Former Packers WR Antonio Freeman's son is rising star in American soccer
The son of former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Antonio Freeman is becoming a rising star in American soccer.
As noted by Paul Tenorio of The Athletic, Alex Freeman -- Antonio's 20-year-old son -- is emerging as a breakout player while with Orlando City of the MLS and has caught the eye of the United States men's national team. Freeman, who plays a defensive wing position with attacking responsibilities at right back, was included on a 60-player preliminary roster ahead of the CONCACAF Gold Cup and could play in friendlies for the USMNT next month.
Freeman has appeared in 17 games and scored three goals for Orlando City over the last three seasons. He's made 14 appearances and scored all three of his goals during the 2025 season, when he rose into a starting position at right back and quickly became a breakout player in the top American soccer league.
From Justin Ruderman of MLS: "Before the 2025 campaign, the Orlando City homegrown fullback had a mere 10 minutes of MLS action under his belt. This year, he's already exceeded 1,200 minutes by appearing in all 14 Lions matches (starting 13), while being arguably the most dangerous attacking fullback in the league. Just 20 years old, Freeman has already scored three times and given an assist to support Orlando's devastating attack."
The big-time national stage is next. Freeman has previously appeared in games for the age-limited national teams, including six games for the under-19 team and five for the under-23 team, but he could make his national debut soon. USMNT coach Maurico Pochettino called up Freeman on the training camp roster before June matches against Turkey and Switzerland. Freeman is one of eight defenders on the 27-player roster.
"I think all the players that are for the first time with us, I think all deserve to be there, deserve to have the chance. … I am so clear about that," Pochettino said. "After it's about not to lose the possibility when you have the chance."
Freeman's father was a decorated receiver for the Packers. He won Super Bowl XXXI and was an All-Pro and Pro Bowler in 1998. He also set the Super Bowl record for longest touchdown reception (81 yards, since broken), led the NFL in receiving yards in 1998 and ranks eighth in franchise history with 6,651 receiving yards and sixth in receiving touchdowns with 57. He played nine NFL seasons, including eight in Green Bay (1995-2001, 2003).

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Blackhawks have hired Mike Vellucci as an assistant coach for Jeff Blashill's first staff with his new team. The Blackhawks announced the addition of Vellucci on Monday. He joins Michael Peca and Anders Sorensen as Blashill's assistants. Goaltending coach Jimmy Waite, video coach Matt Meacham and assistant video coach Adam Gill round out the staff. He was an assistant general manager and director of hockey operations for the Carolina Hurricanes from 2014-19. 'Serving as an assistant coach at the world championship this summer and winning a gold medal for our country alongside Frank Nazar and Alex Vlasic will bring such valuable experience to this group," Blashill said in a release. "That kind of championship-caliber background only makes our team better and I'm excited to get to work.' Blashill, 51, took over as Chicago's head coach last month. Predictions for the upcoming season seem to be all over the place for the Jets, with some analysts suggesting a potential playoff run, while other suggest the Jets are headed for another top selection in the NFL Draft. Sporting News' Peter Martuneac predicts four Jets will make their first Pro Bowls in 2025. Martuneac's first selection is the new quarterback in town, Justin Fields. "For the Jets, it begins and ends with their likely QB1, Justin Fields." Noted Martuneac. "Despite streaky play thus far in his four NFL seasons, Fields has flashed plenty of glimpses of an elite quarterback. And, to be fair to Fields, he was never surrounded by the type of talent this Jets team currently has, nor did he receive much competent coaching while in Chicago. If the Jets can finally unlock Fields and get him to his full potential, the sky's the limit, and the early returns in OTA's are promising. Not only would he be a Pro Bowler, but an All-Pro award would likely be in play, as well." Advertisement Fields' No. 1 target for the upcoming season and former college teammate is also primed for his first Pro Bowl appearance, despite being potentially snubbed in previous years, according to Martuneac. "He may have been Rookie of the Year in 2022, but Wilson has somehow failed to win a Pro Bowl award despite starting his career off with three straight 1,000 yard seasons. And he did all that with mostly questionable quarterback play." Wrote Martuneac. "Now he has his old Ohio State teammate Justin Fields throwing him the ball, and they already appear to be recapturing that old chemistry that made Ohio State's offense so electric in 2020. If Fields lives up to his potential, expect Wilson to be the main beneficiary of that which should be more than enough for his first Pro Bowl nod." Completing a trifecta of offensive Pro Bowl selections is Breece Hall. Hall's offseason has been a bit tumultuous, with head coach Aaron Glenn suggesting he may opt for a running back by committee approach, which may limit Hall's carries. But Martuneac believes Hall is about to embark on his best season yet. "Despite somewhat of a down year in 2024, Hall is primed for a career year. By adding Justin Fields, one of the most dynamic running quarterbacks in the NFL, the Jets' run game has the juice for an explosive season. On top of that, they greatly improved the offensive line, as well." Wrote Martuneac. "Don't be surprised if Hall flirts with 2,000 total yards in 2025 give the improvements to both the O-line and quarterback position. The ceiling is truly sky-high for him." Advertisement On the defensive side of the ball, 2024 breakout star Will McDonald IV will finally get his flowers, according to Martuneac. "When the Jets drafted McDonald in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, most analysts had little good to say about the pick, and his rookie season seemed to confirm those doubts. But McDonald silenced all the haters with a mini-breakout in 2024 in which he registered 10.5 sacks and 24 QB hits." Martuneac wrote. "With the highly regarded defensive mind of Aaron Glenn now in New York, expect McDonald to have a true breakout season in 2025. I would not be surprised to see him hit 17 sacks this year. If he can get those numbers and lead a dominant Jets defense to the playoffs, he's a shoo-in for his first Pro Bowl award."
