Pierce Brosnan hits back at critics who mocked Irish accent on Mobland as show's future hangs in the balance

Scottish Sun26-05-2025

PIERCE BROSNAN has hit back after being widely mocked for struggling to master an Irish accent – despite being born in Ireland.
He got ridiculed for his lilt while playing mobster Conrad Hannigan in Paramount+ show, MobLand.

It contributed to uncertainty over whether the Guy Ritchie-directed thriller, which also stars Helen Mirren and Tom Hardy, would get a second series.
But Pierce told the Radio Times: 'My own accent is very soft. Conrad's accent is a million miles away from me.'
A dialect coach recommended he speak with someone whose voice he could use as inspiration.
Pierce explained: 'I told him I needed a Kerry accent, so he gave me the name of a man and I Googled the guy and that was it.
"It was a Kerry accent. And so, I just gave it full tilt.'
Sadly, reviews were mixed.

MARTIN KEMP might regret his comments about his sex life on Loose Women yesterday.
During a debate on scheduling intimacy, he said: 'I don't think you can.
"If I had to look in my diary and it says Thursday night, I'm going to do it – I don't think it works.
"I even feel under pressure if it's a Sunday morning.'
JOHNNY: C4 LACKS IDENTITY
JOHNNY VAUGHAN has slammed Channel 4 for failing to back the 2022 reboot of The Big Breakfast.
The presenter, who fronted the show from 1997 to 2001, said the channel had lost its identity without a flagship early-morning programme.

He also criticised TV execs' obsession with cooking shows, saying they're full of 'boring, middle-aged, white chefs'.
The 2022 reboot of just four episodes, was hosted by Mo Gilligan and AJ Odudu.
Pierce Brosnan's wife Keely shows off weight loss transformation as they join the cast of MobLand on the red carpet
Johnny told Mo's podcast he watched the reboot and that the show 'just needs time'.
He added: 'It's meant to be an alternative to dreary daily breakfast shows.
'Without it, I think it's like school without an assembly. You've got to say who you are every day. This is what's on.'
I couldn't agree more.

Loose Women star admits 'I always loathed it' as she shares issue with ITV show

Loose Women presenter Carol McGiffin has hit out at ITV bosses over a rule she was forced to follow during her time on the show, which used to make her "shudder" Carol McGiffin, 64, has criticised ITV's Loose Women bosses for their approach to dressing the show's presenters. She expressed her disapproval of the enforced dress codes and how the presenters transitioned from wearing what they wanted, to being instructed on what to wear for coordination. ‌ She was also left concerned about the amount of clothing waste, claiming that some clothes were discarded even if they'd only been worn once. ‌ Carol had two stints on Loose Women, first from 2000 until 2013, and then again from 2018 until 2023. In an article for Best UK, she stated: "I did Loose Women for almost 20 years and the mandated dress codes used to exhaust me. "We went from wearing our own clothes to being bought stuff to adhere to ludicrous wardrobe policies like 'no arms on show', presumably because our ageing biceps were morphing into bingo wings. "I always loathed being 'dressed' or 'styled' as they preferred to call it. You always had to be coordinated up to the eyeballs in nice slacks, wrap dresses or boiler suits. "It used to make me shudder, nearly as much as the insane amount of waste on unimaginable amounts of clothes that had mostly only been worn once", she added. This isn't the first time Carol has spoken out about Loose Women in recent years. In a conversation with Woman's Own last year, she discussed her reasons for leaving and her feelings about the career move. ‌ She said: "I don't regret leaving, I don't fit in there anymore." Her sentiments mirror a previous statement made to OK! Magazine, where she also said: "Someone, somewhere will be offended by absolutely everything. I'd rather not be on a show that panders to that. It's boring – and I won't be told what I can or can't say." Although she has parted ways with the show, Carol remains in contact with some of her former colleagues, having warmer relationships with a select few. She explained: "I'm still very good friends with a lot of the Loose ladies... Denise Welch popped down here with Lincoln [Townley, her husband] last year and we met them for lunch. I've seen Kaye [Adams], Jane [Moore] and Nadia [Sawalha] a few times." Carol added: "Some, I have nothing in common with. As I said to them, 'You're not friends, you're just people I work with, who I really like.' Which horrified them."

They have hosted it together since series eight - with Liam first becoming a host on the show in series three. Liam said: 'I feel like the chemistry between myself, Cherish, Benoit, and latterly Ellie, just gets better and better the more time we spend with each other. I also think the challenges have got a lot harder. 'I know that's a bit rich coming from me, who can't do most of the challenges, but they seem to me to have got more difficult as the years have passed. The chefs are using a lot of cool new techniques as well. I think the show has just become a little more slick as time has gone by.'
