Broncos roster: OLB Andrew Farmer (No. 53) seeking breakthrough

USA Today10-07-2025
Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at third-year outside linebacker Andrew Farmer, No. 53.
Before the Broncos: Farmer (6-3, 252 pounds) played collegiate football at Lane College, an HBCU (Historically Black College or University) in Jackson, Tennessee. After totaling 114 tackles and 17.5 sacks in his final two seasons with the Dragons, Farmer signed with the USFL's Michigan Panthers before ultimately changing his mind, deciding to join the Los Angeles Chargers for the 2023 season.
In 2023, Farmer played in eight games, making three total tackles (two solo, one assisted). Farmer began the 2024 season on the Chargers' practice squad before being released by Los Angeles in early September. The Denver Broncos quickly signed Farmer to their practice squad later in September.
Broncos tenure: Prior to being signed by the Chargers, the Broncos "spent considerable time" with the linebacker at the 2022 Hula Bowl, so he was not unfamiliar to the team. Farmer spent the rest of the 2024 season on the Broncos' practice squad.
Chances to make the 53-man roster: Likely competing for a practice squad spot. The Broncos know Farmer's value, and he's likely a strong candidate to spend another season on the practice squad. If any injuries should arise to the starting OLB corps, Farmer could be a candidate to be elevated to the active roster in 2025.

Sean Payton on trade talks: 'The easy part is the fielding calls'

It's that time of year. As roster cuts draw closer, NFL teams are making calls about potential trades -- both to bring players in and to ship players out. As the Denver Broncos prepare to make some tough roster decisions, general manager George Paton and coach Sean Payton will receive calls from other clubs about players on the roster bubble. 'I think the easy part is the fielding calls because if they come, then you sit and discuss what call came," Payton said Tuesday. "What happens a lot is the call that comes that's very open-ended. 'What are you guys looking for? What are we looking for?' You know that there's a target in their mind. I like the decisions we have to make, be it they're tough ones. The process is still ongoing.' After facing the New Orleans Saints in their preseason finale on Saturday, the Broncos will have until Aug. 26 to set an initial 53-man roster. We will track all of Denver's cuts -- and any potential trades -- on Broncos Wire. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Did you know: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.

Broncos OLB Nik Bonitto provides update after foot procedure

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Nik Bonitto (foot) returned to practice this week after sitting out last week. The 25-year-old pass rusher recently had a bone spur removed on the top of his foot, and he's now working to get back up to full speed ahead of the regular season. "It was kind of just a thing that showed up in the 49ers practice," Bonitto said Tuesday. "And ever since then, it was kind of bothering me, bothering me. I was trying to fight through it through the game. I finished, then it felt like -- I told the trainers -- if I kept playing, I don't think I could have like really kept going on it. "So it was something where we could either keep trying to fight throughout the season or have the procedure done and not worry about it. So I felt like, with the trainers -- what they told me -- and what Coach told me, they were like, '[You] should get it done,' so I have full trust in them, and that's what we ended up doing." Bonitto dominated in San Francisco despite playing through the bone spur. After having the procedure, he won't have to nurse his foot during the season, and he's expected to be fully recovered in time for Week 1. Bonitto was named a second-team All-Pro last season and he earned his first career Pro Bowl nod after totaling 13.5 sacks and scoring two defensive touchdowns. He aims to take his game to an even higher level in 2025. 'As a defense as a total, we want to have the No. 1 defense," Bonitto said when asked about his goals. "As far as just individual, just to be better than last year. I kind of have taken pride in just getting better every year, finding ways to be better in my game and just help the defense be better.' Bonitto and the Broncos will host the Tennessee Titans in their first game of the regular season on Sept. 7. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Will the Broncos carry 4 running backs on 53-man roster?

NFL teams typically carry three running backs on the active roster, but the Denver Broncos do not have a typical backfield. Denver added veteran J.K. Dobbins during free agency this summer, and he appears poised to serve as the RB1a with second-round draft pick RJ Harvey filling the RB1b role. Tyler Badie seems likely to make the 53-man roster as a favorite of coach Sean Payton, and Jaleel McLaughlin was one of the team's most productive RBs in 2024. So, will the Broncos carry four running backs on the active roster in 2025? 'We talk about the third quarterback, the fourth tailback," Payton said last week. "We talk about do you get to the game with six receivers? There are all these, and special teams factor in quite a bit. So there's the, let's say, the standard depth and then the exceptions. Because ultimately I've said this, the right 53 is so important. So that doesn't mean we have to constantly follow the model of what we've always done. If the fourth tailback is better… So we do go through all of that, and George [Paton] and I -- in fact, yesterday went through the next 10-day schedule, 12 days, 13 days we're at the cutdown. Then we're signing practice squad players. It's all part of the equation. "I would say every year's a little different. It's just a little different than any year before. It's just a little different. It might be because of one guy who plays special teams. Every year is just a little different. I was taught at a young age, the most significant thing is the right 53, so that's what keeps you up at night, making sure we're finding that group.' Payton didn't directly answer whether or not Denver will carry four RBs, but he did note that some positions are deeper than others, and the team doesn't follow an exact model every year. So if it makes more sense to carry four RBs this year and cut a player at a different position, the Broncos will do it. If Dobbins, Harvey, Badie and McLaughlin are Payton's preferred four, that would leave Audric Estime and Blake Watson looking for jobs after roster cuts next week. We don't know how things will shake out, though, so all we can do is guess at this point. Stay tuned. Denver has until Aug. 26 to set an initial 53-man roster.
