ASEAN-AIPA interface to tackle climate, food security, cross-border crime
AIPA President, who is also Dewan Rakyat Speaker, Tan Sri Dr Johari Abdul, said the resolutions would be tabled before being submitted to the government for feedback and commitment.
'We have agreed that all the concerns brought forward by the parliaments, through their respective speakers, will be presented during tomorrow's session, where government and parliamentary leaders will meet face to face.
'Climate change is a critical issue. The world must act collectively to address it, and we want the government to take more decisive action,' he told reporters after chairing the ASEAN-AIPA Interface pre-meeting at Parliament today.
Also present at the pre-meeting were AIPA Secretariat Secretary Ar Siti Rozaimeriyanty Abd Rahman, Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat Datuk Dr Ramli Mohd Nor, and Alice Lau Kiong Yieng, along with ASEAN parliamentary representatives and more than 50 delegates.
Earlier, delegates visited the Deer Park within the Parliament compound. The deer were a gift from Indonesia's second president, Suharto, in 1983 — a symbol of the longstanding diplomatic ties among ASEAN nations, particularly between Malaysia and Indonesia, and the strengthening of legislative cooperation across the region.
Delegates also toured the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara, before attending an official luncheon.
The ASEAN-AIPA Interface, to be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit, will serve as a key platform for dialogue between ASEAN heads of state and government and AIPA representatives, including speakers and deputy speakers.
The session is expected to be chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, under the theme 'Parliament at the Forefront for Inclusive Growth and a Sustainable ASEAN'.

Asean reaffirms neutrality, sustainability, and unity amid global uncertainty
JAKARTA (Bernama-Xinhua): Member states of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean) are striving to uphold neutrality, promote diplomacy, and accelerate sustainability efforts amid intensifying global tensions and environmental challenges, Asean Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn said on Friday. Speaking at the 58th Asean Day Celebration, held under the theme "Toward an Inclusive and Sustainable Asean Future" at the Asean Secretariat Office in Jakarta, Kao emphasised that Asean's principled neutrality and commitment to dialogue can serve as a stabilising force in a volatile world. "In uncertain times, we must remain a steady and stabilising force, offering space for honest dialogue, practical cooperation, and principled neutrality, where differences can be bridged and solutions be found," he said. "Even amid tensions close to home, we are guided by the belief that diplomacy and dialogue pave the way to a lasting peace," Kao noted. He said that beyond geopolitics, the region faces urgent environmental challenges. Climate change, natural disasters, and resource scarcity are already profoundly affecting Asean countries. In response, Asean is advancing several major initiatives, including long-standing cooperation on transboundary haze, the establishment of the Asean Centre for Climate Change in Brunei Darussalam, efforts to build a regional power grid known as the Asean Power Grid, and accelerating a renewable energy transition. "These reflect a growing resolve to confront the climate crisis together. Sustainability also encompasses economic resilience, diversifying supply chains, enhancing food and energy security, and building smart, green infrastructure that will support future generations," he said. "Asean cannot afford to treat sustainability as an abstract ideal or a future concern. It must be a concrete, urgent strategy embedded in everything we do," he added. Representing President Prabowo Subianto at the celebration, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono reiterated Indonesia's commitment to strengthening Asean as a peaceful, resilient, innovative, and people-oriented region. Malaysia, Singapore hold talks to explore new areas of cooperation
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia and Singapore discuss strengthening bilateral relations and exploring new areas of cooperation, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. In a statement on Saturday (Aug 9), the Deputy Prime Minister said the talks took place during his working visit to Singapore, where he met the Republic's top leaders: Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Deputy Prime Minister and Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong and President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. He mentioned that in the meeting with Wong, the focus was on enhancing long-standing bilateral relations, particularly through strategic projects aimed at increasing foreign direct investment (FDI) and generating more employment opportunities in Malaysia. Both leaders also explored new cooperation in tourism, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), and people-to-people exchanges to foster long-term understanding. The two sides also discussed sharing best practices in regulating the gig economy, a growing sector in both countries. Ahmad Zahid said Malaysia and Singapore are reviewing the matter from legal and policy perspectives. 'I also shared Malaysia's initiatives to support gig workers through social protection and progressive policies, as part of efforts to build a competitive digital economy,' he said. During discussions with Gan, both leaders concurred on the importance of fully leveraging the Asean market's vast potential to boost bilateral trade. Ahmad Zahid also highlighted Malaysia's position as the region's halal hub. During the meeting, Gan also informed Ahmad Zahid that Singapore had sent TVET trainers to Malaysia. The working visit concluded with a luncheon hosted by President Tharman. Ahmad Zahid described the day's discussions as highly productive. 'I am confident that the outcomes of this meeting will pave the way for closer strategic cooperation between Malaysia and Singapore, for the continued well-being and prosperity of our two brotherly nations.
