Aaron Judge hit the first home run of his MLB career the day after Alex Rodriguez retired. Now the two are tied on the Yankees all-time home run list. Judge hit his 351st career homer in a 4-2 win over the Braves on Sunday, moving into a tie with A-Rod for sixth place in Yankees history.
'Just an incredible honor, especially you know, growing up watching A-Rod for so many years and watching what he did in pinstripes,' Judge said. 'He's a legend. One of the best ever players.'
Judge trails Yankee greats Babe Ruth (659), Mickey Mantle (536), Lou Gehrig (493), Joe DiMaggio (361), and Yogi Berra (358) in career homers for New York. Judge's homer on Sunday was his 36th of the season. He is two behind MLB leader Cal Raleigh of the Mariners, who won the Home Run Derby in Atlanta on Monday.
Judge hit a solo shot in the first inning that traveled 409 feet to right field off Grant Holmes, giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead. It was his eighth home run in his last 17 games. The Yankees travel to Toronto to face the AL East-leading Blue Jays in a three-game series starting Monday.

Pete Alonso hits 3-run homer to power mets to sweep of angels

Pete Alonso hit a three-run homer to power the New York Mets to a 6-3 win and series sweep of the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. Alonso, mired in a 2-for-34 slump dating back to July 10, homered two batters after Francisco Lindor broke a career-long 0-for-31 drought with an RBI single. Brandon Nimmo hit his 14th career leadoff homer, and Lindor added another RBI single in the fourth for the Mets, who swept a series for the fifth time this season. Sean Manaea (1-1), making his third appearance and second start after battling oblique and elbow injuries, allowed one run and struck out five over five innings. Edwin Díaz got the final four outs for his 21st save. Mike Trout homered in the third—the 396th home run and 999th RBI of his career—for the Angels, who were swept for the seventh time. Luis Rengifo (forceout) and Chris Taylor (double) collected RBIs in the seventh. Left-hander Jake Eder (0-1), the last of three Angels pitchers on a bullpen day, gave up five runs in a career-high six innings. Key moment: Alonso's first homer since July 8 was the 248th of his career, pulling him within four of Darryl Strawberry for the all-time franchise lead. Key stat: Trout is aiming to become the second active player with 400 homers and the ninth with 1000 RBIs. Up next: The Mets travel west for a six-game road trip starting Friday when RHP Clay Holmes (8-5 3.48 ERA) opens a three-game series against RHP Logan Webb (9-7 3.08 ERA) and the San Francisco Giants. Angels LHP Yusei Kikuchi (4-6 3.13 ERA) starts Thursday when the Angels return home for a four-game series against the Seattle Mariners and RHP Logan Evans (3-3 3.81 ERA).

Unswept Reds: Lodolo Goes Distance in Shutout Win at Nats as Cincinnati Again Avoids Series Sweep

Nick Lodolo went the distance and kept the Cincinnati Reds as the only team in the majors that hasn't been swept this season. Lodolo threw a four-hitter for his first career shutout, and the Reds snapped a three-game losing streak, including the first two games of their series at Washington, with a 5-0 win in the finale against the Nationals on Wednesday. 'We needed a win… I don't care how,' Reds manager Terry Francona said. 'Some games feel like they're bigger than others. They're not, but they feel like it. But I'm glad we won today, that's what we came for.' The Reds (53-50), who have an off day Thursday, have played 33 series this season without being swept to set a franchise record. It was the fifth time this year they won the finale after losing the first two in a three-game series. Cincinnati took two out of three at the New York Mets coming out of the All-Star break to match the 32 series in a row by the 1970 Reds, who went on to win the first of five National League pennants in a seven-season span, capped by back-to-back World Series titles in 1975 and 76. That 1970 team was swept in two games at the Chicago Cubs in its 33rd series of the season. Lodolo (8-6) struck out eight without a walk, throwing 76 of his career-high 105 pitches for strikes. The Reds have won seven of his nine starts since the beginning of June. 'Lodolo showed up big for us to be able to come out here and, you know, obviously not get swept, but just kind of get us back on track to feeling like what we feel like we can do as a ball club,' right fielder Jake Fraley said. 'He's a phenomenal ball player. He's been pitching his butt off all year. And this is just another start that he's been doing all year.' It was the first time in Lodolo's 68 career starts that the 27-year-old left-hander pitched into the ninth inning and the first time he went at least seven innings in back-to-back starts. It was his second career complete game, but the other was a rain-shortened 4-2 win in six innings over Minnesota on June 18. 'I got the rainout CG, but now I got a real one,' Lodolo said. 'It's pretty cool. I feel like I had everything kind of working for the most part. Good defense, I got some early outs that helped me stay in the game that long.' Cincinnati took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Elly Del La Cruz had a leadoff walk, stole second base, and scored on Fraley's single. It stayed that way until the Reds added two runs in the eighth before center fielder Jacob Young's inning-ending leaping catch at the wall to take a homer away from Will Benson. 'I know the score ended up 5-0. That wasn't a 5-0 game, that was 1-0. (Lodolo) had to pitch through that for the majority of the game,' Francona said. 'I thought as the game went, he got stronger, which is a really good sign. You know, his breaking ball has been a weapon. And as he holds his velocity the entire game, he threw strikes. He just really pitched a great game.'

Joe Burrow sees a bright future for Bengals offense despite rough 1st day of training camp

Quarterback Joe Burrow said that the Cincinnati Bengals offense played poorly on the first day of training camp Wednesday. But with a healthy unit that's fully participating in practices this season, Burrow is more optimistic than he has ever been about the offense hitting the ground running during the regular season. 'When we have guys back like we do, you know it should be seamless,' Burrow said. 'Year in and year out, game in and game out. It wasn't today. So we'll watch the tape and get better from that, but you know we have the guys in the room that have done it before and that feels good.' Burrow led the NFL with 4,918 passing yards and 43 touchdowns last season, but he said that statistically his focus this year is on completion rate even after having a career-best 70.6 percent accuracy in 2024, which was fourth in the league. With all of the offense's top players from last season returning, Burrow has a strong supporting cast around him. As the unit practices this summer, coach Zac Taylor said that the group is balancing building on its strengths with staying fresh and adding new elements. 'You want to continue to do the things we think were excellent at and make people prove they can stop it,' Taylor said. 'But at the same time, you have to evolve what you're doing. We feel people are going to spend a lot of time studying us in the offseason to make sure they can hit the ground running if they play us early in the season.' Unlike previous seasons, Burrow will get a lot of time and reps in the training camp and in the preseason to go through that process. In 2020, training camp was shortened because of the pandemic. In 2021, Burrow was limited during the summer as he recovered from a torn ACL. In 2022, Burrow had an emergency appendectomy during training camp. In 2023, he strained his calf. At this point last year, he was limited during several practices as he worked back from a wrist injury. 'Right now there is none of that,' Taylor said. 'He will participate every day like he normally would, fully healthy. Then anticipate playing him more in games than we ever had.' Burrow has said for years that he wants to play more in the preseason, and he'll get that opportunity this season. That's one of several changes in place to help the Bengals have a stronger start to the season. The Bengals have dropped their first two games in each of the past three seasons. Cincinnati is practicing in the morning during training camp, implementing more physical practices and also playing its starters more in the preseason. 'I'm excited for the chance to get better,' Burrow said. 'Those are valuable reps that we haven't had in the past for good reason. I think we're making the right decision this year, and I think that's gonna benefit us in the long run.'
