Bill Belichick reveals key details about taking New England Patriots coaching job in 2000
Believe it or not, Bill Belichick wasn't always a winning head coach. Infact, during his first head coaching gig with the Cleveland Browns from 1991-1995, he compiled a losing record and just one playoff appearance. Belichick took over for the New England Patriots in 2000, with his storied history in Foxborough speaking for itself: six Super Bowl titles, 17 AFC East titles and coaching some guy named Tom Brady. Belichick parted ways in New England after the 2023-2024 NFL season – and is now leading your North Carolina Tar Heels. On Wednesday, Robert Kraft said he took a big risk by hiring Belichick back in 1999. Belichick immediately clapped back at his former boss, telling ESPN he took a big risk by joining a then-sorry franchise. "As I told Robert multiple times through the years, I took a big risk by taking the New England Patriots head coaching job," Belichick said. "I already had an opportunity to be the Head Coach of the New York Jets, but the ownership situation was unstable." New England wasn't a perennial Super Bowl contender when Belichick took over, but it wasn't exactly the loser it has been since 2022. The Patriots made three consecutive NFL postseason appearances from 1996-1998, losing Super Bowl XXXI to the Green Bay Packers, but missed the playoffs two straight seasons before bringing Belichick in. You could also say that UNC took a big risk hiring Belichick, who has yet to coach at the college level. Belichick will be leading young men largely aged 18-21, instead of adults anywhere from 22 to their 40s, but is proving to be a great offseason coach via the transfer portal and high school recruiting. Now, we await the on-field results of North Carolina's first season under Belichick. Will Bubba Cunningham's "big risk" pay off? Todd Haley: Bill Parcells Had Dan Campbell Start Fight At Cowboys Practice
Detroit Lions' head coach Dan Campbell is the man in Motown, but apparently he was previously Bill Parcells' hitman on the Dallas Cowboys back in his days as a tight end. Former Cowboys wide receiver coach Todd Haley, who was with the organization from 2004 to 2006, revealed an amazing story about Parcells and Campbell, who played for the Cowboys from 2003-05. "Practice on a Wednesday was going bad. You could see Coach Parcells getting heated up. He was not happy with the way anything was going. There was no energy, and I see him call Dan over to the side and say a couple words to him. And Dan runs back into the huddle, and Parcells with his arms crossed like he always did, walked over to me, and he said, 'Watch this Todd.' A fight ensued on the next play, and Dan Campbell was in the middle of it," Haley said on the latest edition of ESPN's "This is Football" podcast. "As coaches, you got to do whatever you have to do to get things going in the right direction, and he knew that Dan was his man to get in there and stir it up, and it worked. All of a sudden, everybody is hooping and hollering, excited, and good things happened from there." Considering Campbell's "bite a kneecap off" line at his Lions introductory press conference and infectious passion on the sideline and in interviews, Haley's story is, without a doubt, believable. Campbell spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the New York Giants (1999-2002), who selected him in the third round of the 1999 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M. After the three-year stint in Dallas, the tight end spent the final three seasons of his career with the Lions (2006-08). Campbell finished his career with 91 receptions, 934 receiving yards and 11 receiving touchdowns. As a head coach, Campbell has taken the Lions from the NFL's basement to the party on the rooftop. After a 3-13-1 first season (2021), the Lions have posted 9-8, 12-5 and 15-2 campaigns under Campbell, highlighted by reaching the NFC Championship Game in 2023, winning back-to-back NFC North titles (2023-24) and earning the No. 1 seed in the NFC in 2024. As for Parcells, the Cowboys became his final NFL head-coaching stint, with the franchise going a combined 34-30 under him from 2003-06, which included making the playoffs in 2003 and 2006. Of course, the Hall of Fame head coach won two Super Bowls as head coach of the Giants (1986 and 1990 seasons), helped the New England Patriots reach Super Bowl XXXI and also helped the New York Jets reach the AFC Championship Game in the 1998 season. Meanwhile, Haley coached under Parcells on both the Jets and Cowboys and went on to have three NFL offensive coordinator gigs (Arizona Cardinals, Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns) and was the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs from 2009-11. He was most recently the head coach of the then-USFL's Memphis Showboats in 2023. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? New York Giants legend Bill Parcells to be inducted into Patriots Hall of Fame
New York Giants legend Bill Parcells to be inducted into Patriots Hall of Fame Legendary New York Giants head coach Bill Parcells will soon add to the long list of honors that currently line his resume. In addition to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Giants Ring of Honor, Parcells will be inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame during a ceremony on Saturday, September 20 at 4:00 p.m. ET on the Patriot Place Plaza. Parcells served as head coach of the Patriots from 1993 to 1996, helping restore credibility and competitive success to a struggling franchise. Inheriting a team that had gone 14-50 over the previous four seasons, including an NFL worst 2-14 season in 1992 and 1-15 season in 1990, Parcells made an immediate impact. In 1994, he led the Patriots on a season-ending seven-game win streak to secure their first playoff berth in eight years. The performance earned Parcells NFL Coach of the Year honors. After finishing 6-10 in 1995, the Patriots rebounded with an 11-win season in 1996, tying the then franchise record for wins and earning their first division title in a decade. After a convincing, 28-3, victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the divisional playoff game in foggy Foxborough, the Patriots hosted their first AFC Championship game and defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars, 20-6, to reach Super Bowl XXXI, marking just the second Super Bowl appearance in franchise history. Parcells was a Patriots Hall of Fame finalist five times (2011, 2012, 2014, 2020 and 2023) before his 2025 induction. A Pro Football Hall of Famer (Class of 2013), Parcells is the only head coach in NFL history to lead four different teams to the playoffs and three different teams to a conference championship game. He is also a member of the Patriots 1990s All-Decade Team. Although Parcells' career success transcends what he did with the Giants, he is most well-known for his time as linebackers coach (1981-1982), defensive coordinator (1979, 1981-1982), and head coach (1983-1991) of Big Blue. During his time with the Giants, Parcells led the team to two Super Bowl championships, including their first ever (1986). He was also named Pro Football Weekly NFL Coach of the Year, The Sporting News NFL Coach of the Year, and AP NFL Coach of the Year that season. Parcells will be inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame alongside wide receiver Julian Edelman.

Former Packers WR Antonio Freeman's son is rising star in American soccer
Former Packers WR Antonio Freeman's son is rising star in American soccer The son of former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Antonio Freeman is becoming a rising star in American soccer. As noted by Paul Tenorio of The Athletic, Alex Freeman -- Antonio's 20-year-old son -- is emerging as a breakout player while with Orlando City of the MLS and has caught the eye of the United States men's national team. Freeman, who plays a defensive wing position with attacking responsibilities at right back, was included on a 60-player preliminary roster ahead of the CONCACAF Gold Cup and could play in friendlies for the USMNT next month. Freeman has appeared in 17 games and scored three goals for Orlando City over the last three seasons. He's made 14 appearances and scored all three of his goals during the 2025 season, when he rose into a starting position at right back and quickly became a breakout player in the top American soccer league. From Justin Ruderman of MLS: "Before the 2025 campaign, the Orlando City homegrown fullback had a mere 10 minutes of MLS action under his belt. This year, he's already exceeded 1,200 minutes by appearing in all 14 Lions matches (starting 13), while being arguably the most dangerous attacking fullback in the league. Just 20 years old, Freeman has already scored three times and given an assist to support Orlando's devastating attack." The big-time national stage is next. Freeman has previously appeared in games for the age-limited national teams, including six games for the under-19 team and five for the under-23 team, but he could make his national debut soon. USMNT coach Maurico Pochettino called up Freeman on the training camp roster before June matches against Turkey and Switzerland. Freeman is one of eight defenders on the 27-player roster. "I think all the players that are for the first time with us, I think all deserve to be there, deserve to have the chance. … I am so clear about that," Pochettino said. "After it's about not to lose the possibility when you have the chance." Freeman's father was a decorated receiver for the Packers. He won Super Bowl XXXI and was an All-Pro and Pro Bowler in 1998. He also set the Super Bowl record for longest touchdown reception (81 yards, since broken), led the NFL in receiving yards in 1998 and ranks eighth in franchise history with 6,651 receiving yards and sixth in receiving touchdowns with 57. He played nine NFL seasons, including eight in Green Bay (1995-2001, 2003).
