Anifah's chances in Bongawan rest on straight fight, says analyst

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Parti Cinta Sabah president Anifah Aman may now have a better chance of winning the Bongawan state assembly seat in the coming state elections, but only in a straight fight, backed by the ruling state coalition, says a political analyst. Anifah's party lost in all 73 seats contested in 2020, but analyst Lee Kuok Tiung of Universiti Malaysia Sabah said the situation was now different. Anifah would have an advantage now that the party was part of the ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah. However, political analyst James Chin of the University of Tasmania said Anifah would suffer a defeat if there was a three-cornered fight between GRS, Barisan Nasional and Warisan. Chin predicted that Anifah's only path to victory would be in a straight fight, backed fully by GRS, which accepted PCS as its eighth component party in May last year. On Wednesday Anifah announced that he intended to contest the Bongawan state seat. He said he wanted to fight for the people in the constituency, who still face basic infrastructure issues. Lee said Anifah would now have an advantage, with PCS in the ruling coalition, compared with 2020 when PCS contested solo, without an alliance. He said Bongawan is not unfamiliar territory for Anifah, as he previously served as the MP for Kimanis, the parliamentary seat that encompasses Bongawan and Membakut state constituencies. Anifah had also contested the Bongawan seat in 2020 but was defeated by 1,802 votes in a four-cornered fight involving Warisan, Barisan Nasional and the Liberal Democratic Party. Anifah left Umno in 2019 to become an independent, but lost his Kimanis parliamentary seat when the election was annulled due to irregularities. He later joined PCS and became its president in July 2020. In January 2023, Anifah was appointed special adviser on international relations and foreign investment to Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor and was later made a senator. Chin said Anifah's prospects in Bongawan would depend on how many candidates are running for the seat. 'If it is a three-cornered fight between GRS, BN and Warisan, then it is highly likely he will lose again,' Chin told FMT. 'He didn't do that well the last time around and I don't think there are significant changes to warrant better chances.' He said that Anifah's reputation, including as a former federal minister, would not count for much in Sabah, as voters would often focus on personality. Warisan dodging its role in Kinabalu Move, says Sabah rep
Kunak assemblyman Norazlinah Arif said the clear evidence was that all Warisan assemblymen were gathered at the Magellan Sutera Harbour Resort at the time. PETALING JAYA : A Sabah state assembly member has hit back at Warisan leader Shafie Apdal for dodging her claim that Warisan had a direct role in the Kinabalu Move of January 2023 which attempted but failed to unseat Hajiji Noor as Sabah chief minister. Norazlinah Arif, the assembly member for Kunak, who left Warisan shortly afterwards, said: 'The reality is every Sabahan knows he was directly involved.' She said Shafie made a particularly vague response to her by simply denying his role in the Kinabalu Move without presenting facts and instead resorting to making personal jabs at her. 'The clear evidence is when all Warisan assemblymen were gathered at the Magellan Sutera Harbour Resort at the time. Why didn't he dare to give facts to deny Warisan's role in the move? Why did he just make a vague statement?' she told FMT. Shafie had been scheduled to hold a press conference at the resort amid talk that Hajiji's government was about to collapse. The event was later cancelled, although members of the media and Warisan assemblymen were gathering there. The following day, Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin, then a deputy chief minister, announced that Sabah Umno had withdrawn support for Hajiji. However, several Umno assemblymen refused to toe the party line, while Hajiji also received the backing of Pakatan Harapan. Bung was then sacked from the state Cabinet while PH assemblymen were brought into Hajiji's Cabinet. Norazlinah had described the Kinabalu Move as the ultimate betrayal of Sabahans, when they were hoping that the federal unity pact would also translate into unity in the state government to prioritise the rakyat. Shafie maintained that it was not his political move, but stemmed from a conflict between Hajiji and Bung. 'We were in the opposition benches all the while,' he had said. Norazlinah mocks 'traitor' label, fires back at Azis Norazlinah fired back after being labelled as a 'traitor' to Warisan. She said the party's leaders and elected representatives were also mostly 'traitors' in their own right. Shafie was formerly an Umno vice-president, his deputy, Darell Leiking, was from PKR, and the party also accepted DAP assemblymen Justin Wong (Sri Tanjong) and Calvin Chong (Elopura), in 2022. Norazlinah also said Warisan information chief Azis Jamman should 'focus on his own problems', after he cynically said he would help her lobby for a seat to contest on a Gabungan Rakyat Sabah ticket in the coming state elections. She said Azis should be the one looking for a seat after having lost his Sepanggar parliamentary seat in the 2022 general election. Azis also does not hold a state seat. 'Unlike him, I don't need to lobby (for a seat) by making statements. My hard work in Kunak is already proof (of my service) and will determine whether I will be re-elected by the people or not,' said Norazlinah, a two-term assembly member. 'I hope the people of Sabah will evaluate (Warisan) wisely and not be influenced by the slander they throw around. Don't repeat past mistakes,' she said.

Kinabatangan folks deserve better: Chief Minister

KINABATANGAN: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said Kinabatangan deserves a new era of development to ensure people in the district benefit from greater progress under the State Government. He said the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Government has clearly outlined development plans for the district through the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) roadmap, covering the economy, education and people's well-being. 'Sometimes we wonder why some quarters refuse to acknowledge what has been achieved. 'We have a track record of helping the people and uplifting the economy through the three main sectors of industry, tourism and agriculture,' he said at launching the groundbreaking ceremony for Seri Milian New Township at Kota Kinabatangan's Open Terminal Square on Friday. In conjunction with the event, Hajiji also presented 255 Native Title Land Programme Survey (Pantas) land titles for the Lamag constituency covering 582.426 hectares (1,439.21 acres), land grants to the Kinabatangan District Council involving 157.48 acres, and three Panatas titles for the Sukau constituency covering 16.224 hectares (40.09 acres). Present were State Community Development and People's Well-being Minister Datuk James Ratib, Housing and Urban Development Board Chairman Datuk Masiung Banah and Housing and Local Government Ministry Permanent Secretary Datuk Jamili Nais, together with Kinabatangan district officials. Hajiji highlighted several achievements of his administration, including human capital development, improving people's well-being, and increasing State revenue from oil and gas. He said the funds were channelled back to the people through initiatives such as a RM300 monthly allowance for a year to poor and hardcore poor households, benefiting over 10,000 recipients. The SMJ Affordable Housing Programme was also expanded to 40 units in each state constituency, including Lamag and Sukau, to provide better living standards for the people. In addition, the State Government through the Community Development and People's Well-being Ministry distributed 100 dialysis machines to government hospitals and clinics statewide to provide free treatment for kidney patients. 'Under the SMJ, we have recorded over 400 initiatives, of which 94 per cent have already been implemented. Unfortunately, the opposition pretends not to see these efforts,' he said. Hajiji, who is also GRS Chairman, urged voters in Lamag and Sukau to make the right choice in the upcoming 17th State Election to avoid being left behind in development. 'Only the government of the day can deliver. GRS is the government now, and God willing, will continue after the next election. Use your wisdom, don't be swayed by social media, which is full of slander and lies. 'We want a positive society that works hard for progress, not one that indulges in daily insults and slander,' he said. On the Seri Milian New Township, Hajiji said the project will be a 'game changer' that transforms Kinabatangan within the next five to 10 years. The 157.48-acre mixed development project will serve as a new focal point between major towns such as Tawau, Sandakan and Kota Kinabalu. 'This development comes at the right time as it can drive economic growth by providing commercial lots, small and medium industries, as well as job opportunities for the local community,' said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Joachim Gunsalam. The township's strategic location also has the potential to attract new investors, particularly in industrial buildings to support the existing oil palm sector, while encouraging both domestic and international tourists to stay overnight before continuing to eco-tourism spots in the district. The project, a joint venture with Sunmow Construction Sdn Bhd under a design, build and finance model, will feature modern facilities including 58 units of 1½-storey semi-detached light industrial lots, 80 units of two-storey terrace industrial lots, 256 units of two-storey shop offices, 548 single-storey terrace houses, a 13-storey hotel with 200 rooms, mosque, petrol station, tourism information centre, supermarket, futsal hall, food court, open car park and the new Kinabatangan District Council office. 'This development will raise surrounding property values, increase local council revenue through assessment rates, service charges, licensing and rental of premises, and more importantly, add to the supply of affordable housing for the people,' said Joachim. Joachim described the township as a development leap for Kinabatangan, transforming Kota Kinabatangan and driving new urban growth in surrounding areas. 'I believe this project will become a catalyst for other development plans already drawn up with the District Council for the benefit of the local community, with the support and approval of the State Government,' he said. Warisan hardly solved woes they accuse GRS of: Malakun

Kota Kinabalu: Warisan did little about legacy problems when in power that the GRS Government is now doing its best to resolve, said former Moyog Assemblyman Datuk Seri Panglima Clarence Bongkos Malakun. 'They harp on legacy issues like water and electricity shortages but they should not 'play possum'. 'They are in the know that concerted efforts have been made to ensure long-term water and electricity availability,' he said, adding the opposition would use every opportunity to discredit the GRS and distort facts to garner support. He said Sabah voters are increasingly drawn to local-based parties and coalitions such as GRS which is a coalition of eight local parties. 'I am certain Sabah voters have already made up their mind who should helm the government the next five years,' he said. He hoped there would be give and take among the eight Gabungan component parties when discussing seat allocations. 'I believe no party will get the short end of the stick. Any disapproval or discontent after that should not be allowed because it could potentially create animosity at a time when solidarity must be top priority.' The focus would then be on winning the hearts and minds of the people so that Sabah would remain in safe hands under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor and his team for another five years. Malakun who is a member of the Sabah Economic Advisory Council (SEAC) said a resounding success for GRS is crucial for effective governance. 'Hence, only winnable candidates should be fielded. GRS should seriously consider fielding young and capable candidates to prepare them for future leadership roles.' He believed it would be very difficult for Barisan Nasional (BN) which ruled Sabah from 1994 till 2018 and Warisan from 2018 till 2020 to regain the people's trust and support. 'BN's influence is diminishing and it has a mountain to climb to regain political dominance in Sabah. 'With only 13 seats in the State Legislative Assembly, it is facing serious challenge to reassert itself as a force,' he said. Currently GRS holds the majority in the Assembly with 42 while Warisan and Umno has 14 and 13 seats, respectively.
