KL club riot: Police investigating armed assault, six detained
Brickfields police chief ACP Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood said the arrests followed a police report lodged by a 29-year-old man at 9.33am on Sunday.
The victim claimed he was assaulted by a group of unidentified men while leaving the nightclub, sustaining injuries to his back.
'Acting on the information, six suspects aged between 25 and 29 were arrested. All are remanded for four days until August 21,' he said in a statement today, adding that the case is being investigated under Sections 148 and 326 of the Penal Code.

JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 20 — The unemployed 31-year-old man, who torched a MBJB tow lorry in anger last week, was handed down a prison term and fine at the Sessions Court here today. The accused, Wan Muhammad Nasrul W Ahmad, was handed down five years and a fine of RM6,000 by Sessions Court Judge Thalha Bachok @ Embok Mok, in addition to a jail term of six months if he fails to pay the fine. Wan Muhammad Nasrul, who pleaded guilty during yesterday's proceedings, was today brought back to the same court for the viewing of the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of the incident. After the charge was read out again today, the accused maintained his guilty plea of using petrol with intent to cause destruction by burning a tow truck belonging to MBJB, causing a loss of RM24,000 at the council's vehicle storage depot at Lot 1, Johor Bahru Waterfront here at 11.07am last Friday. In an appeal before the sentence was handed down, Wan Muhammad Nasrul, told the court that he had no money because he was just still looking for a job and had many financial commitments. Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Fatimah Mamu, in her argument, said that although the accused gave the excuse of being angered as he was unable to pay, the act of burning a tow truck in a public area could clearly affect safety.

Anti-Bullying Act proposal to go to Cabinet soon, Azalina says amid vague definition of offence and penalties
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — The proposal to draft an Anti-Bullying Act is expected to be tabled at a Cabinet meeting soon, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. She said discussions at the policy level are crucial, as each relevant ministry, such as the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM), the Education Ministry (MoE), the Higher Education Ministry (MoHE), and the Ministry of National Unity may have their views regarding the enforcement aspects of the law. 'After each ministry submits its feedback, the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) will conduct a detailed study and engagement sessions before the matter is brought to the policy level and subsequently to Parliament,' she said. She was speaking at the ASEAN Law Forum 2025 themed 'Empowering Access to Justice in the ASEAN Economic Community: Bridging Legal Cooperation for Inclusive Growth in the Digital Era' at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today. Azalina said the main issue currently is the absence of a specific definition of bullying or penalties for such offences under existing legal provisions. She said bullying-related cases are currently dealt with under various laws including the Online Safety Act, the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act, labour laws as well as several provisions under the Penal Code. As such, BHEUU will soon issue a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to clarify the differences between the Penal Code and the Child Act, to avoid confusion among the public. 'Many misunderstand… children can still be charged under criminal law. However, the procedure is different. For example, they cannot be tried in an open court. 'I want to give assurance that wrong is still wrong. The law applies to everyone, whether children or adults,' she said. Azalina also said that MoE has outlined comprehensive procedures in addressing bullying cases in schools through a detailed guideline document. 'I've seen the book, it's quite thick and it provides detailed, step-by-step instructions on what to do and how to resolve cases,' she said. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, at the Finance Ministry's Monthly Assembly in Putrajaya earlier today, said the proposal to establish a tribunal on bullying cases involving students and children will also be brought to the Cabinet meeting. The three-day ASEAN Law Forum 2025 gathered 58 speakers and moderators in 15 sessions, with over 300 participants from ASEAN and international bodies discussing various topics, including alternative dispute resolution, commercial law reform and human rights in the digital era. Among those present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran, Secretary of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Anna Joubin-Bret, Timor-Leste's Justice Minister Sérgio de Jesus Fernandes da Costa Hornai and Laos' Deputy Justice Minister Ketsana Phommachanh.

Child sexual exploitation WhatsApp group with over 700 people — who's the mastermind? Home minister says cops still probing
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 20 — Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has reportedly confirmed that the police are looking into any masterminds behind a child sexual exploitation WhatsApp group involving 12-year-old girls. New Straits Times quoted the home minister saying investigators have not determined this fact yet, and stressed the case must be handled carefully and in line with procedures since minors are involved. 'There are specific protocols for handling cases involving children – photographs cannot be shown, names cannot be disclosed, and so forth. 'The police are therefore carrying out their duties through the Criminal Investigation Department's (CID) Women and Child Investigation Division (D11),' he told reporters after the Home Ministry's monthly assembly here. He said cases involving children require a detailed understanding of their age, level of thinking, and motivations. 'What led the child to decide to leave school? Leaving school entirely because they saw this as a way to make money. All of these factors need to be examined,' he said. He added that the child's involvement required careful police handling with support from psychiatric specialists because of her age and vulnerability. Yesterday, Saifuddin said the police have recently uncovered a case where children as young as 12 were being exploited online to sell images of themselves. Saifuddin said the ring started after a 12-year-old girl created a website with four of her friends, and a WhatsApp group where their child sexual exploitation materials were shared grew to 762 members. He did not state whether the members of the group involved adults or minors. However, he stressed that cases involving children could not be tackled by enforcement alone and required wider involvement. His revelation came when responding to Jerai MP Sabri Azit, who had asked whether the police are acting against 'swinger' — where consenting adults swap their partners, usually spouses, for sex.
