
Indo-French next-generation fighter engine collab gets minimum thrust
Sources said after a consultative process, which included feedback from stakeholders and a technical committee that went deep into all aspects of fighter jet engine manufacturing, a decision has been taken to recommend a collaboration with France, as the proposal was found to be more beneficial for India.

Under the ₹61,000 crore project, India will jointly develop a 120kn fighter jet engine that will be used for future platforms, including the advanced medium combat aircraft (AMCA). Defence minister Rajnath Singh has been a key driver behind plans to develop an indigenous fighter engine and its manufacturing ecosystem in India.
The ministry evaluated offers from France's Safran and UK's Rolls Royce, with experts going into the technical aspects as well as potential costs. The French offer, with complete technology transfer, had also been made earlier, with Safran suggesting a roadmap that would match the development timeframe of AMCA.
As things stand, the first batch of AMCA may need to be fitted with US-made GE 414 engines, while efforts will go on parallelly to develop an indigenous power plant. An engine is at the very core of a fighter aircraft and few nations around the world have mastered the technology. By conservative estimates, India will require well over 250 next-generation engines in the coming decade.
At present, all Indian fighter jets are powered by foreign-origin engines. A significant cost of a fighter goes towards engine and its maintenance. India has made efforts to develop its own engine under
project Kaveri
but it could not lead to a conclusion as the engine was not found to generate adequate thrust. A derivative of the Kaveri is now being developed to power unmanned combat aerial vehicles.
India is also in talks for technology transfer with the US for the GE414 INS6 engine that will be used to power the Mk2 version of light combat aircraft. Negotiations have not yet been concluded, with India looking for over 80% tech transfer including coating for the hot end of the engine as well as crystal blades and laser drilling tech.

Rupee trades near one-month low despite tariff cheers; opens at 86.41/$
The Indian Rupee opened near the one-month low level on Wednesday as the US-Japan trade deal failed to lift sentiments in the country's forex market. The domestic currency opened 4 paise lower at 86.41 against the dollar on Wednesday, according to Bloomberg. The rupee has witnessed nearly 0.93 per cent depreciation in the current calendar year. On Tuesday, the rupee briefly recovered to 86.22 before slipping to a one-month low of 86.41 against the greenback. The Indian rupee, which had weakened to 86.42 in the previous session, is set to trade stronger, supported by optimism around the Japan trade deal that lifted sentiment across Asian markets, according to Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury and executive director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP. Exporters are advised to hold off on booking, with a stop-loss at 86.25, as foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) continue to sell, analysts said. FPIs sold equities for teh second straight day, worth ₹3,548.92 crore, taking the total outflows in July to ₹5826 crore. Importers, meanwhile, may consider buying on dips for near-term cash requirements, Bhansali said. Rupee is expected to remain within a range of 85.75-86.60, according to Jateen Trivedi, VP research analyst - commodity and currency at LKP Securities. On the tariffs front, the US President Donald Trump announced a trade deal, imposing a 15 per cent tariff on Japanese exports to the US. The Trump administration had also reached an agreement with the Philippines setting a 19 per cent tariff on their exports. Equity and currency markets in the Asia region rose after the deal announcement. ALSO READ: Following this, the dollar index, a measure of the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was up 0.05 per cent at 97.44. In commodities, crude oil prices were stable amid US-Japan trade deal optimism and crude oil inventory decline of the US. Brent crude price was up 0.31 per cent at 68.80 per barrel, while WTI crude prices were lower by 1.47 per cent at 66.21, as of 9:09 AM IST. ALSO READ:

Trump slaps 19% tariffs on Philippines, Indonesia; US to face zero duties
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (local time) announced new trade agreements with the Philippines and Indonesia, imposing a 19 per cent tariff on their exports while allowing US goods to enter duty-free. The development follows a White House meeting between Trump and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Trump made the announcement on his social media platform Truth Social. "President Ferdinand Marcos, of the Philippines, is just leaving the White House, with all of his many Representatives. It was a beautiful visit, and we concluded our Trade Deal, whereby The Philippines is going OPEN MARKET with the United States, and ZERO Tariffs. The Philippines will pay a 19% Tariff. In addition, we will work together Militarily [sic]," he said. Marcos termed the deal a "significant achievement' for Manila and also said the Philippines will increase imports of soy and wheat products as well as medicines from the US, Bloomberg reported. US-Philippines deficit According to the US government data, in 2024, Washington had a trade deficit of $4.9 billion with Manila, with total trade at $23.5 billion. Ahead of the meeting with the Trump administration, Marcos' government indicated that they were willing to offer zero tariffs on some US goods, reported the Associated Press. This marked a shift in the stance of the Marcos government, which previously said it could not offer a zero tariff to Washington, like Vietnam and Indonesia, claiming that it would hurt domestic businesses. Trump signs deal with Indonesia In a separate post on Truth Social, Trump announced a deal with Indonesia, bringing down their tariff rate from 32 per cent to 19 per cent. "It is my Great Honor to announce our Trade Agreement with the Republic of Indonesia, as represented by their Highly Respected President, Prabowo Subianto. It is agreed that Indonesia will be Open Market to American Industrial and Tech Products, and Agricultural Goods, by eliminating 99% of their Tariff Barriers [sic]," he said. He also announced that Washington will sell American-made goods to Indonesia at zero tariff rate. "In addition, Indonesia will supply the United States with their precious Critical Minerals, as well as sign BIG Deals, worth Tens of Billions of Dollars, to purchase Boeing Aircraft, American Farm products, and American Energy. This Deal is a HUGE WIN for our Automakers, Tech Companies, Workers, Farmers, Ranchers, and Manufacturers", Trump noted. The US had a trade imbalance of $17.9 billion with Indonesia, reported the Associated Press. Trump sends out tariff letters As the 90-day deadline ended on July 9, the Trump administration started sending out letters to trading partners, announcing to them new tariff rates, which would come into effect on August 1. He previously sent out letters to Japan and South Korea, charging both allies with 25 per cent tariffs. Soon after, he sent out letters to 12 other countries, including Indonesia, which was threatened with a 32 per cent tariff.

Gold soared to a 5-week high and silver nearly touched a 14-year record. Weakness in both the US dollar index and treasury yields, amid expectations of policy easing, supported the rally. On the domestic front, rupee depreciation against the dollar added upward pressure on bullion prices. However, a surprise trade deal with Japan provided some support to currency markets thereby restricting further gains in bullion."
