In November 2024, more than 40 firearms were confiscated from Mkhize's mansion during a raid by the Hawks, police and SA Revenue Service.
Matlala was implicated in damning allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi against senior law enforcement officials, accusing them of interfering in cases police are investigating.
Mkhwanazi said WhatsApp messages found on Matlala's phone allegedly link police minister Senzo Mchunu to communications through an associate, Brown Mogotsi.
Matlala was arrested on May 14 on three counts of attempted murder. His company was awarded a R360m contract by the SA Police Service in 2024.

Fast-tracking Cornubia housing for flood victims
The building of 113 houses in Cornubia, Durban, allocated for the victims of the 2022 and 2025 floods, will reach completion over the next four months. Premier Thamasanqa Ntuli made this commitment on behalf of the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Provincial Government yesterday (14 August) during a site visit to the Cornubia Housing Development. The Cornubia Housing Development is part of a broader plan by the KZN provincial department to build 1200 houses by 2027 for families who were displaced following the 2022 and 2025 floods in Durban. Presently, displaced families reside in community halls and temporary residential units. 'The construction of these 113 houses within four months is a promise in action. By 2027, we want every flood victim in KwaZulu-Natal to live in a safe, permanent home,' said Ntuli. The province announced the allocation of R149 million for a further 692 houses that form part of this development. 'The 692 houses are scheduled for completion by December 2026, with beneficiaries expected to move in from December 2026 to January 2027,' said Ntuli. The Premier indicated social facilitation programmes would be initiated by the province together with local municipalities to engage with communities resistant to such developments in their midst. Beneficiaries of houses under government housing projects were warned not to resell or rent out their homes to non-beneficiaries. Ntuli said such actions are unlawful and anybody committing such offences will be prosecuted. 'The Department of Human Settlements, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, will take strict legal action against offenders to protect the integrity of the resettlement programme and ensure that the rightful beneficiaries are accommodated,' said Ntuli. The Cornubia Housing Development is regarded as 'the most ambitious' post-disaster recovery initiatives in KwaZulu-Natal's history. The 2022 group of displaced flood victims were reported to have accused the government of not fulfilling their housing promises, in recent years. Ramaphosa distances himself from Iran trip by SANDF chief
President Cyril Ramaphosa has distanced himself from South African National Defence Force (SANDF) chief General Rudzani Maphwanya's visit to Iran, stating he neither knew of nor authorised the trip. During the visit, Maphwanya reportedly endorsed Iran's stance on Gaza and called for closer ties, remarks that have drawn strong criticism. At a media briefing on Thursday, presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya confirmed that Ramaphosa had not sanctioned the visit and expressed concern over Maphwanya's reported statements in Tehran. 'Neither did he sanction that visit,' Magwenya said. 'The general's administrative process for travel approval starts and ends with the minister. While the President is the appointing authority and the commander-in-chief, he does not supervise the general's travel.' In Tehran, Maphwanya pledged 'common goals' with Iran, backed its Gaza position, and called for deeper strategic alignment, exceeding his constitutional and professional mandate. Magwenya criticised the comments as troubling and poorly timed. 'Yes, there is concern. At this period of heightened geopolitical tensions and conflict in the Middle East, one can say the visit was ill-advised,' he said. He stressed that the general should have been more cautious, especially on matters of foreign policy an area strictly reserved for the President and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO). Magwenya highlighted that South Africa is currently working to restore its diplomatic and trade relationship with the United States. 'We are managing a delicate process of resetting political and diplomatic relations with the US and balancing trade relations in a mutually beneficial way,' he said. 'It is not helpful when senior government or military officials make visits and statements that could inflame tensions. In managing the US relationship, we are also countering significant disinformation from Washington and some local quarters. The government must speak with one voice.' Magwenya confirmed that Maphwanya has returned to South Africa and will meet with Ramaphosa to discuss the matter. He explained that while the SANDF may engage foreign military counterparts under bilateral and multilateral agreements such as joint training, peacekeeping, and disaster response, these engagements must remain strictly military. 'Senior military officers do not engage outside of their military purview,' Magwenya said. Murder suspect arrested after high-speed chase ends in collision near mall in Alexandra A 39-year-old suspect, wanted in connection with a November 2024 murder in Florida, Gauteng, was arrested yesterday after a high-speed police chase ended in a multi-vehicle collision at the London Road off-ramp near Alex Mall, injuring four people and disrupting traffic in the area. Alex News reports that the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) revealed that that the suspect is also linked to nine additional cases, including eight robberies and a murder, in various Johannesburg suburbs. According to the Hawks, the suspect fled when they attempted to stop his vehicle while executing a bench warrant – an arrest warrant issued by the court for failing to appear as required for the November 2024 murder. 'When they tried to pull the vehicle over, the suspect's vehicle accelerated. A high-speed chase ensued,' the Hawks' statement read. The suspect was pursued by a multi-disciplinary law enforcement team comprising of the Hawks' Gauteng Serious Organised Crime Investigation's tracing team and SAPS Counter Intelligence, among others. 'At the intersection of the London Road off-ramp, the suspect's VW Polo collided with a Mazda, as well as Hyundai bakkie.' The Hawks further shared that the suspect's passenger is also a person of interest. However, the statement did not divulge any information about the passenger's connection to any crime or investigation. The collision prompted the closure of London Road, from Alex Mall towards the N3, with law enforcement officials managing the scene. A subsequent search of the suspect's residence, by other law enforcement officials, led to the recovery of an unlicensed 9mm firearm and two vehicles, a blue VW and a blue Renault, linked to cases in Germiston and Sandton.
