Similar to hip hop, when it came on the scene in the mid-1970s, Amapiano and Gqom music allowed black youth to carve out careers from their passions.
Producer and DJ Dlala Thukzin is one of those young artists who epitomise this.
On Thursday, the BET Awards announced nominees for next month's awards. Among them was the iPlan hit-maker, who is nominated in the Best New International Act category.
Three South Africans, including Thukzin, are among the 11 nominees in that category. Rapper Maglera Doe Boy and Amapiano duo TxC are the other South Africans nominated in the category.
The BET Awards will take place on 9 June at Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.

Dlala Thukzin's rise
Real name Thuthuka Zindlovu, Thukzin hails from Lamontville in the south of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal.
Thukzin has built a reputation as one of the most appreciated Amapiano and Gqom producers in the last decade.
On Sunday, Thukzin won the Best Producer award at the Urban Music Awards (UMAs).
Earlier in the year, he was a multiple nominee at the Trace Awards in Zanzibar. Even though he walked away empty–handed, his talents were recognised.
He announced his arrival in the industry in 2016 by producing Babes Wodumo's hit, Umngan'wami. Since then, he has produced for other artists and released music under his name.
The song was memorable to throngs of fans, and his working relations with Babes left an impression on the performer who gave Thukzin his flowers.
'Most of all into engithanda kuwena awukaze wayilahla respect for me and even when abantu sebengshiyile but wena Thukzin uhlezi unami,' wrote Babes in a post over a year ago.
In it, she expressed her appreciation for Thukzin's continued respect for her even when other people have deserted her.
She said her husband the, late Kwaito star Mampintsha, is proud of Thukizn wherever he is.
'I'm also sure nala uShimora la ekhona he is proud of how much you have achieved. Ziningi izinto and sawshaya amaHit la eWest Ink,' said Babes.
Earlier this year, when floods ravaged his hometown of Lamontville and surrounding areas, Thukzin lent a helping hand.
'We are living in hard times. To see people from my community experience such a tragedy is painful. In due course, we'll see how we can assist them,' said Thukzin, speaking to TimesLive at the time.

BET Awards
The BET nominees were selected by the BET Voting Academy, an esteemed group of entertainment professionals and influencers in the fields of music, media, digital marketing, sports journalism, public relations, and creative arts.
Kendrick Lamar holds the top spot with ten nominations this year. They include Album of the Year for GNX and Video of the Year for Not Like Us.
While Thukzin and Maglera are nominated in the Best New International Act category, Tyla and Uncle Waffles received nods in the Best International Act category, with the latter representing Eswatini.

Turn up the volume: DJ Lag reimagines Gqom with his latest hit 'Woza'

With 'Woza', DJ Lag proves once again why he's not just shaping Gqom - he's constantly evolving it. The Durban-born producer, widely regarded as the 'King of Gqom', is back with his latest single, 'Woza', featuring Sir Trill and Sykes - a track that pushes the boundaries of Gqom while staying rooted in its township origins. Speaking to 'Independent Media Lifestyle', DJ Lag opened up about the creative process behind the track. 'It started with the beat,' he explained. 'I made it last year and recorded Sir Trill in December. I left the song unfinished for months, thinking about who else to bring on, and Sykes felt like the perfect choice.' He added, 'That 3-Step vibe was something I had been exploring at the time … I actually made this beat around the time I was first dipping my toes into that sound.' The collaboration with Sir Trill and Sykes was organic. 'I sent Sir Trill the track and he loved it. He finally popped into the studio while I was in a session with Thakzin, laid the vocals down, and that's why he's shouting out Thakzin on the hook,' DJ Lag recalled. 'With Sykes, I wanted someone who's a great male vocalist and writer, and he came to mind. It just made sense.' 'Woza' merges the unmistakable pulse of Gqom with fresh electronic textures. 'I always try to give a fresh sound to Gqom,' DJ Lag said. 'With this song, I added a lot of 3-step elements … it just came naturally.'

The first project, 'VANSZA', is a short film about growth and self-expression. In it, SZA encourages people to push themselves and embrace new possibilities while wearing the iconic black-and-white Knu Skool pair, which are her favourite go-to sneakers. Shot by Sophie Jones and styled by Alejandra Hernandez, the video blends her laid-back style with Vans' skate-inspired edge. 'As artistic director, my mission is to show that joy, community, creativity and fashion are all still connected. That humanity, culture and connection are still the access points. They stand where I stand, and I'm honoured to invite a whole bunch of people to stand Off the Wall with us.' This move follows the earlier launch of her beauty brand, 'Not Beauty', earlier this year. The range debuted with three lip gloss shades, which are 'In The Flesh', 'Strawberry Jelly' and 'Quartz' She first sold her lip gloss range at pop-up shops during her 'Grand National Tour' with Kendrick Lamar. SZA has been wearing her own products long before releasing them. 'I'm not a beauty maven, but I know lips. I know what I like, and I'm diligent about finding the best quality ingredients,' she told "Vogue". Following her success in beauty, SZA's collaboration with Vans marks another significant step in her creative path. The 'SOS' singer's new role is also a big step for Vans. The brand has a long history of working with creative people, and teaming up with her brings a fresh point of view. They intend to combine her personal style with Vans' skate and streetwear aesthetic, all while upholding the brand's core values of originality and authenticity.

WATCH: Kat Clark's Johannesburg adventure with Tyla's Sister - a tour to remember

Sydney Seethal and Kat Clark at the Museum of Illusions in Johannesburg. Image: Instagram The beauty of travelling lies in the endless opportunities to meet new people and forge friendships. Recently, Australian influencer Kat Clark embarked on an exciting adventure in South Africa, where she discovered the vibrant culture of Mzansi and made a new friend along the way. Clark took to Instagram to share her experiences exploring Johannesburg, guided by none other than Sydney Seethal, the sister of Tyler. With Seethal as her tour guide, Clark visited several hot spots around Johannesburg, including the fascinating Illusion Museum, where she marvelled at optical illusions, and tried her hand at indoor bowling. Of course, no visit to Johannesburg would be complete without indulging in the culinary delights of Rosebank. 'I don't know about you, but I get so shy meeting new people. Today, I met Sydney and her friends for the very first time. I felt really nervous, and to make matters worse, I thought Sydney was nothing like me. "When she was planning our day, she literally had bungee jumping booked for us, and I was like, 'Oh no, you need to change that,'' Clark shared. During their time together, Clark discovered that her husband, Jonathan, and Seethal's family are originally from Wentworth in Durban. Rosebank is a trendy neighbourhood in Johannesburg, renowned for its diverse attractions, including world-class art galleries, unique shopping experiences, and lively entertainment venues. This compact area is easily explored on foot, offering a delightful mix of global and local influences. Clark initially travelled to Mzansi for a safari adventure with her daughter. The popular digital creator, known for her engaging family content, documented their journey to the world-famous Kruger National Park with excitement and awe. The mother-daughter duo stayed at the luxurious Malewane Lodge, located at Royal Malewane in Mpumalanga, a destination celebrated for its opulent safari experience.
