Kota Kinabalu: A company director was fined a total of RM6,000 by the Magistrate's Court here on two counts related to unlabelled and unapproved electrical cables, six years ago.Chaw Chen Sin, 49, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to both charges on Tuesday.
Advertisement Chaw, on the first count, was fined RM2,500 or six months in jail for keeping 42 rolls of insulated PVC cables of various brands and models that were not properly labelled, with the intention to sell them. The offence was committed on Oct 31, 2019, at 4.30pm, at Ideal Supply (KK) Sdn Bhd, Jalan Tuaran, Inanam. The charge was framed under Regulation 109A(2)(b) of the Electricity Regulations 1994, punishable under Regulation 122 of the same regulations, which carries a maximum fine of RM5,000 or up to one year in jail, or both. On the second count, Chaw was fined RM3,500 or six months in jail for displaying 139 units of similar PVC cables, classified as low-voltage equipment commonly sold directly to the public, without a Certificate of Approval from the Energy Commission, at the same place and time. The charge falls under Regulation 97(1)(b) of the Electricity Regulations 1994, also punishable under Regulation 122, which provides for a maximum penalty of RM5,000, a year's jail term, or both. The facts of the case presented by the prosecution, stated that the authorities found 182 rolls of various domestic electrical cables displayed for sale during an inspection of the premises. A preliminary analysis showed that none of the cables had the required Certificate of Approval from the Energy Commission and were not labelled in accordance with Regulation 98 of the same regulations. All the cables were subsequently seized. Under Regulation 97(1)(b), subject to several other provisions, no person may manufacture, import, display, sell, or advertise low-voltage electrical equipment commonly sold to the public without prior approval from the Energy Commission. Meanwhile, Regulation 98 allows the Commission to require approved electrical equipment to be labelled in a prescribed manner. SIPITANG: The Education Ministry, Sabah Education Department and the school involved have been urged to conduct an internal investigation into compliance with work SOPs, discipline and safety procedures at both the school and its hostel following the tragic death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir. Qazanah Sabah Berhad Chairman and Sindumin Assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob said the probe was vital to determine the level of SOP adherence and to safeguard the trust of parents in the education system. 'This is not a matter of minor negligence, but one that involves a life and the confidence of parents in our education system,' he said, stressing that the tragedy must prompt a thorough review of safety measures in schools and hostels. He also called on the police to carry out a full and professional investigation into the incident to establish whether any criminal element was involved. Dr Yusof, who was speaking during a gathering attended by thousands at the Esplanade in Sipitang recently, said the case had sparked public anger and speculation. Without making any accusations, including claims circulating on social media about the alleged involvement of a VVIP's child, he said the absence of any official statement or investigation outcome after two weeks had fuelled public concern. Practically impossible to place a human in washing machine

Kota Kinabalu: A random survey of washing machine retailers here has shed light on the physical limitations of household appliances, amid ongoing speculation surrounding the death of Zara Qairina. The survey, conducted across various shops selling washing machines in the city, found that available units typically range in capacity from 25kg to 120kg. However, business operators were unanimous in their assessment that placing an adult human inside a washing machine would be practically impossible with standard household models. 'There is no way an adult human could fit into a washing machine unless we are talking about industrial-type machines,' said one retailer. The operators said even if such an act were attempted, putting a human inside a washing machine in motion would be nearly impossible due to fundamental design limitations. According to the retailers surveyed, washing machines are specifically engineered to handle loads of clothes, which are typically distributed evenly and are compressible. In contrast, a human body is rigid and proportionally much larger and heavier, creating abnormal load distribution and excessive mechanical stress on both the drum and motor systems. 'The washing machine structure simply is not engineered for such loads,' said another business operator. 'It would increase the risk of mechanical failure or unstable operation significantly,' she said. These findings come as lawyers representing the family of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir have issued public appeals for credible information to assist police investigations, while urging against online speculation. For the record, lawyers Hamid Ismail and Shahlan Jufri had pointed out that rumours circulating on social media hold no investigative value unless shared directly with law enforcement authorities. The legal team was responding to viral claims on social media platforms, including a TikTok livestream that alleged Zara had been placed in a washing machine before being discovered near a drain.
