Karjat Riverbed Mining Under Scrutiny After Complaints of Illegal Blasting

Navi Mumbai: In response to complaints and a TOI report about the illegal blasting of riverbanks and hillsides in Karjat taluka, the Raigad district administration has assured that authorities will prevent the recurrence of such incidents. Following a TOI report on May 12 this year, environmental watchdog NatConnect Foundation wrote to the Chief Minister regarding a series of illegal uses of explosives, including crude bombs and gelatine sticks, in rural areas of Karjat taluka for extracting earth and rocks from riverbanks and hillsides. Local residents stated that a complaint against illegal quarrying in the Bhaktawadi and Shingdol-Ambivali areas by a resident led to retaliatory actions. NatConnect Director B N Kumar informed the Chief Minister, citing a media report. Quarry operators detonated two bombs near the complainant's residence, shaking windows. Environmentalists warned that such illegal activities could also damage biodiversity. "The Chief Minister's office referred the issue to the Raigad collector, and NatConnect followed up seeking information via the Right To Action (RTI) Act route on actions taken on the Chief Minister's mail. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Malaysians don't know about this! iOS Credit Read More Undo The collector's office instructed the Karjat tahsildar to investigate. Dhananjay Jadhav, the tahsildar and executive magistrate, responded to NatConnect stating that his officials inspected the river site, which was filled with water," said Kumar. According to a local activist, members of two local communities are primarily responsible for using explosives and heavy machinery to extract stones and rocks from these areas. Illegal activities have resulted in the felling of mature trees to create access paths for JCBs to reach riverbanks for unlawful soil excavation. Residents say the continuous blasts have adversely impacted the water level and quality in the river. The complaints say that water flows into the holes created by the blasts. It is also environmentally unsound to keep blasting the riverbanks' bottoms, said an activist. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). RAIPUR: In what's being called as 'jolt' to Maoist outfits in Chhattisgarh, a coordinated anti-Naxal campaign led to mass surrenders in Narayanpur and Dantewada and key arrests in Bijapur on Wednesday. In Narayanpur, eight Maoists, including two women and senior cadre DVCM Suklal Jurrie who carried Rs 8 lakh bounty, laid down arms before superintendent of police Robinson Guria. The group, carrying a combined reward of Rs 30 lakh, was active in the Kutul area of Abujhmarh. Others included supply team members and party workers, each carrying rewards between Rs 1-2 lakh. The surrendered Maoists admitted during interrogation that top Maoist leaders exploit tribal communities under the guise of 'protecting jal, jungle, and zameen.' Police said that a woman cadre revealed that women members face physical and mental exploitation, describing their lives in the movement as 'a living hell.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The 5 Books Warren Buffett Recommends You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Each surrendering cadre was given Rs 50,000 as rehabilitation incentive and will receive benefits under the state's surrender and rehabilitation policy, including housing, security, employment, and skill development support. Officials termed the surrender a 'strategic breakthrough' in Abujhmarh stronghold. In Dantewada, 21 Maoists—13 of them carrying a cumulative bounty of Rs 25.5 lakh—surrendered under district's Lone Varatu (return home) and Puna Narkem (new dawn) campaigns. Among them was Kaye alias Kesha Lekam who carried Rs 8 lakh, accused of involvement in a 2025 encounter in Parasbeda forests. Women cadres included Jamli Kuhdam and Kumari Hidme alias Vijjo Oyam, both carrying Rs 1 lakh bounties and accused of participating in multiple encounters. Others were involved in digging roads, felling trees, and planting Maoist posters during bandh calls. In Bijapur, joint teams of DRG and Bhairamgarh police arrested five active Maoists, including four carrying rewards totaling Rs 6 lakh, during a combing operation in the forests of Bangoli. Explosives, digging tools, and other banned materials were recovered. The arrested cadres were later produced before a local court.
