Coca-Cola beats quarterly revenue estimates on steady soda demand

CNA6 days ago
Coca-Cola beat Wall Street estimates for second-quarter revenue on Tuesday, as the beverages giant benefited from resilient demand for its sodas.
The company's shares were up about 1 per cent in premarket trading. They have risen 12.5 per cent so far this year.
Coca-Cola's well-known brands and its global presence have thus far cushioned the beverage giant from a broader weakening in demand for sodas in the United States.
The company has been able to raise prices in inflationary markets such as Latin America and the U.S., while volume growth has remained steady.
Demand for its protein milkshakes brands in the United States has also been strong as consumers look for healthier beverage and snacking options.
The company's comparable revenue rose 2.5 per cent to $12.62 billion, compared with analysts' expectations of a 1.86 per cent growth to $12.54 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Malaysia's economy projected to grow 4% to 4.8% this year, central bank says

KUALA LUMPUR :Malaysia's economy is projected to expand by 4 per cent to 4.8 per cent in 2025, down from a previous forecast of 4.5 per cent to 5.5 per cent, its central bank said on Monday, warning that trade and tariff uncertainties could affect global growth. Headline inflation is expected to average between 1.5 per cent and 2.3 per cent this year, Bank Negara Malaysia said in a statement. The central bank said the global economic growth outlook was affected by shifting trade policies and uncertainties surrounding tariffs. It said Malaysia's "updated growth projections account for various tariff scenarios, ranging from a continued elevation of tariffs to more favourable trade negotiation outcomes." Although Malaysia's economy remains on a "strong footing", the central bank said its growth projection remains subject to uncertainties surrounding the global economy. Malaysia is facing a 25 per cent tariff on its exports to the United States unless it can reach a deal with Washington by August 1. Malaysia's trade minister said several sticking points remained in the talks with the United States, particularly on non-trade barriers, but discussions were progressing well and were on track to meet the August deadline.

Trump Reveals Striking 'Very Powerful Deal' With EU, With Europeans Agreeing to Buy $750 Billion Worth of US Energy and Pay 15% Tariffs

President Trump announced a sweeping new preliminary trade deal with the European Union, under which the 27-nation bloc has committed to buying $750 billion worth of American energy and boosting its investment in the U.S. by an additional $600 billion beyond existing levels. The United States will implement a 15% tariff on the majority of goods imported from the European Union. Trump announced the agreement shortly after holding talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at his Turnberry resort. "I think it's the biggest deal ever made," Trump said. The deal will bring much relief to investors who had been reeling under fears of a global trade war. Trump Does It Gain Trump and EC president Ursula von der Leyen X "I think we both wanted to make a deal," the president added. "It's going to bring us closer together. I think this deal will bring us very close together." As part of the deal, Europe also agreed to "purchase a vast amount of military equipment" from the US, though Trump noted, "We don't know what that number is" yet. Trump and von der Leyen shook hands and praised one another for reaching the deal, but remained vague about what the U.S. had given up in return. "The starting point was an imbalance — a surplus on our side and a deficit on the US side," the EU boss said when asked about the concessions Trump made. "And we wanted to rebalance the trade relation, and we wanted to do it in a way that trade goes on between the two of us across the Atlantic." Trump had warned that he would impose a 30 percent tariff on EU nations if the influential trading bloc didn't come to an agreement with the United States. Von der Leyen flew to Scotland to meet with Trump at his resort in an effort to finalize the deal. Just an hour before the announcement, both leaders estimated there was only a 50 percent chance of striking an agreement. Trump's Planned Move Trump and EC President Ursula von der Leyen X Prior to unveiling the deal, Trump indicated that "pharmaceuticals won't be part" in the deal, explaining that his administration intends to take a more aggressive approach to bring drug manufacturing back to the U.S. Von der Leyen praised Trump, calling him a strong negotiator and skilled dealmaker. "And fair," Trump interjected. Trump, during his informal talk with reporters on Sunday, made it clear that he has no plans to postpone the August 1 deadline for his specially designed "Liberation Day" tariffs to begin—despite having pushed it back twice before, To date, Trump has secured initial tariff agreements with the UK, Vietnam, Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. He also hinted that his team had recently finalized another deal but did not reveal which nation was involved. Trump currently has a variety of tariffs in place now, including a 25 percent duty on automobiles, aluminum, and steel, as well as a 25 percent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico that don't meet the requirements of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. He has also recently suggested the possibility of increasing those tariffs on both neighboring countries. In addition, Trump has agreed to a temporary tariff pause with China and has given Beijing until August 12 to finalize a broader trade agreement. Earlier this month, he issued an ultimatum to Moscow, demanding that Russia reach a peace agreement with Ukraine within 50 days or face 100% secondary tariffs on its energy exports—penalties that would apply to countries purchasing energy from Russia.

Trump in Scotland as EU-US trade deal nears, von der Leyen to meet president on Sunday

BRUSSELS: The European Union and the United States could finalise a framework trade deal this weekend, EU officials and diplomats said on Friday (Jul 25), as US President Donald Trump arrived in Scotland for bilateral talks and a visit to his golf properties. The deal would likely include a 15 per cent baseline tariff on all EU goods entering the United States and probably a 50 per cent tariff on European steel and aluminium, the officials and diplomats said. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed she would meet Trump on Sunday in Scotland, saying on social media that the pair would discuss 'transatlantic trade relations, and how we can keep them strong' following a 'good call' with the US president. US President Donald Trump on Friday said there was a 50-50 chance or perhaps less that the United States would reach a trade agreement with the European Union, adding that Brussels wanted to "make a deal very badly". 'We are close to an agreement and it is possible we will reach it during the weekend,' one senior EU official said. One of the sources said a weekend deal seemed likely as the "agreement is basically in the hands of Trump now." "We are close to an agreement and it is possible we will reach it during the weekend," one senior EU official said. A source familiar with the negotiations said there was a "good chance" European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen would meet Trump in Scotland over the weekend. The visit comes as Trump faces mounting pressure at home over his administration's handling of documents related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, who died in prison in 2019. White House officials reportedly hope the controversy fades while Trump is abroad. European luxury and auto shares, two of the sectors most exposed to US tariffs, rose on Friday, with LVMH and Volkswagen closing up around 4 per cent and 3 per cent respectively. Combining goods, services and investment, the EU and the United States are each other's largest trading partners by far. The American Chamber of Commerce to the EU warned in March that any conflict jeopardised US$9.5 trillion of business in the world's most important commercial relationship. The EU is facing US tariffs on more than 70 per cent of its exports - 50 per cent on steel and aluminium, 25 per cent on cars and car parts and a 10 per cent levy on most other EU goods, which US President Donald Trump has said he would hike to 30 per cent on Aug 1, a level EU officials said would wipe out whole chunks of transatlantic commerce. Further tariffs on copper and pharmaceuticals are looming. The EU has prepared countermeasures that could enter into force on Aug 7 in the event that talks collapse. French car parts supplier OpMobility said it was concerned that the bloc as a whole seemed unable to negotiate better terms than individual countries. 'In the short term, we can probably say that we've avoided the worst, but that does not mean that it's a good deal,' CEO Laurent Favre said on Thursday. 'At the end of the day it shows that the relationship is unbalanced.'
