By: Sisca Humphrey Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: City Hall (DBKK) is assessing possible damage to Lintasan Deasoka following a protest by university students over the weekend. The protest, organised by Suara Mahasiswa UMS, involved the burning of posters, which DBKK believes may have included the use of petrol. Mayor Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah said the substance used could have left marks or caused damage to the surface. Although the organisers reportedly cleaned up after the event, DBKK is verifying if the area has been fully restored. A technical team is conducting checks, and Sabin said DBKK will take legal action if any public property was damaged. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Armenia arrests archbishop over alleged coup plot

Archbishop of the Armenian Apostolic Church Bagrat Galstanyan, who is charged with attempting to overthrow the government and destabilizing the state, waves to supporters as Armenia's National Security officers arrive to arrest him in Yerevan, Armenia, June 25, 2025. Melik Baghdasaryan/Photolure via REUTERS LONDON (Reuters) -Armenian authorities on Wednesday arrested a prominent Christian cleric, Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, along with 13 other people and charged them with orchestrating a plot to overthrow the government. In a statement, Armenia's Investigative Committee said it had filed criminal charges against Galstanyan and 15 others whom they said had "acquired the means and tools necessary to commit a terrorist attack and seize power". A total of 14 individuals have been arrested, investigators said, without naming the people. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan wrote on his Telegram channel that the authorities had thwarted a "large and sinister plan by the 'criminal-oligarchic clergy'" to take power in Armenia, a former Soviet republic in the South Caucasus. Galstanyan's arrest is part of a growing confrontation between Pashinyan and the powerful Armenian Apostolic Church, who have traded increasingly bitter allegations in recent weeks ahead of elections scheduled for next year. Some senior clerics have previously called for Pashinyan to step down over Armenia's military defeats against Azerbaijan. Last week, Russian-Armenian billionaire Samvel Karapetyan was detained on accusations of making public calls to usurp power after he accused the government of waging a campaign against the church and said he would act "in his own way" to stop it, according to state agency Armenpress. Lawyers for Karapetyan say the businessman denies wrongdoing. A lawyer for Galstanyan, Sergei Arutyunyan, told journalists on Wednesday that his client was being unfairly criminalised by the government, which he said was seeking to "create a smokescreen and simulate that they've caught a terrorist group." Pashinyan rose to power on a wave of street protests in 2018, but came under heavy domestic pressure after major losses to Azerbaijan in a brief war in 2020. In 2023, Azerbaijan retook the whole of the mountain enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, where ethnic Armenians had enjoyed de facto independence for decades. Tapping into popular anger over defeats and territorial concessions, Galstanyan and his supporters led days of street protests last summer to demand the removal of Pashinyan. Detailing the charges that he faces now, authorities alleged that Galstanyan and associates had recruited over 1,000 people, mainly former soldiers and police officers, to block roads, paralyse traffic, incite violence and shut off the internet, with the goal of destabilising the government and seizing power. The Investigative Committee published audio recordings purporting to show Galstanyan and others discussing plans for the alleged coup attempt, as well as a photograph showing firearms and other weapons they said were discovered during searches. Pashinyan, who faces parliamentary elections in June 2026, has moved towards signing a peace treaty with Azerbaijan, although tensions between the two countries remain high and the number of reported ceasefire violations has surged this year. Armenia PM says foiled ‘sinister' coup plot by senior cleric

YEREVAN: Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Wednesday said security forces had foiled a coup plot involving a senior cleric, amid his escalating standoff with the leadership of the powerful Apostolic Church. Pashinyan has been at loggerheads with senior clerics since 2020, when Catholicos Garegin II began calling for his resignation following Armenia's disastrous military defeat to arch-foe Azerbaijan over the then-disputed Karabakh region. 'Law enforcement officers have foiled a large-scale and sinister plan by the 'criminal-oligarchic clergy' to destabilise the situation in the Republic of Armenia and seize power,' Pashinyan wrote on his Telegram channel. Armenia's Investigative Committee said Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan had 'since November 2024 set himself the goal of changing power by means not permitted by the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia'. Armenia -- the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion in the 4th century -- grants the Apostolic Church special constitutional status and the church wields considerable influence in Armenian society. Last year, Galstanyan -- the leader of opposition movement Sacred Struggle -- accused Pashinyan of ceding territory to Azerbaijan and led mass protests that ultimately failed to topple the prime minister. Home raids The Investigative Committee said that Galstanyan 'with the prior consent of several members of the movement, acquired the necessary means and tools to carry out terrorist acts and seize power'. 'Searches are currently underway at the homes of Archbishop Bagrat and around 30 of his associates,' it added. The website published footage showing Galstanyan leaving his house accompanied by masked police officers, who escorted him into a car and drove him away. 'Evil, listen carefully -- whatever you do, you have very little time left. Hold on, we are coming,' he said, apparently addressing Pashinyan, as a crowd outside shouted 'Nikol is a traitor!' A close associate of the archbishop, MP Garnik Danielyan, told journalists that 'these are actions of a dictatorial regime' and called the accusations against the cleric fabricated. Another opposition figure, Ishkhan Saghatelyan of the nationalist Dashnaktsutyun party, said police raided the homes of members of his party as well. Last week, rights groups and opposition parties said police detained dozens of activists as Pashinyan travelled to Turkey in a landmark bid to improve ties with Armenia's historical rival. 'Liberation' of the Church The loss of the Karabakh region after Azerbaijan's lightning offensive in 2023 has divided Armenia, as its neighbour demands sweeping concessions in exchange for lasting peace. Earlier this month, Pashinyan launched an unprecedented challenge to Garegin II, urging believers to remove him from office. The prime minister called on Armenians to join a 'coordination group' to organise the 'liberation' of the Church and elect a new spiritual leader. He has alleged that Catholicos Garegin II has a child, in a blazing row that prompted fierce criticism from the opposition and has called for Pashinyan to be excommunicated. Galstanyan catapulted to the forefront of Armenian politics in 2024, galvanising mass popular protests and seeking to launch an impeachment process against Pashinyan. The charismatic cleric even temporarily stepped down from his religious post to run for prime minister. But as a dual Armenian-Canadian citizen, he is not eligible to hold the office under Armenian law. Pashinyan's grip on power, boosted by unpopular opposition parties and strong support in parliament, has so far remained unshaken. A former journalist and opposition lawmaker, he came to power after leading street protests that escalated into a peaceful revolution in 2018.
