
Malaysian trucker donates rare Rh-negative blood for 33 years
Shanmugam discovered his blood type's rarity after a 1991 accident delayed his surgery due to a lack of matching donors. 'From there, I realised I needed to become a donor out of responsibility,' he said after receiving an award at Slim River Hospital during Perak's World Blood Donor Day celebration.
Living in Teluk Intan, Shanmugam donates four times yearly, as Rh-negative blood makes up less than 10% of Malaysia's blood supply. State Health Committee chairman A. Sivanesan presented awards to top donors, including legal consultant Beh Zeng Kang, 29, who has donated 51 times since age 17.
Beh, with the common O blood type, said donating is a routine. 'As long as I'm healthy, I'll keep helping those in need,' he said. Sivanesan noted Perak collected 64,416 blood bags last year, with Chinese donors leading at 48.32%, followed by Malays (39.12%) and Indians (11.40%).
The state estimates needing 80,000 blood bags annually. Special certificates were given to 36 donors and 15 campaign organisers for their contributions.

University denies delayed emergency response in death of China student
KUALA LUMPUR: The private university in Sepang where a student was found dead in his dormitory room is denying allegations that there was a delay in the emergency response time. A spokesperson for the private university said while the student's symptoms resembled a heart attack, the actual medical condition required specific treatment beyond standard emergency equipment designed for cardiac issues, Sin Chew Daily reported, quoting a statement from the Xiamen University. According to the police, results of the post mortem determined the cause of death to be pulmonary thromboembolism due to right deep vein thrombosis. The student, idetified as a 20-year-old male from China, was found dead in his dormitory yesterday morning. "His condition required specialised medical intervention and equipment," the university said. "The critical window for rescue was very short and exceeded the scope of typical emergency response tools usually used for heart-related episodes," the spokesperson said. The university said it had immediately activated their emergency response protocol when the incident occurred. "This included an on-site certified first responder administering CPR, quick contact with emergency medical services and immediate assistance from dormitory staff and campus security," the university said. "The university also set up an emergency response task force and contacted forensic experts as per police instructions. Psychological support teams were deployed to assist the affected students and the student's family," the spokesperson said. The university said it is now fully assisting the family in handling the aftermath and is closely cooperating with Malaysian authorities, hospitals, and the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia to provide support to the family members. Earlier, Sepang police chief Assistant Commissioner Norhizam Bahaman confirmed the incident was classified as sudden death (SDR) as investigations found no criminal elements or foul play.

ACCRA, July 25 (Xinhua) -- The 14th Chinese medical team and Ghanaian doctors have successfully carried out the first laparoscopic transabdominal anterior hernia repair within the West African country's public hospital system. The surgery was performed Wednesday at the Lekma Hospital in the Ghanaian capital of Accra, led by Yang Yongguang, chief of the Chinese medical team, and Mahamadu Zakariah, chief of the surgery department of the hospital. "Sometime in February this year, I developed a health issue with pains in my abdomen. In a recovery ward, he told Xinhua that a Chinese friend introduced him to the Chinese medical team at Lekma Hospital. "I came here on Tuesday and was taken through the surgery on Wednesday. At first, I was scared, but I am feeling better now. The doctor did a wonderful job. And now I'm picking up and don't feel the pain I used to have when the hernia started anymore. I hope to recover fully soon," he added. Yang described the surgery as "a breakthrough, from zero to one." "We hope to apply minimally invasive techniques to more procedures in the future to serve the people of Ghana," he said.
