Professional football is tough, especially in Europe, but it becomes tougher if you are always trying to live up to a famous name. Something similar happened to Cristian, the son of Italian legend Francesco Totti, who has now retired from professional football at the age of 19.
The central midfielder Cristian Totti decided to retire last week after spending eight months without a club. He last played for Olbia Calcio 1905, a football club in Italy's fourth division, Serie D

'I can't say anything… Yes, I'm retiring, I've decided,' Cristian told La Nuova, as per The Sun.
Cristian suffers in legendary Francesco's shadows
In contrast, his father, Totti, had a glittering career as he spent his entire professional career at AS Roma in the Italian Serie A, the top division. Totti made 786 appearances for the Stadio Olimpico-based club and also won the 2006 FIFA World Cup with the Italy national team.
At the club level, the senior Totti won the Serie A once and the Coppa Italia twice. As an attacking midfielder, he was one of the most sought-after in the early 2000s as Real Madrid and Manchester United tried to sign him, but Totti never left Roma, becoming a local icon.

But he wouldn't have imagined in his wildest dreams that his legendary legacy would become such a heavy burden for his son.
Social media leads to shocking decision from Cristian
Explaining Cristian's shocking decision, Italian journalist Paolo Ardovino said that unnecessary scrutiny on social media drove the teenager towards shocking retirement.
'His last experience was in Sardinia, a year ago with Olbia in Serie D,' Ardovino said. 'Few appearances, a lot of media pressure, and even a huge social media controversy over his questionable physical condition.
'Spoiler: it wasn't true; he's always had the normal physique of a normal footballer.'

His former coach, Marco Amelia, shared that Cristian could have had a successful career in the lower Italian leagues, but the pressure of being Totti's son was too much for him.
'I think he would have had a great career ahead of him as a player in Serie C and Serie B,' Amelia said. 'Being Totti's son had an impact on his evaluations.'
This brings an end to his brief career, which started with youth teams of Roma, Frosinone and Rayo Vallecano before playing Serie D football with Avezzano and Olbia.

Cristian will now work with his elder brother, Riccardo, at the Totti Soccer School in Italy. His primary job will be to identify young talent.

McLaren's Rise Faster Than Ferrari's Schumacher Era: Andrea Stella's Bold Claim

Last Updated: McLaren leads the constructors' championship by 268 points, while both their drivers, Piastri and Norris, are vying for the drivers' title. McLaren's recent transformation has been so rapid and effective that its current trajectory may even outpace the legendary Ferrari era under Michael Schumacher, according to team principal Andrea Stella. Speaking on Friday ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Stella reflected on his past with Ferrari and expressed astonishment at the scale and speed of McLaren's resurgence. The Italian, who served as an engineer at Ferrari during Schumacher's dominance in the early 2000s, now leads a McLaren team that is dominating both the drivers' and constructors' championships in 2025. Stella, who joined McLaren in 2015 after more than a decade at Ferrari, emphasized that drawing direct comparisons between eras and teams can be tricky, particularly given his different roles in each organization. However, he admitted that McLaren's current rate of development stands out. 'It's always difficult to compare across seasons," Stella said. 'In this case, we are comparing across teams, and even myself, I was in a very different role, so my field of view, my perspective was very different." During Schumacher's golden run from 2000 to 2004, Ferrari secured five consecutive drivers' titles and six consecutive constructors' championships, with the 2004 season being especially dominant—15 wins from 18 races. McLaren's Dominance in 2025 In stark contrast to their recent struggles, McLaren has surged to the front of the grid in 2025. After finishing fifth in 2022 and fourth in 2023, the team has won 10 of the first 13 races this season and holds a commanding 268-point lead over second-placed Ferrari in the constructors' standings. Their driver duo—Oscar Piastri of Australia and Britain's Lando Norris—are currently locked in a close fight for the drivers' title. Piastri leads Norris by 16 points, while Max Verstappen, the reigning champion and Red Bull ace, trails by a distant 81 points in third place. Despite the commanding lead and consistent performance from his drivers, Stella is unwilling to label the championship battle as a closed contest. 'Definitely not," Stella said when asked about whether Verstappen was out of the Championship race. 'I only agree with mathematics. So once mathematics tells us that's the case, then I'll change my answer." First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Should the deal successfully take place, Liverpool have planned a huge gift for the potential recruit. The club is reportedly ready to vacate the No.14 jersey and hand it to Isak. No.14 and Isak have a long-term connection. The player has worn the number during the entirety of his Newcastle stint. The Swede was a No.14 at Dortmund as well. However, he donned the No.19 at Real Sociedad. More from Football He will most likely wear the No.14 jersey of Liverpool too. But the jersey is not free at the moment. It currently belongs to Federico Chiesa. The Italian arrived with big hopes last summer, but struggled for minutes throughout the season, and hence he is linked to a return to Serie A. Why Isak fancies the No.14 jersey? As Chiesa's future is uncertain, Liverpool are considering giving his number to Isak. Chiesa prefers to wear the No.14 jersey because his idol Thierry Henry used to don the same jersey number when he was active. 'I would probably stay with No.14, yeah,' Isak said. 'I think it's a difficult one because I've been successful with No.14, and it would probably not be an easy decision.' He revealed to Alan Shearer the significance of wearing 14, which may be waiting for him at Liverpool: 'He [Henry] was definitely one player I liked a bit extra. 'Many great players have had number 14, you have [David] Ginola from Newcastle as well. When I signed for Newcastle, out of the numbers that was available, I think 14 was the most iconic one.'
