Surprise police checks reveal flouting of norms by many hotels in Visakhapatnam
As part of security measures, the city police conducted surprise inspections at more than 80 hotels and lodges simultaneously on Monday night.
Following instructions from the Commissioner of Police, Shankabratha Bagchi, police teams under the supervision of senior officials conducted the raids between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. They uncovered multiple violations by several hotels including operating without proper licences, mandatory fire No Objection Certificate (NOC), trade licences, and other essential clearances.
Multiple teams took part in the raids in different areas in Zone I and II and each team was equipped with body-worn cameras and included a woman police constable or woman home guard to ensure gender-sensitive procedures during the checks.
The inspections focused on verifying the identity of guests, checking for individuals with Non-Bailable Warrants (NBWs), absconding suspects, and minors. Officials also assessed whether hotels were adhering to operational regulations such as maintaining valid trade licences, fire NOCs, GST registrations, and FSSAI licences. Compliance with safety measures like functioning CCTV cameras, metal detectors, and baggage scanners was also reviewed.
The police discovered that eight hotels lacked a valid fire NOC, while seven hotels were operating without a basic trade licence. As many as 22 hotels did not possess the mandatory FSSAI licence required for serving food in the hotel. Seven hotels had not been updating guest data with the city police's Visitor Monitoring System (VMS), a key tool for tracking the movement of suspicious individuals arriving in the city.
The police have begun coordinating with relevant departments to initiate action pertaining to the violations.
Mr. Bagchi, in a release, stated that such raids will be conducted randomly as part of crime prevention and security measures.

Chhattisgarh police officer accidentally steps on IED while patrolling, killed in blast
A police officer was killed and several others were injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district early on Monday. Additional Superintendent of Police Akash Rao Giripunje, who was posted at Konta division, was patrolling with other personnel on the Konta-Aerobora road near Dronda when he accidentally stepped on a pressure IED believed to have been planted by Maoists, an official said. The patrolling was part of precautions taken ahead of the June 10 country-wide bandh call given by the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist). The officer was rushed to Konta hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries. Other officers and jawans who were with him are under treatment and are said to be out of danger. This takes the total number of security personnel killed in Maoist-related incidents to 18 this year. The number of Maoists killed this year in encounters is 209 in Chhattisgarh, including 192 in the Bastar region. Last year, 219 Maoists were killed in Chhattisgarh, including 217 in the Bastar region.

Officials said they found Sonam in an unconscious state on Saturday night at a 'dhaba' in Ghazipur. She was taken to the Ghazipur Medical College for treatment, where she surrendered before the police, and was subsequently arrested. Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang said that they arrested three other accused in overnight raids. While one person was found in Uttar Pradesh, the other two were arrested from Indore. The accused have told the police that they were hired by Sonam to kill her husband.

How a guide helped solve Meghalaya honeymoon murder case: ‘3 men were walking with Raja Raghuvanshi, Sonam was…'
The Meghalaya police on Monday alleged that the wife of an Indore man – who was murdered in the state during their honeymoon – had planned the killing. Days before the discovery, a tourist guide gave a vital clue to the police as he said he had spotted the victim, Raja Raghuvanshi, walking with three men and his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi. According to the tour guide in Meghalaya, Albert Pde, the couple – Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi – were accompanied by three male tourists on the day they went missing from Meghalaya's Sohra area on May 23. He made the revelations on Saturday, June 7. Also read: Meghalaya police arrest 'missing' wife for Indore man's murder during honeymoon Pde, who is a guide at Mawlakhiat, said that the three men accompanied the couple as they were climbing up over 3,000 steps from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat around 10 am on May 23. He also informed PTI that the four men were talking to each other in Hindi "The four men were walking ahead while the woman was behind. The four men were conversing in Hindi, but I could not understand what they were speaking as I know only Khasi and English," he told PTI. Further, Pde also said that he offered to guide the couple to Nongriat on May 22, a day before they went missing. However, the couple declined his service and went with another guide named Bha Wansai. They spent the night at Shipara homestay and returned the next day without a guide, Pde said. "One accused from Uttar Pradesh and two more persons were held from Indore by Meghalaya Police SIT. The arrested accused have named some more persons. They revealed that the victim's wife had hired them," Meghalaya Director General of Police I Nongrang, told PTI.
