PM Narendra Modi remembers 'pain' of Partition horrors, calls August 14 ‘tragic chapter of history'
Sharing an X post, PM Modi called the Partition a 'tragic chapter' of Indian history. "India observes Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, remembering the upheaval and pain endured by countless people during that tragic chapter of our history. It is also a day to honour their grit...their ability to face unimaginable loss and still find the strength to start afresh," PM Modi wrote.
Amit Shah, in a post on X, said, 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is a day to express condolences by remembering the pain of those who suffered due to the partition of the country and its tragedy. On this day, the Congress party divided the nation into pieces, hurting the pride of Mother India.'
He futher noted, 'The partition led to violence, exploitation, and atrocities, and millions of people endured displacement. I offer my heartfelt tribute to all those people. The country will never forget this history and pain of the partition. I offer my tribute to those who lost their lives in this horror of the partition.'
Earlier today, Union Health Minister and BJP President Jagat Prakash Nadda called for national unity and 'give a befitting reply to anti-national forces.'
Paying tribute to millions who while "enduring agony of displacement", sacrificed their lives, the senior BJP leader said in a post on X, 'The dark day of 1947 reminds us of that cruel event when the citizens of the nation suffered the merciless pain of migration and, enduring inhuman torture, lost their homes, property, and lives.'
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said, 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day: Not a mere part of history, but etched in our national consciousness.'
On August 14, India observes 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' to pay tribute to those who lost their lives and were displaced during the country's partition in 1947.
India attained its freedom from British rule on 15th August, 1947. Independence Day, which is celebrated on 15th August every year, is a joyous and proud occasion for any nation; however, with the sweetness of freedom came also the trauma of partition. The birth of the newly independent Indian nation was accompanied by violent pangs of partition that left permanent scars on millions of Indians.
The partition caused the largest migrations in human history, affecting about 20 million people. Millions of families had to abandon their ancestral villages/towns/cities and were forced to find a new life as refugees.
Meanwhile, Railway stations across the country will showcase exhibitions on Thursday to commemorate the sufferings, trauma and displacements experienced by millions of people during the partition of India in 1947.
An exhibition has been prepared by the culture ministry for the Observance of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day (PHRD), commemorated every year on August 14.
"The Government of India has decided to observe PHRD, 2025 with a series of commemorative activities to be carried out across the country on August 14, 2025. In this regard, the Ministry of Culture has curated an exhibition to showcase the sufferings of the partition-affected people," the railway ministry said in a written communication to all its zones.

ED searches DMK minister Periyasamy's residences
CHENNAI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided the houses, business premises and even the MLA hostel rooms of the state rural development minister I Periyasamy and his family members, including his son, IP Senthilkumar MLA, in Chennai and Dindigul, their hometown. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now DMK and its allies were quick in condemning the ED raids saying they were politically-motivated, and that the DMK would not be cowed down by either the ED or Modi. The ED officials, who did not reveal the background for the searches, engaged a duplicate key maker to open the locked rooms in the official residence of the minister on Greenways Road. Meanwhile, the secretary of the assembly secretariat, K Srinavasan, lodged a complaint with Triplicane police alleging that 'unknown persons' had trespassed into the MLA hostel. City police acknowledged the receipt of the complaint by issuing a community service receipt (CSR). Sources said authorities locked the minister's cabin in the Secretariat in anticipation that ED teams might land there too, but ED sleuths stopped with the residence and the MLA hostel. Simultaneous searches happened in three places in Dindigul: the minister's residence in Durairaj Nagar, Senthilkumar's residence at Vallalar Nagar, and the minister's daughter Indra's residence at Seelapadi. After the information about the raids spread, DMK cadres gathered in front of the houses in large numbers. While the CRPF personnel guarded the premises, state police personnel were deployed in the localities concerned to maintain the law and order situation. In Chennai, the searches were wound up in the evening, but the ED is yet to issue an official statement on the searches. DMK organising secretary R S Bharathi condemned the ED action and said the DMK and its cadress cannot be scared by the assaults of the central agencies. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'We will not be cowed down by the ED or Modi,' he said. MDMK general secretary Vaiko also condemned the ED raids and said that the Union govt was misusing central agencies to target opposition leaders for a political motive and as a means to intimidate and stifle their voices. 'The central govt is using the Income Tax and Enforcement Departments to intimidate its opponents and stifle the voice. That is why the raid is being carried out at the house of Periyasamy. This is strongly condemnable,' he said. It may be noted that the Madras high court had recently reversed the order of the Dindigul trial court, which relieved the DMK leader and his family members in the Rs 2 crore disproportionate assets case. The case pertains to the accumulation of assets to the tune of Rs 2 crore between 2006 and 2010 when Periyasamy was the housing minister. While DVAC filed a chargesheet against Periyasamy, his wife Suseela, and sons Senthilkumar and Prabhu, the ED also registered a money-laundering case based on the DVAC FIR and interrogated Periyasamy in 2022. However, the Dindigul trial court acquitted all of them from the case. But the Madras high court set aside the trial court order in April and ordered a fresh trial.

SC verdict in case of sarpanch election in Haryana is a warning for BJP, says Raut
Nashik: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said the Supreme Court verdict on the counting of votes polled through EVM for the sarpanch post of Haryana's Bavanu Lakhu village, where the SC reversed the presiding officer's decision after three years, indicates that BJP will cease to exist if the counting of EVM votes nationwide is conducted properly. Raut was in Nashik on Friday. Speaking to reporters, he said Mohit Kumar lost the sarpanch election in the village and challenged the results in higher courts until the case reached Supreme Court over about three years. "Mohit Kumar believed in what he claimed, that the presiding officer had transferred the votes meant for him into the name of the opponent. The SC got the votes counted. When we lose elections, we keep crying in the name of govt and election commission. Instead, what we need to do is challenge the decision in the court of law and stand by what we claim. If this happens, this will be a problem for BJP and it will cease to exist," said Raut. "This indicates that Narendra Modi was elected prime minister only through EVM scam. Same is the case with Devendra Fadnavis, who was elected Maharashtra chief minister," Raut added. Raut further pointed out that India is known as the spiritual country. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Swadeshi" call, Raut said he adopted what Congress has been preaching all these years and Modi has started following in Congress's footsteps. On the local body elections, Raut said, "Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS would be contesting elections together even outside Mumbai, like in Nashik, Thane, and Kalyan Dombivali corporations, for which talks are being held." Am working for Nashik, says Bhujbal amid guardian ministership tussle
Nashik: Against the backdrop of Shiv Sena and BJP 's tussle for the Nashik district guardian minister post, NCP's food and civil supplies minister Chhagan Bhujbal says he's dedicated to working for Nashik and had thus declined to go Gondia for the govt programme of flag hoisting on Aug 15. WRD minister Girish Mahajan hoisted the Tricolour at a govt event in Nashik on Friday, while Bhujbal hoisted the national flag at the NCP office in Nashik. The national Tricolour was hoisted by Mahajan at Nashik on Jan 26 (Republic Day) as well, when Bhujbal was not a minister. When questioned by reporters about the appointment of Nashik guardian minister, Mahajan, who represents the Jamner assembly seat in Jalgaon, said, "At present, I am hoisting the flag at Nashik. Step by step, things will develop further." However, he added that the decision on the district guardian minister post rests with govt, and the chief minister and the two deputy chief ministers would take a call on the matter soon. Mahajan had been announced as the guardian minister in Nashik on Jan 17, but govt stayed the decision the following day. Similarly, the appointment of NCP's Aditi Tatkare as guardian minister for Raigad was also stayed. Shiv Sena has staked a claim on both positions as it had them in the previous govt. Responding to Mahajan's remarks on guardian ministership, Bhujbal said, "I am working for the city and the district, and when told to go to Gondia, I declined. Even in the past, I was told to be the guardian minister of Dhule, but even then, my stand was that I am for Nashik and working for Nashik." Without naming anyone, Bhujbal said, "Everybody likes Nashik. But ensure that you do not forget Jalgaon and even the assembly constituency you represent." The NCP has seven MLAs, of which three are ministers, while Shiv Sena has two MLAs, one of whom is a minister. BJP has five MLAs in Nashik district, none of whom is a minister. In Nashik, school education minister Dada Bhuse is a strong contender for the post. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
