Posh Girls review – boarding school besties on the couch

The Guardian29-01-2025
Muscular writing is required to overcome the cliches of a two-hander set in therapy. Posh Girls may have swapped the analysts' couch for a sofa in the waiting room, but actor-writer pair Harriet Chomley and Sophie Robertson don't quite manage to wriggle out of the limitations of their show's rather forced setup.
Posh Girls pitches itself as a satire of upper-class girlhood, full of careless flouncing, rounded vowels and ridiculous nicknames. When Alex (Chomley) and Hermione (Robertson) run into each other at their very expensive therapist's, Alex's offhand comment that her daddy owns the building gives a sense of scale to their wealth. But this is no eat-the-rich ridicule. Instead, this story of a fractured friendship peels away the fronts these 30-year-olds have put on for each other, revealing the traumatic challenges they have faced and the hole each one's absence has left in the other's life.
Best friends at boarding school, they haven't spoken in more than a decade. Hermione is guarded, recoiling at Alex's probing questions about what she is doing in therapy. But the dark story that unravels, which illuminates the atrocities of boys and the cruelty of girls, makes Alex's cluelessness hard to believe. At times it is as if these characters don't know their own history until they reach it in the script.
Despite a few instances of furious overacting, the pair are good fun to watch together. Chomley's deadpans are particularly entertaining. They quickly fall into leaping through their shared history, with Steve Waddington's direction shunting them between the waiting room and their private school days, the pace slowed with regular blackouts. These jumps in time fill out the backstories, but the performances don't shift much between the two. By flitting back and forth in answer to any questions raised, the script leaves very little unsaid.
A kind heart is lodged at this play's centre. It wants to remind you to check in on your friends, to look out for and believe them. Because the world can be harsh, even to posh girls.
At the King's Head theatre, London, until 2 February

Netflix My Life With The Walter Boys announces major season 3 update

Netflix's My Life With The Walter Boys will be back later this month for its second season. WARNING: This article contains spoilers from My Life With The Walter Boys. ‌ My Life With The Walter Boys season two is merely weeks away, but there's already thrilling news about its third instalment. ‌ The coming-of-age romantic drama truly set tongues wagging when it initially dropped on Netflix two years ago, with Jackie Howard (played by Nikki Rodriguez) compelled to abandon her former existence in New York following the tragic loss of her family. ‌ She's welcomed by her mum's closest mate Katherine Walter (Sarah Rafferty) and resides with her husband and 11 children, comprising 10 boys and one girl, Parker (Alix West Lefler). A romantic triangle swiftly developed between 15 year old Jackie and siblings Alex (Ashby Gentry) and Cole Walters (Noah LaLonde), but a steamy snog with the latter prompted her to bolt from Colorado in the concluding episode. Whilst series two will shortly pick up from the explosive events of the inaugural season, Netflix has now delivered a crucial announcement concerning the third chapter. ‌ It was revealed back in May that My Life With The Walter Boys would be making a comeback for series three. Nevertheless, Netflix has subsequently announced that filming on the third season commenced today, Wednesday, August 6. ‌ Posting on X, previously Twitter, the streaming giant shared a snap of Rodriguez, Gentry and LaLonde alongside the message: "My Life With The Walter Boys season two? August 28. Season three? Now in production." Supporters couldn't hold back from rushing to the comments section to rejoice, with one viewer penning: "Season two dropping soon and Season 3 already in the works?" "My Life with the Walter Boys fans are eating good! Can't wait to see where the story goes next. ‌ "Double treat incoming!" a second declared, whilst another shared: "Season two isn't even out yet and we're already getting season three? Nice." A wave of additional comments also poured in, featuring "Rate this", "wow" and "so excited". ‌ Meanwhile, a viewer remarked: "Already? Don't make us wait another two years then." Production commenced on August 6 and is understood to be set to wrap on December 1, 2025. An official premiere date for the third series hasn't been revealed but it is anticipated to arrive sometime in 2026 so the delay will be considerably briefer this time round. In the interim, enthusiasts have series two to look forward to but how will Jackie's romances with Alex and Cole unfold as she returns to Silver Falls? My Life With The Walter Boys series two launches on Thursday, August 28, on Netflix.

Hotel Inspector Alex Polizzi reveals one 'grubby' city she'll 'never return to'

For years Alex Polizzi has been helping to turn around the fortunes of struggling hotels, but she has recently revealed how there is one place that she will never return to The Hotel Inspector star Alex Polizzi has revealed she will never return to Hong Kong after finding the city "overcrowded, dirty and polluted". ‌ Since 2008, Alex has appeared on the Channel 5 show where she tried to revive the fortunes of some of Britain's ailing hotels to prevent them from closing down. ‌ During an interview with the Times she revealed that one negative experience during a trip abroad means she will never return to the destination. ‌ Recalling her trip to Asia in the 1990s, she said: "One place I'd never go back to is Hong Kong, where I trained at the Mandarin Oriental for three years in my twenties. I found the region overcrowded, dirty and polluted." Despite her damning take, Alex conceded that the destination would have been better suited to the more wealthy, adding: "It's a fun place to visit if you're really rich, but not if you're not." ‌ With a population of 7.5 million fitting into just 430 square miles, Hong Kong is the fourth most densely populated region in the world, trailing just Macau, Monaco and Singapore. After originally starting a wholesale bakery business with her then boyfriend in the late 90s, she made the decision to pursue a career in hotel management. Starting out at her mother Olga Polizzi's Hotel Endsleigh in Milton Abbot, Devon, it was in 2021 that the mother and daughter would join forces and open The Star in Alfriston, in East Sussex. ‌ However, Alex is possibly best-known for her broadcasting career and more specifically hosting The Hotel Inspector on Channel 5, taking over from Ruth Watson in 2008. With her stock continuing to rise during her time on the show, she has also been seen on various other shows including BBC's Alex Polizzi: The Fixer, Alex Polizzi: Chefs on Trial as well as Alex Polizzi's Secret Italy and Alex Polizzi: My Hotel Nightmare on Channel 5. ‌ Alex is also the niece of Sir Rocco Forte, one of, if not the most notorious name in the industry. Starting his hotel empire with his sister Olga Polizzi, in 1996, Sir Rocco owns and operates an impressive 14 luxury hotels across Europe. The company currently has two locations in the UK, Brown's Hotel, London and The Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh. The Hotel Inspector is set to return to our screens tomorrow evening (Thursday, August 7) at 8pm on Channel 5.
