not organised by us. They had organised and I was invited. They told me that the Governor would also come. So, I had gone. Other than that, I don't know anything. The government has nothing to do...I was not invited to the stadium event." The DCP in his letter has also mentioned the need to obtain a no-objection certificate from the PWD department regarding the stage, fitness certificate from an engineer regarding electric equipment used, also about anti-sabotage check. Asked whether the stampede incident had brought embarrassment to the government, Siddaramaiah said when the government has done nothing wrong, why embarrassment? Action has been taken against those who are at fault prima facie. "Was resignation given after the Kumbh Mela stampede in which 50-60 people were killed?" Replying to criticism about him going ahead with the felicitation event, in spite of deaths due to stampede, the CM said, "Actually at 3:50 pm death was reported at the hospital. I got to know only at 5:45 pm. Until then, I did not know about the stampede and deaths." Responding to a question on the BJP's protest demanding his resignation and legal action against him, Siddaramaiah said, "What is the Chief Minister's fault? The BJP is doing it politically. They are making false allegations against me. Where is the government wrong?" On the demand to shift the cricket stadium outside Bengaluru, the CM said, "We will consider has to be identified."
