The Last Big Winery in San Francisco Closes
Winery August West Wines is closing, the final large production space for wineries to crush grapes in the city. August West Wines's labels include August West, Sandler, and Mansfield-Dunne. While the Bayview's small-batch Gratta Wines remains standing, the San Francisco Chronicle reports Ed Kurtzman's operation was the final commercial winery in mainland San Francisco. Other wineries using the space to custom-crush their products helped keep the space open, Kurtzman told the paper.
That roster shrunk from 29 to nine in recent years, though. Those nine — Theopolis, 1211, Seamus, Perfusion, Grand Scheme, DeMeo, Arthur, Hersly and Fallon Place — will have to relocate. The paper details the various booms of winemaking in San Francisco, including the 1890s when 100 'wine houses' operated in the Paris of the West. Now, it'll be one. Kurtzman will keep making August West and Sandler elsewhere; a final closure date was not provided.
Swanky restaurant expands in Ferry Building
One of Northern California's go-to upscale Italian restaurants will take over the former MarketBar Cafe space on the waterfront. The team behind A16, which now boasts three locations plus La Pala inside the Ferry Building, will open Lucania in 2026. The San Francisco Standard reports owner Shelley Lindgren sees this new Southern Italian-inspired restaurant as part of San Francisco's downtown recovery. The large, 140-seat space including patio will serve classic Italian fare and stay open until 10 p.m.
Supreme SF bar wins big
The Mission District's Trick Dog has earned yet another accolade. The inventive cocktail haven was named Best U.S. Cocktail Bar at Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards in New Orleans. The Spirited Awards is a high watermark in the beverage industry, a kind of Michelin Guide or James Beard Award. Per a press release, this win follows Trick Dog winning World's Best Cocktail Menu twice from the awards in the past.
Bartender takes over classic spot
Ken Turner's sandwich shop Turner's Kitchen will close for good any day now. The location will stay in the 17th Street milieu, though. Corey's Pizza will open in the space, per a farewell Instagram post from Turner. The new outfit comes from 500 Club's Corey Rogers. Winding down, Turner's Kitchen is offloading swag and gear from the business with proceeds going to charity; contact through Instagram

Bipartisan senators push back on new Instagram map feature over privacy concerns
Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) on Friday urged Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to end its new map feature on Instagram. In a letter, first obtained by NBC News, the bipartisan lawmakers argued that the new tool, which shares Instagram users' last active location with followers, could endanger children. 'For years, we have sounded the alarm regarding real time location sharing on social media platforms — specifically when it comes to underage users — and we again urge you to protect children's safety instead of potentially exposing their location to dangerous individuals online, including pedophiles and traffickers,' the senators wrote. The Hill has reached out to Meta for comment. Users must opt in to use the tool and can opt out at any time, according to an Aug. 6 release from Meta. They can also select which followers can see their locations. Parents that have supervision over their child's account can also control the location settings and will receive a notification if the child changes it. But the congressional duo on Friday cited examples of some consumers reporting that their location was shared without consent. 'This addition is a cause of particular concern for us when it comes to children and teens that are active on Instagram,' the senators added. Instagram head Adam Mosseri on Thursday said that the company is working to issue design improvements 'as quickly as possible.' Both Blackburn and Blumenthal have long expressed concerns over child safety on Meta social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. In April, the senators wrote a letter to the company warning that 'the company is failing to protect underage users from sexually explicit discussions with a new class of AI-powered digital chatbots.' Blackburn and Blumenthal also sponsored the Kids Online Safety Act last year, which passed the Senate last summer. It did not pass the House, and they reintroduced the legislation in May. 'We urge you to immediately abandon Instagram's map feature and instead institute meaningful protections for children online —they deserve nothing less,' the senators wrote in the Friday letter.

How to Turn Instagram Likes into Real Engagement
Getting Instagram Likes feels great—it's a quick sign that people appreciate your content. But likes alone won't grow your brand or business. The real goal is to turn those likes into meaningful engagement—comments, shares, saves, profile visits, and, ultimately, loyal followers who take action. Instagram Likes are a sign that your post caught someone's attention, but they're a surface-level interaction. Real engagement goes deeper—it means your audience is connecting with your content, your brand, and your message. Encourage your audience to take the next step beyond liking your post: Ask a question in your caption Invite followers to share their opinion Encourage them to tag a friend who might enjoy the content Example: 'Double-tap if you agree, but comment below to tell us why!' To turn Instagram Likes into conversations, post: Polls and quizzes in Stories 'This or That' image comparisons Behind-the-scenes videos that invite feedback When someone likes your post, visit their profile, like some of their content, or leave a comment. This reciprocity often leads to stronger connections and increased long-term engagement. Likes are easy, but comments and shares happen when your content teaches, entertains, or inspires. Examples: Quick tips or tutorials Inspirational quotes with personal stories Exclusive insider insights Monitor which posts turn Instagram Likes into comments, shares, and saves. Use Instagram Insights to measure: Engagement rate Comment-to-like ratio Saves and shares per post While Instagram Likes are a good start, they're just the first step in building a strong online presence. By creating interactive content, using strong CTAs, and engaging back, you can transform casual likers into active participants—and active participants into loyal followers. TIME BUSINESS NEWS

Instagram's (META) New Location Sharing Tool Causes User Backlash
Instagram's new location-sharing feature caused a wave of backlash among users after it launched earlier this week. Social media firm Meta (META) introduced the Instagram Map tool on Wednesday as a way to 'stay up-to-date with friends' by showing their 'last active location.' Similar to Snapchat's (SNAP) Snap Map, the feature allows people to see where their friends are posting from. While Meta stated that location sharing is turned off by default unless users choose to opt in, many users posted on Threads saying they were worried that this wasn't the case. Some users said the tool could be dangerous, especially for those trying to stay safe from stalkers or abusers. According to CNBC, one Threads user said they were shocked that Instagram added a map feature that might reveal users' locations without warning. Another pointed out that this could be harmful for people with restraining orders and called it 'incredibly dangerous.' In response to the backlash, Instagram head Adam Mosseri posted on Threads, saying that most of the worries seemed to come from confusion. In fact, because people saw themselves on the map, they assumed others could too. Mosseri reassured users that sharing your location requires two steps of consent, which means that people have to confirm twice before their location is visible. Still, some users said their locations were shared even though they never agreed to it. One person said their map was automatically set to 'on' and shared with everyone, even though their phone settings had Instagram's location access turned off. Nevertheless, a Meta spokesperson emphasized that the feature is off by default and that your live location is only visible if you turn it on, and only to people you follow back or to a custom list you select. Is Meta a Buy, Sell, or Hold? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Strong Buy consensus rating on META stock based on 41 Buys, five Holds, and zero Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. Furthermore, the average META price target of $871.84 per share implies 14.4% upside potential.
