How a Former Apple Engineer Is Reinventing Expense Management

After recognizing these inefficiencies, serial entrepreneur and technologist Rushil Nagarsheth decided to develop an alternative. Rushil's passion for engineering started during his childhood in Dubai, when he built his first functional robot: a basic line-following machine. "It wasn't fancy, but it sparked something in me,"he recalls.
This early experience ignited a fascination with how physics, electronics, and software could work together to bring ideas to life, and he went on to guide his school's 'F1 in Schools' team from underdogs to national competitors.
In 2017, Rushil moved to Canada to attend the University of Waterloo, which is well-known for its engineering program, innovation, and a strong startup culture. Within his first year, he helped build a light-sensitive robot that played music autonomously and won a campus-wide engineering competition.
While still an undergrad, he was exposed to elite engineering environments through internships at Blackberry Messenger and Apple's Siri WatchOS and VisionPro team, where he worked on complex audio libraries and gained valuable experience with the intricacies of audio engineering and signal processing.
When the pandemic hit in 2020, Rushil was working remotely in the Siri Vision Pro team. Amidst lockdowns and growing isolation, he noticed a different epidemic spreading—loneliness. Traditional text-based communication tools felt cold and impersonal for a time that desperately needed real connection. "The world had changed, but the tools we used to support us did not," says Rushil.
With the aim of making communication faster, more human, and less reliant on walls of text, Rushil and his founding team built Rant, a messaging app where people could send ephemeral voice notes across social groups. Rushil spent his days interning and nights coding at Rant with his team, and they managed to build the MVP in just two weeks. He used the skills he learned at Apple to make the platform ultra-lightweight, enabling voice notes to be sent in just milliseconds.
Though Rant gained early traction and pre-seed backing, it ultimately suffered from the brutal realities of scaling—even great products struggle without virality and strong networks— and it eventually shut down.
It was during this time that he met Marc Baghadjian, one of his advisors whose ideas aligned with his own. Together, they joined forces to build another startup called Lolly, a video-first dating app developed during the TikTok boom which sought to replace static and curated dating profiles with short videos that captured who people really were.
The platform amassed over hundreds of thousands of users uploading short-form videos, but retention was a critical market constraint. After attempts to iterate and differentiate, the team opted for a different strategy when larger players began replicating their features. Rushil and Marc alongside Nikolas Ioannou regrouped in 2022 determined that their next move would be deliberate—built for business, not for virality.
While it's common to rush toward the next trend in consumer tech, the latest fads often burn bright but brief. They realized that success shouldn't depend on staying in the spotlight, but be rooted in solving problems that would still matter years from now. To that end, they turned their attention to back-office finance—a critical yet often overlooked part of every company's operations.
Despite the entire world moving toward digitalization and automation, finance operations remained slow, manual, and error-prone, and a desire to fix these issues inspired the creation of Hypercard.
Initially, the team envisioned Hypercard as the first employee-consumer credit card with premium benefits. However, it evolved into something more impactful: the first autonomous back-office intelligence platform for expense management.
Hypercard enables employees to swipe their cards, submit reimbursements in one click, and get approvals instantly. Rushil architected the AI engine that analyzes transaction data in real-time, flags out-of-policy spending, and enforces compliance automatically—eliminating the need for manual processes.
By integrating deeply with several data sources, Hypercard ensures that every expense is validated against company policies, employee roles, and organizational budgets, removing the administrative burden to deliver a seamless expense management experience that saves time, improves cash flow visibility, and strengthens compliance without slowing down operations.
Hypercard quickly attracted top-tier investors, including Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI), Gene Lockhart (former CEO of Mastercard), and Marc Randolph (co-founder of Netflix). It was recognized as one of the most promising fintech startups in 2024, highlighting its potential to reshape the future of enterprise finance through real-time intelligence and automation. The Pivot to B2B: Applying Consumer-Grade Experience to Enterprise Tools
Rushil's years working in consumer tech have given him an intimate understanding of the power of user-centered design, instant feedback loops, and emotional resonance, while the collapse of Lolly and Rant showed him that even brilliant consumer apps can fail without the right growth mechanics.
"I've had a lot of hands-on experience building products – starting with consumer apps and now shifting into B2B," he reflects. "That journey has taught me a lot about user experience, fast iteration, and finding product-market fit the hard way."
Those insights now shape how Hypercard operates. Instead of building superficial features, it is engineered for simplicity, speed, and real human needs. During Apple's annual WWDC 2025 conference live stream Monday, the company took some time to outline the next phase of Apple Intelligence, adding real-time translation, expanded visual recognition tools, and on-device AI for developers. The tools work across the entire ecosystem, said Apple, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro, and will launch with the fall software updates. This is a shift from Apple talking about consumer-facing AI features to really focus in on deeper, system-level integration. Apple Intelligence will power Live Translate in calls and messages, identify (and interact with) content on screen, and push further into Image Playground and Genmoji apps. For developers, Apple will let them access its foundational on-device models, making it easier to provide private, AI-enhanced experiences across apps without having to send data to the cloud. This echoes Apple's long-standing stance on privacy and hardware, which contrasts with more cloud-based AI providers like Open AI and Google. "Last year, we took the first steps on a journey to bring users intelligence that's helpful, relevant, easy to use, and right where users need it, all while protecting their privacy. Now, the models that power Apple Intelligence are becoming more capable and efficient, and we're integrating features in even more places across each of our operating systems," said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, during the keynote. "We're also taking the huge step of giving developers direct access to the on-device foundation model powering Apple Intelligence, allowing them to tap into intelligence that is powerful, fast, built with privacy, and available even when users are offline. We think this will ignite a whole new wave of intelligent experiences in the apps users rely on every day. We can't wait to see what developers create." On Device Live Translation A new Apple Intelligence feature enables real-time translation in Messages, letting users chat across languages without leaving the app. Apple promises that Apple Intelligence will come to eight mor languages by the end of the year, too, including Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese (Portugal), Swedish, Turkish, Chinese (traditional), and Vietnamese. This will no doubt help the Live Translation feature, which will be integrated into Messages, FaceTime, and Phone apps, enabled by Apple's models that run on device as well. Your conversations are yours, promises the company, and even it cannot read them. Messages will translate your text on the fly, letting you communicate with speakers of otehr languages in real. time. IN Facetime, there'll be translated live captions to read along with what your conversation partner is saying, while the Phone app will turn those captions into audio translations during the whole conversation. Genmoji and Image Playground Updates Image Playground, powered by Apple Intelligence, lets users generate styled visuals on-device—including oil painting effects—using prompts and preset suggestions. If you're into messing around with AI image generation, Genmoji and Image Playground improvements should be right up your alley. In addition to creating your own Genmojis with text descriptions, now you can mix emoji together and combine them with descriptions. You'll also be able to change expressions and things like hairstyles in Image Playground and Genmoji when you base your creations on your family and friends. Image Playground gets more ChatGPT integrations, letting you create images with new styles like oil painting or vector art with a tap or a text description. This of course is not processed on-device; Apple will send the images and descriptions to ChatGPT, which will then return the image to you. You'll have to opt in for that to happen, as well. Visual Intelligence Sees your Screen Finally, you can have Apple Intelligence interact with the things you see on your screen. This new feature will let you take a screenshot and ask ChatGPT questions about what you're seeing on the screen. In true corporate style, the demo showed someone taking a screenshot of a jacket that they then asked to buy, and highlighting a lamp they also wanted to buy. Whether this function will do more than find you places to buy things is yet to be seen. One interesting use case, though, is the ability to take a screenshot of an event poster and have Visual Intelligence add it to your calendar. That sounds pretty great, to be honest. Workout Buddy Brings Apple Intelligence to Apple Watch A user runs down a flight of outdoor stairs, tracking fitness progress with Apple Watch's Move ring feature and Workout Buddy. Fitness fan? Workout Buddy on Apple Watch will take your fitness and workout data and generate "personalized, motivational insights" during your session. Apple wrote: "To offer meaningful inspiration in real time, Workout Buddy analyzes data from a user's current workout along with their fitness history, based on data like heart rate, pace, distance, Activity rings, personal fitness milestones, and more. A new text-to-speech model then translates insights into a dynamic generative voice built using voice data from Fitness+ trainers, so it has the right energy, style, and tone for a workout. Workout Buddy processes this data privately and securely with Apple Intelligence." Workout Buddy needs an Apple Watch, Bluetooth headphones, and an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone nearby. Apple Intelligence Drives a Smarter macOS iPhone 16 Dominates Global Sales in Q1 2025 as Apple One of the flagship features of macOS 26 is Apple Intelligence, the iPhone maker's own technology based on AI. The Shortcuts app is receiving a big upgrade, as users will now be able to create actions from Apple Intelligence models. The idea here is to further automate macOS, making it more intuitive, particularly for regular users. According to MacRumors, Siri is smartening up, too, although Apple may wait until it's ready for prime time before giving it the full show. Custom Siri features such as knowing personal context across emails, photos, and apps will begin with macOS 26 or later during the year. Finally, Apple is also hinting at integrating Gemini capabilities with ChatGPT, promising to bring users more choice and capability when using virtual assistants. Streamlined macOS Aesthetic Based on visionOS macOS 26 will be an extension of Apple's overall thrust in harmonizing the design language across all its platforms. Taking cues from visionOS aesthetics, anticipate the interface to look more translucent, rounded, and with a frosted glass-like appearance that makes the desktop look more contemporary. These visual refreshes won't be merely skin-deep. Apple will likely debut streamlined menus, floating UI elements, and overhauled app icons, all designed to provide an even more integrated user experience between macOS and iOS. Third-party devs will also get new design guidelines to help them bring third-party apps in line with Apple's refreshed UI vision, creating uniformity throughout the platform. All-New Game App Replaces Game Center Mac gaming is receiving a major overhaul in the form of a standalone game app that will launch on macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and tvOS. The app will combine games from Apple Arcade and the App Store, as well as introduce features such as leaderboards, in-game achievements, and social features. Most importantly, the macOS edition of the app will enable third-party games installed from outside the Mac App Store, a major plus for gamers who value flexibility. Replacing Game Center, the new app puts Apple more formally in the gaming game. Naming Shift: macOS 26 'Tahoe' Brings New System To simplify its software landscape, Apple is abandoning sequential version numbers in favor of calendar-based naming conventions. Expressing his dismay at Apple CEO Tim Cook's plan to shift some of the iPhone production operations to India, US President Donald Trump categorically emphasised that he 'doesn't want this to happen'. The main Apple iPhone production is in China and there's a good reason for this as the tech giant mass produces its popular iOS models in the Asian country because of workers' manufacturing expertise, the supply chain infrastructure's efficiency, and cheaper labour costs. However, Tim Cook is now considering other countries because of the massive tariffs imposed by the Trump administration in China. According to Mashable SE Asia, Apple is planning to shift some of its iPhone manufacturing operations to India. People familiar with the matter even claimed that the initiative is already underway. Trump disappointed after learning about Tim Cook's plan. 'I had a little problem with Tim Cook,' said the American leader via CNBC. "I said to him, 'My friend, I treated you very good. You're coming here with $500 billion, but now I hear you're building all over India,'" added Trump. With US. tariffs remaining high, it seems like Trump doesn't give Tim Cook any other choice but to rely on India as an alternative. So what does POTUS want? Donald Trump said that he wants Apple to focus its iPhone production in the U.S. During the conference, he said that they treated Tim Cook and his giant firm really well. Trump added that they didn't interfere with Apple building manufacturing plants in China. The US president argued that the administration is not interested in India since it can take care of itself. Donald Trump also argued that India is one of the nations with the highest tariffs. He further stated that India is even willing to remove all tariffs on American products. In April, the White House's trade protectionist policies revealed that the Trump administration has imposed a 26% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods. But, this was temporarily lowered until July. Instead, POTUS wants Tim Cook to start manufacturing in the U.S. Apple has been designing its iPhones and other products in the U.S. However, the actual assemblies of its devices are outsourced to various manufacturers in China and other countries.
