Two Southwest flight attendants injured after jet moved to avoid another aircraft
Southwest Flight 1496 sharply descended nearly 500 feet, according to flight tracking websites.
The airline and the Federal Aviation Administration said pilots took action after receiving alerts of a potential collision. The Southwest Boeing 737 continued on to Las Vegas, where it landed uneventfully.
The FAA is investigating.
No passengers were injured, but a passenger identified as Caitlin Burdi told Fox News Digital the sharp descent stirred panic onboard.
"We really thought we were plummeting to a plane crash," she was quoted as saying.
According to a statement from Southwest, the incident began when its crew responded to "two onboard traffic alerts" while taking off from Burbank, "requiring them to climb and descend to comply with the alerts."
The incident came a week after a SkyWest Airlines jet operating as a Delta Connection flight from Minneapolis reported taking evasive action to avoid a possible collision with a U.S. Air Force bomber during a landing approach over North Dakota.
The FAA said on Monday it was investigating last Friday's near-miss incident involving SkyWest Flight 3788, an Embraer EMBR3.SA ERJ-175 regional jet, which landed safely at Minot, North Dakota.
The Air Force confirmed a B-52 aircraft assigned to Minot Air Force Base had conducted a flyover of the North Dakota State Fair last Friday and that military investigators were looking into the matter.

Smollett has seldom worked in film or television since the fallout over the alleged hate crime incident: He directed two independent films, 'B-Boy Blues' (2021) and 'The Lost Holliday' (2024), which were backed by his own production company but were not widely seen. Smollett, who rose to fame starring on 'Empire' between 2015 and 2020, claimed in January 2019 he was the victim of a hate crime and told police two men physically attacked him, poured an unknown liquid on him and called him racial and homophobic slurs. Smollett quickly garnered an outpouring of support from politicians and fellow celebrities, but following a police investigation, Smollett was charged in February 2019 with disorderly conduct and filing a false police report. Charges were dropped the next month in exchange for Smollett completing community service. But in 2020, following another investigation, a special prosecutor charged Smollett again for disorderly conduct and filing a false police report. He faced trial and was found guilty on five of six counts, and in 2022, he was sentenced to 150 days in jail and fined. Smollett served six days in jail and was released after his lawyers filed an appeal, arguing he shouldn't have been charged again after the initial charges were dropped. In November, the Illinois Supreme Court overturned Smollett's conviction. One dead, one injured in plane crash near Maplewood Park in Rochester
One man is dead and another was injured after a small, single-engine plane crashed onto Bridge View Drive near Maplewood Park in Rochester around 1:30 p.m. Aug. 1, according to Rochester police. One man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second occupant was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency crews from Rochester Police and Fire Departments, the Airport Fire Department, and AMR Ambulance responded to the crash. Bridge View Drive remains closed as the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) investigate. No timeline has been given for when the road will reopen. Fighter jets scrambled, flares fired after planes violate Trump airspace over Bedminster, New Jersey
Fighter jets were scrambled to intercept a civilian plane Sunday after it entered restricted airspace over President Trump's property in Bedminster, New Jersey, the North American Aerospace Defense Command said, one of seven aircraft to violate the airspace over the weekend. Three civilian planes flew in the restricted airspace Saturday, and there were four more violations on Sunday, including one that was intercepted by fighter aircraft, NORAD said in a statement. Flares were deployed to get the pilot's attention, NORAD said on social media, and the plane was safely escorted out of the area by NORAD aircraft. "The flares – which may have been visible to the public – are employed with the highest regard for the safety of the intercepted aircraft and people on the ground," NORAD said in a separate statement. "Flares burn out quickly and completely and there is no danger to the people on the ground when dispensed." According to the president's schedule, Mr. Trump was at Bedminster on Sunday and scheduled to leave Sunday evening for the White House. NORAD, which noted previously that 11 aircraft violated the same airspace over July 4 weekend, urged pilots to pay attention to Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) issued by the FAA. "Ignorance is not a defense," NORAD warned before the weekend when announcing the airspace restrictions. The command routinely issues temporary flight restriction (TFR) zones for Mr. Trump's Bedminster retreat as well as his property at Mar-a-Lago in West Palm Beach, Florida. Air Force fighter jets have also intercepted civilian aircraft flying in the temporarily restricted airspace over Mr. Trump's Florida home this year, after the president took office on Jan. 20.
