Anifah's chances in Bongawan rest on straight fight, says analyst

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Parti Cinta Sabah president Anifah Aman may now have a better chance of winning the Bongawan state assembly seat in the coming state elections, but only in a straight fight, backed by the ruling state coalition, says a political analyst. Anifah's party lost in all 73 seats contested in 2020, but analyst Lee Kuok Tiung of Universiti Malaysia Sabah said the situation was now different. Anifah would have an advantage now that the party was part of the ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah. However, political analyst James Chin of the University of Tasmania said Anifah would suffer a defeat if there was a three-cornered fight between GRS, Barisan Nasional and Warisan. Chin predicted that Anifah's only path to victory would be in a straight fight, backed fully by GRS, which accepted PCS as its eighth component party in May last year. On Wednesday Anifah announced that he intended to contest the Bongawan state seat. He said he wanted to fight for the people in the constituency, who still face basic infrastructure issues. Lee said Anifah would now have an advantage, with PCS in the ruling coalition, compared with 2020 when PCS contested solo, without an alliance. He said Bongawan is not unfamiliar territory for Anifah, as he previously served as the MP for Kimanis, the parliamentary seat that encompasses Bongawan and Membakut state constituencies. Anifah had also contested the Bongawan seat in 2020 but was defeated by 1,802 votes in a four-cornered fight involving Warisan, Barisan Nasional and the Liberal Democratic Party. Anifah left Umno in 2019 to become an independent, but lost his Kimanis parliamentary seat when the election was annulled due to irregularities. He later joined PCS and became its president in July 2020. In January 2023, Anifah was appointed special adviser on international relations and foreign investment to Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor and was later made a senator. Chin said Anifah's prospects in Bongawan would depend on how many candidates are running for the seat. 'If it is a three-cornered fight between GRS, BN and Warisan, then it is highly likely he will lose again,' Chin told FMT. 'He didn't do that well the last time around and I don't think there are significant changes to warrant better chances.' He said that Anifah's reputation, including as a former federal minister, would not count for much in Sabah, as voters would often focus on personality. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called for the prime minister to ensure his party is restored to its quota of seven ministers in the Cabinet following Tengku Zafrul Aziz's resignation from the party. Zahid said Umno has only six ministers now, Bernama reported. 'For me, what matters more is that Umno is represented by seven ministers in the Cabinet. Although we are not sure if Tengku Zafrul's appointment was under Umno's capacity or otherwise, the assumption is that it was because he was from Umno. 'With Tengku Zafrul no longer in Umno, the party has a right to request that a minister's portfolio be given to us,' he was quoted as saying after an event in Sarawak today. Zahid also confirmed that Umno has officially received Tengku Zafrul's resignation letter, which was submitted to the party's executive secretary, Sumali Reduan, earlier this morning. 'Yesterday, when we checked (after the news broke), we had not received the letter,' he said. On whether Tengku Zafrul violated any agreements signed during the 15th general election (GE15) by leaving the party, Zahid said he would consult Umno's legal advisers. So I need to check with Umno's legal advisers first,' he said. Malay teachers must reclaim role as community activists, says PN leader

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: A Perikatan Nasional MP has urged Malay teachers to revive the historic role they played in activism that contributed significantly to the Malay independence movement, culture and politics. Saifuddin Abdullah said Malay teachers should serve as catalysts contributing ideas, community leaders and political activists to steer the nation's future. 'Historically, Malay teachers have provided crucial leadership and have taken management roles in political parties. 'Their involvement has enabled parties to reach their peak and played a key role in advancing the interests of the Malay community,' the Indera Mahkota MP said when delivering a keynote address at the Forum Pendidikan Melayu, organised by the Selangor Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semananjung, at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. 'With teachers playing such key roles, they were known then as 'parti berjuang' (parties that led the struggle). Today, with fewer teachers involved, some parties have become 'parti berwang' (cash-rich parties).' Saifuddin, who heads the PN education bureau, also said teachers must be meaningfully involved in decision-making at all levels — from the schools right up to the education ministry. Advertisement To better support teachers, he proposed expanding the number of subject matter experts, increasing funding for education research, improving career schemes, and easing teacher workloads by hiring more support staff and clerical personnel. He added that these ideas were part of PN's education reform proposals, completed in March last year.
