Karen Pirie Season 2: Meet The Cast
Karen Pirie was a hit when it initially premiered in 2022, featuring Lauren Lyle as Scottish detective Karen. Drawing inspiration from Val McDermid's second Inspector Karen Pirie novel, A Darker Domain, the series will focus on the 1984 abduction of wealthy oil heiress Catriona Grant and her two-year-old son Adam, who vanished outside a Fife chip shop after being snatched at gunpoint. When the first breakthrough arrives in decades, Karen and her colleagues find themselves facing their most daunting investigation yet.
A synopsis reads, 'After her bittersweet success in series one, Karen has been promoted to Detective Inspector and seemingly given the authority she has long been fighting for. Just as she's getting into the swing of her powerful new role, she is assigned an infamous unsolved case that will put her under intense scrutiny; from her boss, from the media, and ultimately, from sinister forces that would rather the past stayed in the past.'
'As Karen delves deeper into what happened in the autumn of 1984, political grudges and painful secrets reveal themselves - and it soon becomes clear the past is far from dead.'
Plenty of familiar faces will be returning, along with some new ones. Here's everything to know about the cast of Karen Pirie season 2.
©Opening up about returning for series 2, Lauren said, 'I'm thrilled that we will continue the life of our fearless young detective Karen Pirie, and of course, her bumbag.' Outside of Karen Pirie , Lauren is best known for playing the character of Marsali MacKimmie Fraser in Outlander.

Trump visit will stretch Police Scotland resources to the limit
When Donald Trump visited his Turnberry resort midway through his first term in office, there was a heavy Police Scotland presence. Picture:Maybe it's pre-Fringe stress but we seem to have entered some bizarre parallel universe. On Wednesday morning I actually found myself agreeing with The Daily Mail. That's never happened before. Sign up to our daily newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! Learn More Sorry, there seem to be some issues. Please try again later. Submitting... Don't worry, I didn't actually buy a copy. I've not gone totally unhinged. I just happened to glance at its front page headline in my local newsagent It was leading with a story about the scandalous waste of public money being spent this weekend by Police Scotland, who are mounting a massive security operation during Donald Trump's visit. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Around 6000 cops are going to be involved in making sure the giant orange jelly baby comes to no harm when he pops into his golf resorts in Turnberry and Aberdeenshire. 'Hear, hear' I thought. 'This is a national disgrace.' And it is. Shouldn't the polis be doing their day job of catching paedophiles, fraudsters and other criminals? Instead they are providing a protective blue line around one particular criminal, because he happens to be the President of the United States. Police Scotland have themselves admitted that their resources will be tested to the limit this weekend, so if someone stole your bike last night don't expect a bobby to come calling round any time before Tuesday or Wednesday when the human pumpkin flies back home. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad How many other offenders get the attention of a whole nation's police force? Unless, of course, the Old Bill are coming out in force to protect the Scottish public from Trump's wandering hands. Of course, Trump is not your average offender. He's also the head of state of a nation with whom the UK enjoys a 'special relationship', but he's not visiting Scotland in that capacity. He's over here to on a golfing holiday. There are a number of reason for this huge police deployment, mainly the numerous demonstrations being held in protest at his visit. At midday today, there will be rallies across Scotland, organised by the Stop Trump Coalition. Huge crowds are expected at the demo here at the American Consulate in Edinburgh, as well as Aberdeen and Dumfries. The fact that Trump is not visiting any of these cities should not stop the public from voicing their anger. Hopefully, if road closures don't keep them out, there will be a huge presence at Turnberry, scene of that famous 2016 protest by the late Janey Godley. Hopefully, many thousands will pay homage by waving banners bearing the slogan 'Trump is a c***'. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Humour is an essential weapon against Trump. It's the one thing he can't handle, as can be seen by his attempts to silence American satirists like Jon Stewart and Jimmy Kimmell. CBS announced this week that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will be cancelled when its series ends next May. Catch it online over the next ten months. Many allege this is due to political pressure from the White House. Trump has already tweeted his glee, accusing the host of lacking talent. To which Colbert's response was 'Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism? Go f*** yourself.' Those last three words well be on many banners today, I'm sure.

Gemma Collins' 'risky move after 2 stone weight loss with something to prove'
Former The Only Way Is Essex star Gemma Collins is said to be close to signing a big money deal which could see her return to the I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! jungle She's the diva who's never far from a headline – and Gemma Collins is set to grab some more as she prepares to head back into the jungle, nearly a decade after her famous early exit. This time, however, it's a whole different ballgame and there's serious money (and pride) on the line. The 43-year-old reality star is said to be close to signing a deal to take part in I'm A Celebrity: All Stars, the spin-off series filming this autumn and due to hit our screens next year. Insiders say the offer is 'too good to turn down'. A source claims to new, ' ITV bosses love Gemma because they know they'll get plenty of drama and some fabulous diva moments. She might not last long – in fact, she probably won't – but that will make it funny and unmissable viewing. They want her in there, they know the GC is a box office winner. Love her or loathe her, whether she cries, stamps her feet or has people in stitches, she'll win viewers and that's what they want. 'Gemma has been keeping a relatively low profile – by GC standards – so she knows this could be a real boost. There's an awful lot riding on it. Following years of weight battles she has lost two stone recently, she's in a good place. She's feeling more confident than ever and has said she can't wait to show off her body in a bikini on the show.' But while the big payday may sound like a dream come true – her potential fee is rumoured to be £150, 000, a far cry from the £40,000 she was reportedly given for her first jungle stint in 2014 – there's no denying it comes with a lot of pressure. The jungle whispers come after a difficult time for the former TOWIE star, who revealed last month that she'd been forced to beef up security at her Essex home after being targeted by a stalker – an ordeal she described as one of the most 'frightening' experiences of her life. A big jungle return could be just the boost she needs. But can she go the distance this time? Fans will remember her short-lived appearance in 2014, where she made her mark but faced criticism when she dramatically left after just three days. Who could forget her helicopter meltdown, her flat-out refusal to eat jungle food and those teary confessions in the Bush Telegraph? It was peak GC and that's why appearing on the All Stars edition, to be filmed in South Africa, could be a golden opportunity. Previously sharing the real reason she quit back in 2014, she explained, 'My time was short in the jungle and not many people know that I was robbed and physically attacked 24 hours before leaving for Australia. I didn't want to let anyone down, so I still went in. However, I was in a terrible state and shock, as you can imagine, and couldn't see it through. 'I took lots of stick over it, but if you was robbed and attacked and then sent into the jungle, I'm sure you would have struggled, too. I would never let anyone destroy my dreams again.' According to PR expert Lynn Carratt, Gemma will use a jungle appearance to reignite her TV career. 'She hasn't actually been on our screens since 2022, when she was in a segment on BBC 's Springwatch. She also had a guest section on The Big Breakfast as an agony aunt. 'I don't think she'll be doing this for the money. She's got over 2 million followers on Instagram and is doing lucrative brand deals every week. She's just done one with Netflix for the series Too Much and she has an active sculpt collection at Debenhams. 'Reality TV, however, is Gemma's bread and butter, from TOWIE to Dancing On Ice to her own reality show. That's how she started and how she made her name. With the jungle, she has a lot to prove. She lasted three days last time. People are going to want to see her go through it. She's dramatic, entertaining and unpredictable. 'Everything's been a bit up and down for Gemma, but she's looking great, she's lost two stone and she'll probably lose more before any filming begins. She might feel fitter and be able to handle jungle life better. It's not for the faint-hearted. It's a risk, but if she can prove herself, it could propel her back into the spotlight in a big way.' Well, if the GC back in the jungle is on next year's bingo card, we're here for it!

BRIAN READE: 'Fat-shaming will be new bag-sizing for airlines - start worrying now'
Beware the bonus-conscious airline staff sniffing around for any chance to slap a penalty on the unwitting traveller, says Brian Reade Now that MPs are taking a break from work until a few weeks before the clocks go back, we are officially in the Silly Season. Which means, between now and the inevitable riots outside asylum hotels next month, us media outlets will seek out quirky stories to make you laugh. Like the one about the teenager who runs Warwickshire County Council for bureaucracy-slashing Reform UK demanding £150k of public money to pay people to tell him what to do. The season's biggest laugh, though, is Donald Trump's trip to Scotland, as his presence here always raises a titter. Remember last time, when paragliders flew expletive-ridden banners and comedian Janey Goodley stood outside his golf club with a placard that declared Trump was a thing that rhymed with runt? Sadly, Janey is no longer with us but there's a good chance protestors will repeat her message in 40ft letters on the nearby beach. Already a sign has been erected outside his Aberdeenshire golf course saying: "twinned with Epstein Island" and bald SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn has said he won't be able to meet the president as 'I'll be washing my hair". But the best humour will come when Trump gives an after-dinner speech in one of his clubs, after being allowed to win, yet again, the Bestest Golfer In The World Invitation Trophy, with three mysterious holes-in-one while everyone was distracted. I reckon it will go something like this: 'I feel incredibly humbled to be back in the land of my dear mother, who as you know, left here in days when economic migrants with no papers and English as their second language were welcome in America. Because they were good people. And white. 'She often told me I was related to the great Charles Stuart, which I kinda like. Bonny Prince Donnie sounds nice. And that also makes my wife Melania Queen of Scots and my son Barron The Bruce. 'Mel Gibson, who's a terrific guy - and by the way that racism stuff was fake news - told me he based his Braveheart character on me leading the January 6 uprising. Which was nice. Although, unlike that Wallace guy, I got shot and survived. 'So you see folks, no world leader has ever been more Scottish than me. The only food I eat is from Clan McDonald and when people see me in a kilt they say I have the best legs ever. 'And I have great, great plans for my homeland. I am renaming The Firth of Forth the Firth of Forty-fifth and Forty-seventh US President and I'm going to finish that terrible job done by Crooked Hadrian and build a proper wall, a beautiful wall to keep all dark-looking immigrants out. 'By the way, the Outer Hebrides remind me of Greenland, so I'm going to buy them and turn them into a big, beautiful, military base to hit Russia. 'I will be meeting fans from Celtic and Rangers to get them to end their hatred as I need to score a few more points to get that Nobel peace prize. Something Sleepy Joe never would have done because he was in the IRA. 'Anyway, I have to leave you as I've got a high level meeting with Prince Andrew in Balmoral to discuss child welfare. So haste ye back as us Scotlanders say. And oh, I'm still putting 50% tariffs on whisky, salmon and shortbread.' It's been sad hearing Fiona Phillips's husband Martin Frizell promote a book about my old colleague's battle with Alzheimer's disease. Fiona was a proper Mirror person. A loyal but critical friend of the Labour Party with deeply-held principles who often wrote poignantly about her parents' struggles with dementia, only to be struck down with early-onset Alzheimer's at the age of 61. The book called Remember When, written by our former boss Alison Phillips, charts Fiona's courageous battle against a soul-crushing disease most families have had to cope with, or probably will do. Because, scandalously, as Martin has been pointing out, for every £1 given to cancer research in this country only 31p is spent on dementia research. Which has to change. In the meantime, Fiona, may you face your battle with much courage and love. *** If you break into a cold sweat every time you go through an airport gate fearing you'll be pulled for having an oversized carry-on bag, then you now have good reason to worry. It turns out Ryanair and easyJet award bonuses of just over a quid to staff to spot bulging bags and dish out penalties. I fear this is just the start, and soon the likes of Ryanair's Michael O'Leary will make us declare our body weight on 'environmental grounds' and charge us by the kilo. Expect bonus-sniffing staff to eye you up, guess you're packing too much timber and force you onto scales, before saying: 'Sorry but Sir's been telling porkies about his porkiness. That will be another £50 please.' Fat-shaming will be the new bag-sizing. And being a fat-fascist is the best route to a bumper pay packet. *** Labour MP Dr Simon Opher is set to prescribe free tickets to football matches in a bid to beat depression. The former GP will trial it in Gloucestershire surgeries as an alternative to anti-depressants, saying: "Football is about socialising and roaring on your team, getting excited, taking yourself out of your own life for a short while.' It's also about, most weekends, at least 33% of fans walking home beaten, gutted, miserable, cursing the donkeys in their team and descending into a depression that dogs them for days. So nice idea, doc, but in practice sending already-depressed people to football matches could be a massive own goal. *** Over the decades screenwriter Jimmy McGovern has crafted many profound lines but this week he surpassed himself by condensing into one sentence the real reason why the Establishment is resisting the introduction of a full-blooded Hillsborough Law, which would compel public bodies to tell the truth in the aftermath of major disasters. 'What's going on there is people demanding the right to lie." That, in a nutshell, is the truth. And Labour must not let it happen. THE WEEK'S FIVE BIG QUESTIONS Isn't it funny how the men who abuse women footballers like Jess Carter on social media were also the ones always picked last on the playground and forced to stand, quaking, in goal? Can't the princes William and Harry do what feuding aristocrats used to do and walk into a forest with a pair of pistols and have a duel? Has any political party in any country ever been given as much air time with only four nationally-elected representatives as Reform UK? Do Andrex, with their advert claiming 76% of students hold their poo in at school, really think kids will all start opening their bowels if the toilet paper is soft? How long will it be before people can only draw their state pension on the same date they receive their 100th birthday telegram from the monarch?
