FBM KLCI rises on positive earnings expectations
The Malaysian index was up 3.71 points to 1,591.92, inching closer to the crucial 1,600 level as investors opted for optimism ahead of blue-chip earnings slated for release this week and next.
TA Securities had anticipated the market to stay in consolidation mode with a downward bias, as sentiment is weighed down by the absence of domestic catalysts while investors await Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell's remarks at a key economic conference later this week.
"Immediate support stays at the 50%FR (1,527) with stronger supports seen at the 38.2%FR (1,490) and the 23.6%FR (1,444). Immediate resistance remains at 1,610, the 76.4%FR, with next upside hurdle at the December 2024 high of 1,644, followed by stronger resistance at 1,684," said the research firm in its market commentary.
Among the key gainers on the market, Gamuda rose eight sen to RM5.70 after announcing its tie-up with SD Guthrie to develop solar farms.
PETRONAS Chemicals maintained its rally for a fourth day, rising 23 sen to RM4.41 while PETRONAS Gas gained 16 sen to RM18.90.
Sunway Construction jumped seven sen to RM5.89.

[UPDATED] Viral flag blunder: Dental clinic faces 30-day closure
PONTIAN: A private dental clinic in Pontian Trade Centre has been ordered to close for 30 days after it was discovered flying the Malaysian flag upside down on Wednesday afternoon, an incident that quickly went viral on social media. Pontian Municipal Council president Abd Azim Shamsuddin said a closure notice was served to the owner at 8.20am today. He said that inspections revealed the premises had breached the Pontian District Council 2019 Business and Trade Licensing By-Laws concerning flag display. "All licensed premises under the by-laws are required to display the Jalur Gemilang or the Johor state flag correctly for a designated period, including during Independence Month. "The closure was enforced under By-Law 49(2), which grants the President the authority to shut down any premises found to be in breach of licensing conditions," he said. Abd Azim said that the owner could submit a written appeal during the closure period, but any further decision would be at the discretion of the Pontian Municipal Council.

Tealive rolls out durian drink series for Merdeka season
KUALA LUMPUR: Southeast Asia's lifestyle tea brand Tealive has launched a special durian drink series for the National Day–Malaysia Day season, targeting sales of 500,000 cups during the campaign. Now available at outlets nationwide, the durian limited-time offer (LTO) line-up showcases three creations made with premium D24 durians: Snowy Bang Bang Durian Milk Tea, Bang Bang Durian Milk Kaw Kaw, and Jasmine durian light milk tea. Tealive said the LTO series has been recognised as part of the Hari Kebangsaan and Hari Malaysia 2025 celebrations, held under the theme 'Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni'. Loob Holding Sdn Bhd founder and chief executive officer Bryan Loo said the durian series was created to pay tribute to a Malaysian icon while catering to contemporary tastes, adding that durian is a unifying national symbol, widely recognised and celebrated both locally and internationally. "This Merdeka season, we're capturing that pride in drinks that are bold, distinctive, and unmistakably Malaysian," he said. Tealive said the durians are provided by Malaysia's top durian exporter, sourced from orchards in Bentong, Raub, Tangkak, and Gua Musang. The brand also introduced limited-edition 3-in-1 sachets, including Durian Milk Tea and Durian Coffee, available exclusively for the festival and through online platforms.

22 million MyKad holders can now check eligibility for Sara Appreciation Aid, says Finance Ministry
PUTRAJAYA: A total of 22 million Malaysian MyKad holders can now check their eligibility for the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) Appreciation Aid via the official Sara portal at starting from Thursday (Aug 21), the Finance Ministry announced. In a statement, the ministry explained that all Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above, or those born in 2007 or earlier, are eligible for this financial assistance, including existing Sara recipients. "No registration or application is required, as eligibility for the Sara Appreciation Aid is determined automatically based on data from the National Registration Department (NRD)," the statement clarified. The Finance Ministry advised the public to be cautious of scams, noting that the RM100 aid will be disbursed directly to recipients' MyKad, eliminating the need for intermediaries or third-party applications. The RM100 credit will be distributed starting Aug 31, in conjunction with National Day, and can be used until Dec 31 this year. To ensure equitable use of the nation's wealth, the minstry stated that any unspent balance at the end of the year will be redirected to vulnerable groups through upcoming Madani government programmes. ALSO READ: All adult Malaysians to receive RM100 under Sara programme for Merdeka Day, says PM "Recipients can also choose to use the aid for charitable purposes, such as purchasing essential goods to donate to NGOs, houses of worship, or those in need," the statement added. The Finance Ministry noted that households stand to benefit more collectively. For example, a family comprising two parents and two adult children could receive up to RM400 in total. The Sara aid can be spent at more than 7,300 registered retail outlets nationwide, with the number set to grow. Beneficiaries can purchase over 100,000 essential items across 14 categories, including staple foods like rice and eggs, hygiene products, medicines, school supplies, and personal care items. Further information, including a list of participating stores by city and purchasing guidelines, is available on the official Sara portal. A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section is also provided for public reference. With the implementation of the Sara Appreciation Aid, total allocations under the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) and SARA programmes have increased from RM13bil to RM15bil for 2025, which is 50% more than the RM10bil allocated in 2024. – Bernama
