DJ duo TxC to showcase South African designers at BET Awards 2025

entertainment, music TxC are nominated in the "Best New International Act" category at the BET Awards 2025. Picture: Supplied Image: Supplied Amapiano duo TxC, consisting of Tarryn Reid and Clairise Hefke, have received a nomination in the "Best New International Act" category at the BET Awards 2025. South Africa has four nominations for the 2025 BET Best International Act award: Tyla, Maglera Doe Boy, Dlala Thukzin, and the duo TxC. TxC is the first DJ duo ever to be recognised in this category at the American awards show, set for June 9. 'Being the first duos to be nominated feels like we're breaking new grounds. Not just for ourselves, but for everyone who's ever felt like they've had to fit into a box to succeed. 'It shows that it is possible, I didn't think last year that we would be at the BET Awards this year, it's a surreal feeling. 'To see the growth and how far we've come as the first female duo, DJ duos, in Africa to be nominated. It's a crazy experience.' Amapiano Dj duo TxC Image: Instagram/@txc Video Player is loading. The childhood friends have built themselves strong careers as DJs dominating in the amapiano space. They advise that to succeed as a duo things need to be personal before being business. 'We've been in each other's lives for most of our lives, even before becoming what we are today and getting to know each other personally first is what saves what we have today. 'The goal is always the same, the work ethic is always the same. We all are always on the same page. And with duos, you can't compete with each other because then that means your goal is not the same. 'As long as you allow yourselves to be your selves and not try to overpower, over be, or overdo. We also tend to keep it very real.' 'I feel like most duos don't make it far because, you know, the one starts wanting to be better than the other one. The one feels like they're getting underpaid or overpaid. 'But if everything is the same and the communication is there within that group, I don't think anything bad should happen, and I think it should only be growth from there.' Being a public figure also means you have to put your best fashion forward and TxC are always seen in darring fashion-forward outfits. One would think that deciding on what to wear for the duo might be tough but they have developed a strategy. Hefke explains that they sit down and talk about what looks they want to rock and share ideas on how they want to feel and look. 'Because we also don't want to just look like everyone else. You know, we always try to look different. It also depends on the event or where we would go, and what kind of party it would be. We'd always try and relate our fashion to whatever event we're attending.' For the BET Awards Hefke and Reid say they will be working with local designers and stylists for their international red carpet experience. TxC has released two albums they have worked with international stars such as Davido and have performed in Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and FIFA Fan Festival. They stated that they view pressure positively, explaining that it motivates them to improve and think more ambitiously. 'I don't look at pressure as something negative or, you know, a problem. I look at it as a win. I feel like pressure is always a sign that you're doing something. God wants you to do more. 'He puts pressure in front of you so that you can actually do your best.' Picture: dlalathukzin/Instagram Similar to hip hop, when it came on the scene in the mid-1970s, Amapiano and Gqom music allowed black youth to carve out careers from their passions. Producer and DJ Dlala Thukzin is one of those young artists who epitomise this. On Thursday, the BET Awards announced nominees for next month's awards. Among them was the iPlan hit-maker, who is nominated in the Best New International Act category. Three South Africans, including Thukzin, are among the 11 nominees in that category. Rapper Maglera Doe Boy and Amapiano duo TxC are the other South Africans nominated in the category. The BET Awards will take place on 9 June at Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. Tyla flies SA flag high with BET Award nominations

South Africa's own Tyla is once again making waves on the global stage. The 2025 BET Awards have just announced their nominees, and Tyla is right at the heart of the celebration. Her name shines among the best, proving that Mzansi's music scene is not just alive-it's thriving. Tyla has been nominated for three major awards this year: Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Best New Artist, and Best International Act. These are not just any categories, they spotlight the biggest and brightest in the world. She stands shoulder to shoulder with the likes of SZA, Coco Jones, Ayra Starr, and Victoria Monét in the Best Female R&B/Pop Artist category. For Best New Artist, she's up against heavyweights like Ayra Starr and Teddy Swims, according to Billboard. And in the Best International Act category, she represents South Africa alongside Uncle Waffles, with other global talents from Brazil, Nigeria, the UK, and France. Tyla's nominations are a proud moment for South Africa, as she's not alone; Uncle Waffles, Maglera Doe Boy, Dlala Thukzin, and TxC are also up for awards. Monde Twala, Senior Vice President & Co-General Manager at Paramount Africa, summed it up: 'At BET, we are proud to continue elevating and celebrating Black excellence on a global scale. The 2025 nominations reflect the incredible creativity, influence, and impact of African artists who are shaping culture and pushing boundaries. Tyla and her peers represent the diversity and heartbeat of a new generation, and the global resonance of our sounds.' Tyla's journey from Johannesburg to international stardom has been nothing short of spectacular. Her chart-topping hits and unique sound have earned her fans across continents. Last year, she took home two BET Awards, Best New Artist and Best International Act, making her a household name and a symbol of African excellence. In her previous acceptance speech, Tyla said: 'I want to dedicate this one to Africa. I want to dedicate this to all the African superstars before me that didn't get these opportunities that I'm getting. This is just amazing. Africa to the world, guys.' The BET Awards are a stamp of approval from the global music community. Winners receive not only recognition but also a boost in career opportunities. The ceremony, held in Los Angeles, is watched by millions. For South Africans, seeing Tyla on that stage is a reminder that local talent can and does compete with the best. Whether she brings home the awards or not, Tyla's nominations are already a victory for South Africa. They show that our artists are not just following trends-they're setting them. As Tyla herself said, 'Africa to the world.' And the world is watching. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. AfroFuture Detroit unveils first wave of festival acts: Davido, Kaytranada, more

An international array of artists will help create the musical tapestry this summer at the inaugural AfroFuture Detroit festival. Organizers on Thursday announced the first wave of artists tapped for the event, which will run Aug. 16-17 at the Bedrock Detroit Douglass Site, just north of downtown. Also unveiled Thursday were Nigerian gospel singer Flavour and rising Afrobeat artist Lojay, with Detroit rapper Tee Grizzley as the first hometown act named to the 2025 lineup. Producers also revealed the first batch of DJs and party hosts to lead the action elsewhere on the AfroFuture grounds, including DBN Gogo, Juls, TxC, and DJ K-DAWG & EZ Pass, whose sets will fuse culture-spanning music with classic Detroit sounds. The fest's main-stage artists will include Nigerian star Davido, Haitian-Canadian DJ Kaytranada, Brazilian pop singer Ludmilla and Congolese singer-rapper Gims. AfroFuture was launched in Ghana in 2019 — then as Afrochella — setting out to celebrate African music's global diaspora. The festival's U.S. debut comes this August at the Douglass Site in Detroit, where a previous fest brand, Afro Nation, was presented in 2023 and 2024. This year's event will feature two music stages, a designer marketplace and other amenities. In anticipation of a visiting audience, organizers also announced lodging partnerships with the Roost Detroit at Block Tower and the Courtyard by Marriott Detroit Downtown, and an airline partnership with Delta that offers discounted flights. AfroFuture Detroit is sponsored by Bedrock and produced by Paxahau, whose other events include the annual Movement electronic music festival at Hart Plaza.
