On Sunday, Lakhbir Singh had pasted a poster reading "village for sale" following complaints of rampant drug abuse in the village, especially after ex-serviceman Ranbir Singh was mercilessly beaten by two individuals, including Kuldeep Singh Kala, who faces two cases under the NDPS Act and two under the Excise Act.
Amneet Kondal, senior superintendent of police, Bathinda, said the Kotfatta SHO had been transferred to the police lines and a departmental enquiry was initiated against him.
The action was taken against Manish Kumar following the complaints made by Bhai Bakhtaur village resident Lakhbir Singh, said the SSP.
Ex-serviceman Ranbir Singh, who opposed drug abuse and encouraged youths to engage in sports, was brutally beaten by Bhai Bakhtaur residents Kuldeep Singh Kala, Gurpreet Singh, and another person late Saturday.
In response, village resident Lakhbir Singh uploaded a video on social media, expressing concern that after the attack on Ranbir Singh, many in the village, including women, did not feel safe.
In anger, he also put up the "village on sale" poster.
Although Kala and Gurpreet were arrested, Lakhbir uploaded another video Monday night, claiming that SHO Manish Kumar was angry about the video and threatened him with dire consequences, in addition to mentioning that a dope test should be conducted on him.
Meanwhile, various political leaders visited Ranbir Singh in hospital and appreciated his stand against drug abuse and his challenge to the state govt.
Congress MLA Pargat Singh visited Bhai Bakhtaur village to show solidarity with the family of the ex-serviceman and assured them of every possible support in their fight for justice.

Shashi Tharoor flags false equivalence with Pakistan on US mediation role – ‘this is about India versus terrorism'

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has said having United States as a mediator between India and Pakistan would imply an equivalence which doesn't exist. "Mediation is not a term that we are particularly willing to entertain. You're implying an equivalence which simply doesn't exist, Tharoor said speaking at an event in Washington DC when asked if it is helpful to have the United States available as a mediator. Tharoor is part of all-party delegation traveling abroad as part of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government's diplomatic outreach to highlight India's stand on terrorism following'Operation Sindoor'. 'There is no equivalence between terrorists and their victims. There is no equivalence between a country that provides a safe haven to terrorism and a country that's a flourishing multi-party democracy that's trying to get on with its business,' the Congress MP said. Tharoor said that Modi government also received calls at high levels from the US government and India appreciated their concern and their interest. At the same time, he said, they must have been making similar calls at the highest levels to the Pakistan side. "Because that's the side that needed persuading to stop this process, that may well have been where their messages really had the greatest effect. But that's guesswork on my part. I don't know what they said to the Pakistanis," he said. The Congress leader reiterated that India hit terror bases in Pakistan during Operation Tharoor while Pakistan hit civilains in retailiation since there are no terror bases in India. "There are no terror bases in India to hit. There are no terrorist organisations in India listed in the UN or the State Department anywhere else. So, what do you hit? You hit civilians, innocent people. That is the asymmetry of this particular conflict. We have tried not just to be precise and calibrated in our response, but we have tried systematically to signal we are not interested in war with Pakistan. We're not interested in attacking Pakistani civilians, ordinary people. This is about India versus terrorism," he said. As many as 26 people were killed and several others injured in the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on 22 April. Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. There is no equivalence between terrorists and their victims. Key Takeaways Mediation by the US is viewed as inappropriate due to the lack of equivalence between India and Pakistan. Tharoor highlights the asymmetry in the conflict, stressing that India targets terror bases while Pakistan retaliates against civilians. The focus should remain on countering terrorism rather than establishing diplomatic parity.

Bihar sanctions compensation, pension for family of Dalit minor rape victim

The Bihar government on Thursday (June 5, 2025) sanctioned compensation of ₹8.25 lakh under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, to the family members of the 11-year-old Dalit girl who was raped and brutally assaulted with a knife, and later succumbed to her injuries at the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on June 1. The State also announced a monthly pension of ₹7,700 for the victim's family, in addition to the allotment of a house under the Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana. According to officials, the girl, who was transferred from Muzaffarpur, had to wait in an ambulance for nearly five hours before being admitted to PMCH, as a bed was not allotted promptly. 'There is a provision under the SC/ST Atrocities Act that if any murder of an SC/ST person takes place, then a compensation of ₹8.25 lakh is given. Based on the FIR and post-mortem report, we have given the first instalment of ₹4,12,500 to the mother of the girl,' Mr. Sen said. The opposition, including the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, Left parties, and the Vikasheel Insaan Party (VIP), has been consistently attacking the State government over the incident. On Tuesday (June 3, 2025), the RJD's women's wing held a protest march against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Health Minister Mangal Pandey in Patna, while Congress leaders staged a demonstration outside Mr. Pandey's official residence. If she had received timely treatment, her life could have been saved. But the 'double-engine' government was negligent not only in providing security but in saving her life.' Mr. Sen also announced additional welfare measures. 'Apart from the pension, a house under Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana has been sanctioned for the family. I have instructed the Block Development Officer to ensure the house is built. In 2011-12, the family received a house under the Indira Awas Yojana but could not construct it. In this special case, we have taken the decision to provide ₹1.20 lakh for house construction and ₹12,000 for a toilet,' he said. He added that the second instalment of ₹4,12,500 would be disbursed once the chargesheet is filed by the police. According to the police, the minor was raped and found with around 20 knife wounds on and around her neck in a pit at a brick kiln in Muzaffarpur on May 26. The accused was arrested the same evening. Union Minister and ruling party leader Chirag Paswan wrote to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday, calling the incident 'a failure of the state's law and order and public health infrastructure', and demanded strict action against those responsible. Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati also criticised the State government, describing the incident as evidence of Bihar's poor law and health systems. Amid mounting outrage, the State Health Department, on June 3, took disciplinary action against two senior medical officials of PMCH and Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), Muzaffarpur, for dereliction of duty.
