Bihar 2025: Why BJP Eyes Upcoming Assembly Polls As Power Play For 2027 Presidency
They are about reclaiming national dominance in time for the presidential election due in 2027. Internally, senior political and poll strategists of the BJP have marked Bihar as a 'priority" state.
And it has now become more critical than even Maharashtra or Uttar Pradesh in the coming cycle, News18 has learnt.
The urgency and growing significance stem from certain numbers. According to a senior source in the BJP ranks, the party's electoral college edge for the presidential poll has dropped from 69 percent to just 52 percent after the 2024 Lok Sabha results.
That slip has triggered alarms in Delhi. With little addition expected from West Bengal, Kerala, or Punjab, and, with Uttar Pradesh maxed out and Uttarakhand already being saturated, the party now has only two realistic growth zones that include Tamil Nadu and Bihar – a short-term imperative.
THE MATH THAT MATTERS
This calculation makes the upcoming Bihar polls a make-or-break situation. The BJP aims at increasing its seat share by at least 35, not only to form the government but to build a decisive buffer for 2027 that is seen as a contest the party cannot afford to lose.
Every assembly seat from Bihar contributes to the strength of the electoral college, and the state's 243 seats can significantly tilt the balance. This, meanwhile, adds freshness to the political equation, which is clearly about the absence of succession drama in the JD(U).
Sources said Nishant Kumar, son of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is not likely to contest the assembly polls. 'Both Nitish and the BJP want to avoid a dynastic narrative in this sensitive situation. For the BJP, this clears the way to take over the NDA command in Bihar, sidestepping legacy issues and allegations," a senior BJP leader said.
'The party is also doing everything it can possibly do to avoid internal sabotage like in 2020. This time, Chirag (Paswan) is seeking more seats, overlapping with the JD(U) turf. The BJP is, however, trying to rein him in to avoid rupturing the alliance, or antagonising Nitish Kumar," said another source.

Saffron party raises issue in Assembly
Raising the matter during the Zero Hour, BJP state President B Y Vijayendra said Nayak from the Valmiki community was murdered heinously for being in love with a woman from another community. Noting that the accused had made reels using the machete a day ahead of the murder and had posted the video on Instagram, he alleged that police not taking caution had led to the murder. Claiming that only after the protests, police took action and made arrests, Vijayendra pointing out that Nayak's family is poor, demanded compensation for them, as Rs 25 lakh was given to the family of Mohammed Fazil, who was killed in Mangaluru. 'As Gavisiddappa Nayak family is poor, a minimum of Rs 50 lakh compensation should be given, along with 2 acre land and a government job to one of his family members,' he said, adding that the case should be handed over to NIA, as there is no faith on the police department. Later, when Speaker U T Khader said that the government will give its reply on Thursday, as the home minister was not present, the BJP members demanded an answer today itself, as it was a serious case. This led to a heated exchange between BJP and the ruling Congress. The BJP members, including C N Ashwath Narayan, accused the government of showing negligence in the case, and questioned whether the 'government is alive?' Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi hit back, alleging that the opposition party was playing politics over death, and asserted that the administration had taken prompt action in the case. The Speaker denied any further discussion on the issue as it was raised under the Zero Hour. He said the government will give its reply when the home minister is present in the House.

BJP seeks NIA probe into activist's murder, writes to Guv
Bengaluru: The BJP on Wednesday urged Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to prevail upon the state government to hand over the probe into the murder of a Hindu activist in Koppal to the NIA, alleging a 'deep-rooted conspiracy' by Jehadi extremist groups. In a detailed memorandum submitted to the Governor at Raj Bhavan, the BJP legislators said Gavisiddappa Nayak, a Scheduled Tribe Valmiki community leader, was brutally murdered on August 3 in front of the Syed Nadeemullah Qadri Mosque at Koppal town. The party alleged that the murder bore the 'stamp of the PFI and SDPI' and accused the Congress government of showing a 'soft corner' to 'dangerous elements.' 'The peace and tranquility of Koppal were shattered due to the brutal, cold-blooded murder of one Gavisiddappa Nayak on 3rd August 2025. The murder took place between 7.30 pm and 8 pm right in front of the Mosque in the heart of Koppal town,' the memorandum said. The BJP legislators alleged that the prime accused, Sadiq Kolkar, had openly paraded with swords and machetes in Koppal a day before the murder and posted videos on social media. 'Had the police made preventive arrests on the same day, the murder, perhaps, could have been prevented. We charge the police of dereliction of duty, negligence and irresponsibility,' they said. According to the memorandum, Nayak was first called to a highway for talks but was later killed inside Koppal town. 'The intention and motive are very clear -- to create terror among the Hindus and prove to the society that they can kill anybody with impunity and escape with felicity,' it said. The BJP further alleged that the nature of the attack--beheading and throat-slitting--resembled earlier killings of Hindu activists in coastal Karnataka. 'Going through the intention, the pattern and the motive behind the killing, it can be safely concluded that this Koppal murder has all the stamp of the SDPI and PFI,' the party said, adding that 'Jehadi forces operating in coastal districts have entered Koppal in Kalyana Karnataka region. This needs to be nipped in the bud, lest it spreads to entire North Karnataka region.' The memorandum also accused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Home Minister G Parameshwara of adopting a 'kid-gloves method' in dealing with such elements. 'The pusillanimous attitude of the state government headed by Chief Minister Sri Siddaramaiah and the flip-flop approach of the Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara have been the main contribution for this bloody chapter. Koppal is the latest addition,' it stated. The BJP legislators argued that the NIA probe was necessary to uncover 'the nefarious designs of the jehadi forces operating elsewhere in Karnataka.' They claimed that the killers were 'trained and abetted by sleeper cells with foreign funding' and said only a central investigation could ensure a 'fair, transparent and thorough probe.' Expressing optimism that the Governor would intervene, the BJP said, 'We are optimistic that Your Excellency will give a positive look to our request and prevail upon the state government to hand over the Gavisiddappa Nayak murder case to the National Investigating Agency (NIA) immediately.' The murder of Nayak triggered widespread outrage in Koppal and other parts of north Karnataka, with opposition leaders accusing the Congress government of failing to curb extremist violence. Police have arrested a few suspects and intensified their search for Kolkar, the prime accused, even as pressure mounts for a central investigation.

PM Narendra Modi remembers 'pain' of Partition horrors, calls August 14 ‘tragic chapter of history'
Observing Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid a tribute to the people who endured the "upheaval and pain" of the Partition of India. Sharing an X post, PM Modi called the Partition a 'tragic chapter' of Indian history. "India observes Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, remembering the upheaval and pain endured by countless people during that tragic chapter of our history. It is also a day to honour their ability to face unimaginable loss and still find the strength to start afresh," PM Modi wrote. Amit Shah, in a post on X, said, 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is a day to express condolences by remembering the pain of those who suffered due to the partition of the country and its tragedy. On this day, the Congress party divided the nation into pieces, hurting the pride of Mother India.' He futher noted, 'The partition led to violence, exploitation, and atrocities, and millions of people endured displacement. I offer my heartfelt tribute to all those people. The country will never forget this history and pain of the partition. I offer my tribute to those who lost their lives in this horror of the partition.' Earlier today, Union Health Minister and BJP President Jagat Prakash Nadda called for national unity and 'give a befitting reply to anti-national forces.' Paying tribute to millions who while "enduring agony of displacement", sacrificed their lives, the senior BJP leader said in a post on X, 'The dark day of 1947 reminds us of that cruel event when the citizens of the nation suffered the merciless pain of migration and, enduring inhuman torture, lost their homes, property, and lives.' Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said, 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day: Not a mere part of history, but etched in our national consciousness.' On August 14, India observes 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' to pay tribute to those who lost their lives and were displaced during the country's partition in 1947. India attained its freedom from British rule on 15th August, 1947. Independence Day, which is celebrated on 15th August every year, is a joyous and proud occasion for any nation; however, with the sweetness of freedom came also the trauma of partition. The birth of the newly independent Indian nation was accompanied by violent pangs of partition that left permanent scars on millions of Indians. The partition caused the largest migrations in human history, affecting about 20 million people. Millions of families had to abandon their ancestral villages/towns/cities and were forced to find a new life as refugees. Meanwhile, Railway stations across the country will showcase exhibitions on Thursday to commemorate the sufferings, trauma and displacements experienced by millions of people during the partition of India in 1947. An exhibition has been prepared by the culture ministry for the Observance of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day (PHRD), commemorated every year on August 14. "The Government of India has decided to observe PHRD, 2025 with a series of commemorative activities to be carried out across the country on August 14, 2025. In this regard, the Ministry of Culture has curated an exhibition to showcase the sufferings of the partition-affected people," the railway ministry said in a written communication to all its zones.
