‘Bengalis being harassed': Mamata Banerjee vows to oust BJP from Centre on Martyrs' Day
"Our fight will continue till we oust the BJP from the Centre," said Mamata Banerjee, addressing a large crowd of supporters at Esplanade. The annual rally on 'Shaheed Diwas' marks the killing of 13 youth Congress workers in 1993 during a protest in Kolkata.

Targeting the BJP over rising crimes against women, Mamata Banerjee demanded answers and accountability from the saffron party.
"The BJP should answer why women in states ruled by it are facing atrocities," she said, adding, "We are against any form of atrocities against women, take immediate action against such incidents."
'We have to win more seats in the 2026 Bengal assembly election, then aim to defeat the BJP at the Centre,' Trinamool Congress supremo said at the rally.

She also raised concerns about the treatment of Bengalis in the BJP-ruled states, claiming they are being singled out and persecuted.
"Bengalis being harassed, put in detention camps in the BJP-ruled states," the CM alleged.
Sharpening her attack on Himanta Biswas Sarma, Banerjee said, "The Assam chief minister, who cannot properly handle his own state, meddling in affairs of Bengal, Mamata Banerjee at TMC Martyrs' Day rally.

In a sharp political accusation, Banerjee said there was a coordinated attempt to disenfranchise Bengalis.
"The BJP and the Election Commission are conspiring against Bengal and want to remove Bengalis from the voter list," she alleged, without citing specific incidents.
'The BJP is planning to conduct special intensive revision (SIR)-like exercise in West Bengal, but we will never allow it,' Banerjee said.
This year's Shaheed Diwas rally holds significance as it is being seen as the launchpad for the TMC's campaign for the 2026 West Bengal assembly election.
The BJP, meanwhile, had dismissed the allegations as political posturing, blaming the TMC government for the chaos over the documentation of migrant workers and infiltration.
Apart from Banerjee, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee will be the key speaker at the rally.

New Delhi, Aug 11 (UNI) The Supreme Court today criticised the growing tendency among litigants and lawyers to assume that justice cannot be delivered by High Courts in matters involving political figures, warning that such unfounded allegations amount to contempt of court. A bench of Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, Justice K. Vinod Chandran, and Justice Atul S. Chandurkar was hearing a case where it had earlier issued notice to litigant Peddi Raju and his counsel, asking why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them for allegedly making scurrilous allegations against Telangana High Court judge Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya. The allegations were made in a petition seeking transfer of a case, in which Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had secured relief away from the Telangana High Court. The High Court had quashed certain criminal charges against Reddy under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The top court directed Raju and his lawyers to tender an apology before Justice Bhattacharya, leaving it to her discretion to accept or reject it. Referring to a recent precedent, the bench noted, 'Recently, a three-judge bench of this Court, to which two of us were party, held that wisdom lies in forgiving rather than punishing in such cases, and accepted the lawyer's apology.' In its order, the Supreme Court observed that such remarks in a petition constitute contempt, adding, 'We have noticed that nowadays it has become a trend among lawyers to critique judges of High Courts and trial courts. It has become a trend that when a matter involves a political figure, there is an assumption that there cannot be justice in the High Court.' The bench stressed that High Court judges, as constitutional authorities, enjoy the same respect and immunity as Supreme Court judges. 'Under the constitutional scheme, they have the same respect as the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court does not have any administrative control over the High Court or its judges. For the BJP, the assembly elections in Bihar are not just about forming a state government, but about a crucial political development in the offing. They are about reclaiming national dominance in time for the presidential election due in 2027. Internally, senior political and poll strategists of the BJP have marked Bihar as a 'priority" state. And it has now become more critical than even Maharashtra or Uttar Pradesh in the coming cycle, News18 has learnt. The urgency and growing significance stem from certain numbers. According to a senior source in the BJP ranks, the party's electoral college edge for the presidential poll has dropped from 69 percent to just 52 percent after the 2024 Lok Sabha results. That slip has triggered alarms in Delhi. With little addition expected from West Bengal, Kerala, or Punjab, and, with Uttar Pradesh maxed out and Uttarakhand already being saturated, the party now has only two realistic growth zones that include Tamil Nadu and Bihar – a short-term imperative. THE MATH THAT MATTERS This calculation makes the upcoming Bihar polls a make-or-break situation. The BJP aims at increasing its seat share by at least 35, not only to form the government but to build a decisive buffer for 2027 that is seen as a contest the party cannot afford to lose. Every assembly seat from Bihar contributes to the strength of the electoral college, and the state's 243 seats can significantly tilt the balance. This, meanwhile, adds freshness to the political equation, which is clearly about the absence of succession drama in the JD(U). Sources said Nishant Kumar, son of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is not likely to contest the assembly polls. 'Both Nitish and the BJP want to avoid a dynastic narrative in this sensitive situation. For the BJP, this clears the way to take over the NDA command in Bihar, sidestepping legacy issues and allegations," a senior BJP leader said. 'The party is also doing everything it can possibly do to avoid internal sabotage like in 2020. This time, Chirag (Paswan) is seeking more seats, overlapping with the JD(U) turf. The BJP is, however, trying to rein him in to avoid rupturing the alliance, or antagonising Nitish Kumar," said another source.
