In wake of ceasefire, damaged homes in a Jammu neighbourhood bear witness to human cost of conflict

On Saturday morning, Rajinder Kumar, his wife and two sons were cleaning debris in their small house in Jammu city's Rehari Colony.
The tensions between India and Pakistan that had begun to rise since the commencement of Operation Sindoor on Wednesday had weighed heavy on Kumar's mind but he never expected the conflict to come to his own doorstep.
Kumar's slumber was disrupted by a loud bang inside his house at around 5.35, waking up his family. Within a matter of seconds they were blinded by falling shards of their ceiling, concrete dust and smoke.
'We ran outside as fast as we could,' he said.
Residents of the colony say that there was a loud bang but no explosion or fire. It is unclear whether this was a single explosive, or several that failed to detonate, or whether it was the debris of an intercepted aircraft or shells fired from Pakistan.
Next door to Rajinder Kumar, his brother, Jatinder Kumar, was shaken awake too. 'We rushed outside to save our lives,' he said.
His wife had been taken to hospital with injuries, Jatinder Kumar said. A woman named Shweta said her husband also had to be taken to hospital.
Besides the houses of the Kumar brothers that seemed to have borne the brunt of the projectile's impact, at least three other houses across from theirs suffered notable damage. A few other houses had their windowpanes broken with the impact.
As Indian officials on Saturday evening announced a ceasefire with Pakistan, the damage in Rehari Colony stood as testimony to the human cost of the conflict.
Jammu and Kashmir and northern states have been subjected to a barrage of drone attacks by Pakistan in retaliation for Operation Sindoor, which India launched on nine sites across the border after terrorists shot dead 26 people in Pahalgam. Indian officials say between 300-400 Pakistani drones were intercepted.
More than a dozen residents of Jammu and Kashmir's border region have been killed in intense shelling by Pakistan.
By Saturday evening, the authorities had not made a statement about the nature of the projectiles that hit Rehari.
In Rehari, the door to Rajinder Kumar's small single-storeyed house opens up to their tiny living room that is dominated by a sofa and two plastic chairs. A small passage leads to a bedroom in the back. One of Kumar's sons was asleep on the sofa and was lucky to have escaped serious injuries.
For about an hour, residents say local authorities did not respond to the situation. 'We called everyone we could, but nobody came to our help,' said Kumar.
By 8.30 am, the colony was swarming with personnel of the State Disaster Relief Force, the police, the Indian Army and the chief minister's security team. Twenty minutes later, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah arrived.
Since Jammu and Kashmir was downgraded to Union territory status in 2019, much administrative power lies in the hands of the Centre. His visit and the arrangements that it entailed caused some anger among the residents.
'They said nothing to us,' said a neighbour of Kumar, who was helping with the clean up. 'We even asked [the personnel on ground] for help to open a jammed door but they didn't even do that.'
Kumar's brother, Jatinder, also complained that the authorities had not been helpful. He said that his injured wife had to be taken to hospital by the neighbours.
'We had called everyone [in the administration], but nobody came for help,' Jatinder Kumar said. 'They came an hour later.
He too was unimpressed with Omar Abdullah's visit. 'The chief minister came and saw what had happened, but nobody gave us any reassurances,' Jatinder Kumar said.
Amit, another resident in the area whose house had been damaged, said the residents had been anxious ever since Pakistan had begun firing at targets in India. On Saturday, he said, it 'felt as if an earthquake had happened. It was a very loud bang, and everything was moving.'
Shweta, another resident, was also woken up by the impact of debris falling on her house. She said some of the relatives had been injured in the incident. Like others in the neighborhood, she was upset with the government for failing to respond to the people's needs.
'Where will we evacuate to?' she asked. 'Nowhere is safe. ... we spend our whole lives building our properties. You want us to leave and run. It can't happen. This government has not given us as much as it has taken away from us now.'

Modi inaugurates Delhi stretch of Dwarka Expressway, UER-II; vows ‘model Capital'

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) (PMO) 'Our government has worked on this at multiple levels. In the past 11 years, travel has become easier in Delhi NCR,' Modi said while addressing the gathering, which was also attended by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Delhi chief minister (CM) Rekha Gupta, and Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini. In his 20-minute speech, PM Modi touched on a wide range of issues including a self-reliant and secure India, impending GST reforms, and reiterating his 'vocal for local' pitch. Referring to his Independence Day speech from Red Fort, Modi said that Delhi will be turned into a development model for the rest of the world. 'Friends, when the world looks at India, it first looks at our capital, our Delhi. That is why we have to make Delhi a model of development, where everyone feels that yes, this is the developed capital of India,' he said. He added that while Delhi already has one of the world's largest metro networks, it also boasts a modern rapid rail system like Namo Bharat connecting it to other nearby states. The UER project, he said, is helping Delhi get rid of legacy waste from garbage mounds. 'To make Urban Extension Road, lakhs of tonnes of waste have been put to work by reducing the mountains of waste, and it has been done scientifically,' Modi said, adding that the government is working to alleviate the problems of residents near the Bhalswa landfill. Praising the Rekha Gupta-led government, he said, 'I was told that in such a short time, 16 lakh metric tons of waste have been removed from the Yamuna. Not only that, in a very short time, 650 Devi Electric Buses have been started in Delhi.' He added that the number of electric buses in Delhi will soon cross 2,000, calling them the 'key to a clean and green Delhi.' Attacking the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) governments, Modi said Delhi was thrown into neglect, but the new government under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will address the residents' long-standing problems. 'You must remember, a few months ago, the people of Delhi and Haryana were told that the people of Haryana are the biggest enemies of Delhi. The people of Haryana are mixing poison in the water of Delhi,' Modi said. 'Delhi and the whole of NCR have been freed from that kind of politics, and governance is the identity of the BJP governments. For the BJP governments, the people are above all. You are our high command,' he added. Modi said that while the Haryana government under Saini has 'given government jobs to millions of people with complete transparency,' slum residents of Delhi are getting permanent homes, and electricity, water, and gas connections are being provided by the Gupta-led government. He said that a record has been set in the country in the past 11 years, not just in Delhi-NCR. 'New railway stations are being built. Modern trains like Vande Bharat are being built. Airports are being constructed in small cities.' 'The kind of infrastructure the country needed, the speed at which it needed to grow, that did not happen in the past,' he said, alleging that the budget for infrastructure was much lower under previous governments. 'The projects that were supposed to be sanctioned were not completed for years. In the last 11 years, we have increased the budget for infrastructure by six times. Now, there is a rush to complete the projects quickly,' Modi said. Touching on his Independence Day promise, Modi mentioned major reforms under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime. 'This Diwali, with the GST reforms, the country's citizens are going to get double bonuses. Every family will benefit from this. The poor and middle class will benefit,' he reiterated. PM Modi said that khadi had once reached the stage of extinction, but 'in one decade, the sale of Khadi increased by seven times.' He added that people adopted khadi with the 'vocal for local' mantra. He urged Indians to buy goods made in India and shopkeepers to stock India-made products. 'With your one step, the country will benefit, your family and your children will also benefit. With everything that you sell, workers of the country will benefit and your money will remain in India,' he added.

‘Saam, daam, dand, bhed': After land pooling, another self-goal by AAP in Punjab, thanks to Manish Sisodia

The land pooling policy flames were yet to be doused, and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab is now firefighting another crisis. In an apparent self-goal ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, AAP's Punjab affairs incharge Manish Sisodia's recent 'saam daam dand bhed' remark has kicked off a political storm in Punjab, with the Opposition demanding registration of a police case against the former Delhi deputy chief minister and approaching the Election Commission (EC) with a complaint. The fresh crisis for the ruling party comes close on the heels of the controversial land pooling policy proposed by the AAP government, which it was forced to withdraw after massive backlash from the farmers, state-wide protests and a rap from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The policy aimed at developing urban infrastructure projects and townships by acquiring acres of fertile land from farmers. What has kicked off the latest crisis for the AAP are Sisodia's recent remarks at the party's women's wing leadership programme held in Mohali on August 13, attended by AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Addressing the party's women workers, Sisodia, in his speech, which was broadcast live on the party's YouTube channel, said: '…We have chalked out a detailed week-by-week plan of how our women workers will fan out across villages and streets of Punjab. Within one month, we plan to train every woman worker of the party in Punjab.' Further implying that the AAP will do whatever it may take to win the 2027 elections in Punjab, Sisodia further said in his address that the party workers can also adopt 'saam, daam, dand, bhed' and 'ladaai jhagda'. He said: '2027 ka chunaav jitvaane ke liye, saam, daam, dand, bhed, sach, jhooth, question, answer, laraai, jhagda jo karna padega karenge.. taiyyar hain josh ke saath? (To win the 2027 elections, we will do whatever it may take- saam, daam, dand, bhed, truth, lies, question-answer, fight, etc. Are you ready?)' The phrase 'saam, daam, dand, bhed' from the ancient Indian philosophy refers to the usage of a combination of tactics – persuasion and conciliation (saam), money, gifts to influence someone (daam), force or punishment to control others (dand) and creating division or exploiting weaknesses (bhed)- to achieve a goal in politics and diplomacy. The phrase is most widely attributed to ancient Indian philosopher Chanakya, the chief advisor to King Chandragupta Maurya. Chanakya had assisted the King in establishing the Mauryan Empire. The phrase, however, is also found in other ancient Indian philosophical texts. Demanding immediate action and registration of a criminal case against the AAP for 'violating law of the land', BJP Punjab president Sunil Jakhar shot off a complaint to the Election Commission of India (ECI), stating that Sisodia's remarks 'promote undemocratic methods and violate Indian law'. 'These remarks mock the value of peace, freedom and integrity and clearly indicate the AAP's intention to undermine democratic process. 'Saam' refers to misuse of government machinery, 'daam' indicates usage of money and bribery, 'dand' warns of punishment against those who refuse to support AAP and 'bhed' to a dangerous plan to create communal and caste-based divisions in Punjab. 'Sach and jhooth' refers to use of lies, propaganda and misinformation. 'Ladaai and jhagda' directly promote violence and physical confrontation to silence opponents and create fear,' wrote Jakhar, further suggesting the sections of the Representation of the People Act under which Sisodia should be booked. Kanwar Sandhu, a former AAP MLA who was suspended from the party and a veteran journalist-editor, wrote on X: 'Manish Sisodia should be booked under section 171C of IPC (section 171 BNS) for his utterances- inducing voters to adopt legal or illegal practices to win polls.' Demanding the 'cancellation of Sisodia's bail', Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal also urged the EC to take action against Sisodia for 'inciting fraternal bloodshed'. 'The EC is requested to order registration of a criminal case against Sisodia as the AAP government is not likely to take any action against their Delhi leader as CM Bhagwant Mann was a part of the audience when Sisodia made these incendiary remarks. The EC should also recommend cancellation of the bail granted to Sisodia which is being misused to indulge in corruption by bribing voters.' Sukhbir further urged EC to debar AAP from contesting 2027 Punjab assembly elections in 'view of its open assertion that it would use illegal methods to seek a mandate in its favour'. Calling it a 'confession of intent to destroy democracy', Congress MLA and Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa wrote on X: 'When Sisodia openly declares that they will use 'Saam, Daam, Dand, Bhed, truth, lies & even violence' to win 2027 at any cost, it's not a strategy- it's a confession of intent to destroy democracy. He is admitting what I've said many times- BJP and AAP want to use unfair means. Two sides of the same dirty coin. For 3.5 years, AAP has failed to govern. Now, in desperation, they are ready to destroy Punjab's peace, democracy & law and order.' However, the AAP's women wing president and Moga MLA Dr Amandeep Kaur, who was also in attendance at the Mohali event, said that the Opposition, which has 'no other agenda against the AAP government', was creating a mountain out of a molehill. 'Sisodia's remarks are being presented out of context. That one line has been extracted from his entire speech and made viral. That's because Opposition has nothing else against us. We aren't the Akali Dal or the BJP, which together introduced drugs and gangsters in Punjab. Congress was the architect of the 1984 anti-Sikh genocide, so it should not even speak on something related to violence. The AAP is only cleaning up their 75-year mess. We are working solely for Punjab's peace and prosperity, which is something they cannot digest. Give one instance where the AAP's actions led to any violence in Punjab,' Kaur told The Indian Express.

Punjab BJP chief seeks support for PM Modi's stand on farmers

Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar on Sunday called on all stakeholders to set aside politics and stand united with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national interest for his resolute stand in favour of farmers against US pressure. The BJP state chief said the US, which considers itself the global enforcer, has been continuously pressuring India to allow its agricultural products into Indian markets. To this end, the US has imposed stringent tariff restrictions on India. "However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi understands that allowing US agricultural products into India would devastate Indian farmers, and thus, he has refused to bow to this pressure," he said in a statement here. Jakhar emphasised that at a time when major global powers have succumbed to US demands, Prime Minister Modi has prioritised the interests of Indian farmers and refused to open Indian markets to the US. He appealed to farmers and farmer organisations, stating that this is the time to stand firmly with the Prime Minister in the interest of the nation, so he can fight for farmers' rights with even greater resolve. Jakhar further remarked that parties shedding "crocodile tears" over the Punjab government's land pooling policy did little to pressure the government. It was only the BJP that made every possible effort to protect farmers' land and built public opinion against the policy. Due to the BJP's pressure and the strong opposition from Punjab's people, the government was forced to withdraw this policy. He added that the people of Punjab have now clearly understood who engages in politics in the name of farmers and who truly stands with them in difficult times. Jakhar stressed that this is the time to identify those who exploit farmers' names for political gain while doing nothing substantial for them. In contrast, the BJP took a firm stand against the land pooling policy in Punjab and stood strongly with farmers. At the national level, Prime Minister Modi has taken on the US to protect the interests of the country's farmers. Jakhar urged everyone to seize this opportunity to support the Prime Minister in his efforts.
