‘Eggs-traordinary' boost for Malaysian poultry stocks

The removal of egg subsidies is the latest step in the government's fiscal consolidation efforts.
PETALING JAYA : Poultry stocks saw a boost in their share prices today following the government's announcement it is scrapping price control and subsidies for chicken eggs under its subsidy rationalisation initiative.
Teo Seng Capital Bhd and PWF Corp Bhd spiked as much as 8% each, Lay Hong Bhd rose 6% while CCK Consolidated Holdings Bhd edged up 4%.
However, the news had muted effect on the large-cap poultry companies. QL Resources Bhd ticked up 0.6% while Leong Hup International Bhd rose 0.8%. QL and Leong Hup are valued at RM17.5 billion and RM2.26 billion, respectively.
In contrast, Teo Seng, PWF, Lay Hong and CCK have market capitalisation ranging between RM250 million and RM840 million.
The agriculture and food security ministry announced this morning the government will end price control on eggs effective on May 1 as part of its phased subsidy retargeting. Subsidies on eggs will be halved to five sen from 10 sen per unit, before being fully scrapped on Aug 1, 2025.
The removal of egg subsidies is the latest step in the government's ongoing fiscal consolidation efforts.
'The government has also taken into account that prolonged price control and subsidy is unsustainable for the local egg producing industry as well as the country's fiscal health,' the ministry statement said.
The government initially planned to float egg prices in July 2023 but postponed the move due to concerns about potential price increases and the impact on consumers.
It had spent close to RM2.5 billion between February 2022 and December 2024 for subsidies on eggs to help producers cope with rising costs of soybean and corn following the Covid-19 pandemic and Ukraine-Russia conflict.
To minimise the impact on cost of living, the government will undertake intervention measures including introducing a new grade of reasonably priced eggs and stepping up enforcement to curb profiteering and price manipulation.

Klias hardcore poverty initiative bears fruit

Published on: Friday, June 06, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 06, 2025 By: Iskandar Dzulkifli Text Size: BEAUFORT: The government's efforts to eradicate hardcore poverty in Sabah have borne fruit, with the Klias constituency achieving zero hardcore poverty status. Klias Assemblyman Datuk Isnin Aliasnih said this success was the result of the continuous efforts of the State Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor as part of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) agenda. Advertisement Isnin said E-Kasih data showed there were 168 hardcore poor in Klias in 2023, which decreased to 11 by the end of 2024 and finally reached zero this year. 'This year, it is zero, meaning there are no more hardcore poor in Klias. This shows that the government's various initiatives to address this issue have been effective. 'The government provided extensive assistance to ensure these individuals rose above the poverty line, as we understood their struggles, some earning less than RM250 a month and some even without homes,' 'We provided them with SMJ homes and enrolled them in the Mini Estet Sejahtera (Mesej) programme to boost their economic standing. They have now successfully escaped poverty.' He said this to reporters after officiating the Klias Gagasan Rakyat Annual Delegates Meeting at Dewan Pa' Musa here. Isnin, who is also Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing, said five dilapidated schools in the area will be upgraded with an allocation of RM118 million. The schools are SK Mempagar, SK Takuli, SK Rancangan Klias, SK Pintas and SK Kubu. Additionally, a RM35 million allocation has been approved for the construction of the Beaufort District Education Office. 'My voice was heard during the Gagasan Rakyat Annual Assembly debate last year on education issues, leading to this substantial allocation for Klias. 'Not just that, Beaufort is also set to become one of Sabah's industrial hubs with a 5,000-acre area to be developed as an industrial centre. 'Once this project begins, it will impact local development and the economy, especially in Klias. The community must seize this opportunity,' he said. When asked about preparations for the 17th State Election, Isnin, who is also a Gagasan Rakyat Supreme Council Member said the party machinery is fully prepared to defend the Klias seat at any time. 'All party wings, including grassroots machinery, have been instructed to be ready. 'Support from young voters (aged 18 to 30) for the government is very positive, thanks to various direct initiatives such as education aid, SMJ housing assistance and financial aid all of which meet the people's needs at all levels,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Social media giants must tackle online harms, be held accountable

Fahmi took aim at Facebook, which earned RM2.5 billion in advertising revenue in Malaysia in 2023, for failing to curb scam ads and online gambling promotions. Speaking at the launch of the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia's (CMCF) guidelines on reporting and sharing suicide-related content, Fahmi called on digital platforms to join the CMCF to support ethical content practices and help curb the rising tide of online toxicity. Fahmi said while Malaysia has the legal framework in place, enforcement and platform cooperation remain lacking. - Bernama photo He pointed out that companies earning billions in advertising revenue must take responsibility for the content published and shared on their platforms. 'TikTok has joined the Content Forum and we are grateful for that. But many other platforms are still not on board — especially X,' he said, referring to the platform formerly known as Twitter. Fahmi said while Malaysia has the legal framework in place, enforcement and platform cooperation remain lacking. 'The laws are mostly there. We also have the Online Safety Act coming into effect soon. But are platforms doing enough? I don't think so,' he said. He described X as one of the worst offenders. 'X really puts the 'X' in toxic. It's an extremely toxic environment,' he added. He also criticised Facebook for failing to control scam ads and deepfake content, noting that the platform has become a hotbed for fraudulent schemes that often go unchecked and prey on unsuspecting users. 'For a long time, we didn't look at scams as a form of cyberbullying. But scams, whether AI-generated deepfakes or identity theft used to promote fake products have a serious impact on mental health,' he said. Fahmi also took aim at Facebook, which earned RM2.5 billion in advertising revenue in Malaysia in 2023, for failing to curb scam ads and online gambling promotions. He said that resistance from tech platforms to cooperate with regulators is not just a Malaysian issue but one that affects the entire Asia-Pacific and Asean regions. 'Many of these platforms act as if they're above national laws. This isn't just about regulation. It's about their mindset. 'When it comes to profit, they move quickly. But when it's about following the law, they drag their feet,' he said. More Like This

Developers, private companies in N. Sembilan encouraged to set up recycling centres

SEREMBAN: In line with efforts to protect the environment, all developers and private companies in Negeri Sembilan are encouraged to establish recycling centres in their development areas. Negeri Sembilan Local Government Development, Housing and Transport Action Committee chairman J. Arul Kumar said the move would the move complement the government's initiatives on waste reduction, zero landfill goals, and the advancement of smart and sustainable city development. He said the KITARecycle Drive-Through Centre managed by SWM Environment Sdn Bhd (SWM Environment) serves as the best example, with statistics showing that 2,589 individuals registered and delivered recyclable items at the centre in 2023. 'The number increased sharply to 22,139 individuals last year and as of April this year, the agency has received 4,557 people who have registered,' he told reporters after opening the KITARecycle Matrix Concepts Drive-Through Centre here today. Also present were SWM Environment Corporate General Manager Mohd Norlisam Mohd Nordin and Matrix Concepts Chief Executive Officer Chai Keng Wai. Meanwhile, Arul said, The KITARecycle Drive-Thru Centre, operated by SWM Environment, also recorded the collection of 724 tonnes of recyclable materials last year and over 306 tonnes as of April this year. In addition, it also manages 16 KITARecycle Houses and nine KITARecycle Drop-Off Collection Points, he added. He said the effort to preserve the environment is also supported by 32 Drive-Thru Recycling Centres (DTRCs) in the state operated by the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) through the MADANI Community Well-Being Programme (Sejati MADANI). In a separate development, Arul expressed optimism that the construction of the Seremban Arena Complex, the first of its kind in the state and valued at RM250 million, will add significant value to the socio-economic growth of the local community. He said the project, undertaken by the Lee Tian Hock Yong Chou Lian Foundation, is expected to position Seremban City as a modern and inclusive urban centre. Developed by Karisma Perwira Sdn Bhd, the project will be officially launched on June 28, marking a new milestone in the transformation of Seremban's urban landscape.
