Adidas, Puma eye running shoe revival as tariff threats loom
The German sneaker makers are renewing their focus on running shoes to drive growth after losing market share in the category to smaller rivals such as Deckers Outdoor-owned Hoka and Roger Federer-backed On Holding. Reviving demand is seen as critical for the companies, whose share prices have been battered in recent months, to cushion the impacts of potential US tariffs on key supply hubs.
Running is 'the most exciting category for growth over the coming quarters as well as this one', said Deutsche Bank analyst Adam Cochrane, pointing to demand from serious runners, casual shoppers in search of comfortable soles and fashion-forward consumers seeking a unique silhouette alike.
Although running has always been an important avenue for innovation across the sportswear market, Bavaria-based giants Puma and Adidas have not focused on the category 'as much as they should have' in the last five years, Cochrane said. Instead, they focused intensely on lifestyle shoes, creating an opening for new running shoe brands such as Hoka.
Puma's shares have fallen 48 per cent to the year, whereas Adidas is down 10 per cent. Puma declined to comment ahead of the publication of its second quarter earnings on Jul 31. Adidas, which is set to report on Jul 30, did not respond to a request for comment.
Rejuvenating its running franchise could help Puma elevate the brand, according to Cochrane. The Nitro line in particular, which was released in 2021 and features soles injected with nitrogen gas for added bounce, could be at the heart of new chief executive officer Arthur Hoeld's strategy.

Adidas cannot ignore running, either. Interest for franchises including its popular Terrace line is waning, while other retro models such as Superstar and SL 72 lack momentum, a Barclays analysis of Google Trends data shows. Running shoe lines such as the adizero and EVO SL, however, show 'strong momentum', according to Barclays analyst Carole Madjo. Those offerings could in turn could appeal to lifestyle shoppers and gain traction outside of athlete circles.
Record-breaking performances by athletes donning Adidas gear and engagement on the company's Instagram account dedicated to running are boosting the brand's relevance in the running segment, which could provide the next leg of growth and lift margins, Cochrane said. Adidas is likely to upgrade its profit target when it reports later this month, he added.
US rival Nike has faced similar headwinds. The company signalled its sales decline hit bottom after bringing back longtime executive Elliott Hill as CEO to turn around the brand by improving relationships with retailers, investing in product development and placing a renewed focus on sports after an overemphasis on lifestyle footwear.
Running has performed especially strongly for Nike, with its Vomero shoes seeing growth across all geographies, according to Citigroup analyst Monique Pollard.
Companies such as Nike and Adidas could also benefit from China's National Fitness Plan, which aims to promote exercise and could lift sportswear sales in the country, according to Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Catherine Lim and Trini Tan. 'These companies could sell pricier gear and increase sponsorship of athletic events to capture rising per-capita spending on sportswear in China,' they wrote in a note.
Tariff risk
Tariffs continue to loom over the outlook for sportswear giants, raising costs as they adjust supply chains. A recent trade deal with Vietnam, a critical production hub for those companies, resulted in a higher-than-expected 20 per cent levy on goods from the country, which is likely to force Nike to hike its prices, BI's Poonam Goyal and Sydney Goodman said.
Further plans by US President Donald Trump to impose a 36 per cent tariff rate on Cambodia and Thailand, as well as a 40 per cent levy on Laos, all key supplier countries to the fashion industry, sent Puma and Adidas shares lower when announced. The new duties are set to come into effect on Aug 1.
Doubling down on running shoes could prove a smart bet for the future. 'Once the tariffs are confirmed, there will be a price and profit impact, but once digested, we will look back at sales growth to drive earnings and running will be an important part of that,' Cochrane said.
'As the bigger brands start to get more traction in running, it will help improve investor sentiment on these names.' BLOOMBERG

SINGAPORE – The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has defended its member and former vice-president Ng Ser Miang following allegations of potential conflicts of interest in e-sports initiatives and related business activities. The defence comes in response to a complaint reported by German investigative news outlet Sport & Politics on Aug 12, alleging the veteran sports administrator to have 'mixed his many positions with family business in several respects in connection with e-sports, the Olympic Esports Week and the Olympic Esports Games'. In response to queries from The Straits Times, an IOC spokesperson said: 'For many years, all IOC members have been required to declare their interests in companies, sports organisations and not-for-profit entities. This is to avoid any actual or perceived risk of conflict of interest when the IOC engages with any third party. 'Mr Ser Miang Ng, like all IOC members, has fulfilled his obligations. Therefore, the allegations made in this complaint are unfounded. There is no basis whatsoever to these claims, since there is full transparency through the IOC Declaration of Interests Form.' The report by Sport & Politics detailed a complaint submitted to the IOC Ethics Commission against the 76-year-old, who has been an IOC member since 1998 and served two terms as vice-president from 2009 to 2013 and 2020 to 2024. Filed on June 26 by London law firm Joseph Hage Aaronson & Bremen on behalf of a client whose identity was not disclosed, it alleges that Ng used his multiple positions within Olympic and e-sports committees, as well as national and international sporting federations, to influence the selection of e-sports games for upcoming Olympic events. It highlighted the inclusion of virtual taekwondo at the Olympic Esports Week held in June 2023 in Singapore, noting the game was made and owned by Refract Technologies, where Ng's son Chong Geng serves as a director. The IOC spokesperson stressed that Ng had not been directly involved in the development of e-sports with the organisation until recently, elaborating that the process has been led by the IOC Esports Commission, of which he has never been a member. The Esports Commission oversaw the Olympic Virtual Series 2021 and the Olympic Esports Series 2023, which culminated in the Olympic Esports Week (OEW) in Singapore. The IOC spokesperson said: 'All the key decisions regarding the Olympic Virtual Series 2021 and the Olympic Esports Series 2023, including the selection of the game titles, were taken by the IOC Executive Board (EB) based on proposals from the Olympic Esports Commission and in cooperation with the relevant IOC departments.' The complaint also noted Ng's role in the establishment of the Olympic Esports Games, with the inaugural edition to be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2027. Ng chairs a six-member steering committee for the event, which has been set up to define which games will be part of the maiden Esports Olympics. The IOC spokesperson said: 'Recently, Mr Ng was appointed as chair of a joint committee of the IOC and the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee (SOPC) to steer the Olympic Esports Games, precisely because his expertise was fully known and appreciated. 'His connections to the industry were declared in full transparency in the IOC Declaration of Interests Form. While the steering committee is working to prepare the decision on which games will be included in the Olympic Esports Games, the final decision will be made by the IOC EB and/or the IOC Session.' Stressing that the organisation has 'full confidence' in Ng to further develop the Olympic Esports Project, the spokesperson added: 'The IOC confirms that IOC Member Mr Ser Miang Ng has acted in full conformity with the Olympic Charter, and there is no evidence to prove the contrary.' Ng, who has worn many hats in various sporting bodies, was fined €1,000 (S$1,400) in 2023 and served with an official warning after being found guilty of interfering in a World Sailing election. The governing body said that Ng, who was vice-president of the International Sailing Federation (World Sailing's predecessor) from 1994 to 1998, and former World Sailing Ethics Commission chairman Dieter Neupert had been found guilty of failing to act with integrity and interfering in the 2020 election. But Ng told ST then that he rejects any allegations and sanctions made against him by World Sailing.

Defending champions Al-Ahli set for Firmino reunion in Asian Champions League

Firmino was instrumental in the Jeddah-based outfit lifting the continental title for the first time in May when he inspired Al-Ahli to a 2-0 win over Japan's Kawasaki Frontale in the final before leaving the club in July. The Brazilian has since joined the Qatar Stars League champions and the two clubs have been drawn to face one another in Doha during the eight-match league phase of the competition, which will kick off on Sept. 15. The tournament will again adopt the Swiss league format for the opening round after its introduction last season, with the 24 participants divided into 12-team groups for both west and east Asia. The first eight finishers on each side of the Asian confederation will progress to the last 16, which will be played in March with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final to be held in Saudi Arabia from April 17 to 25. Five new hotshots to watch out for in the new Premier League season
[SINGAPORE] Eighty-three days after a dominant Liverpool lifted the English Premier League (EPL) trophy on the final day of last season, the 20 teams in England's top football division are ready to do battle afresh this weekend. For the next nine months, a total of 380 matches will be played at 20 stadiums. Liverpool, which drew level with Manchester United with a record-equalling 20th top-flight championship, are the bookies' favourites to retain the title. Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea are likely to lead the chasing pack. The glamour fixture to look out for in the opening weekend takes place on Sunday (11.30 pm kickoff, Singapore time) when Manchester United welcome last season's runners-up Arsenal to a sold-out Old Trafford. As expected, most of the EPL teams have splashed the cash during the transfer window this summer and they are ready to trot out their flashy new arrivals. Benjamin Sesko (Manchester United) An embarrassing 15th-place finish and the failure to qualify for a European tournament did not stop Manchester United from attracting some of the sport's top talent. The Red Devils broke the bank to secure the signature of Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko from German club RB Leipzig, with the 22-year-old now on a five-year deal worth up to £73.7 million. United's director of football Jason Wilcox heaped on the praise for Sesko, describing him as an 'exceptional young talent in world football' who has electrifying pace and the ability to physically dominate defenders. Sesko – who scored 13 times in the Bundesliga last season – is the fourth summer signing for United, and he will link up with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbuemo and Diego Leon. Rayan Cherki (Manchester City) There is a new No 10 at Manchester City, and it is French international Rayan Cherki who has taken over the iconic jersey after the departure of Jack Grealish to Everton. The 21-year-old midfielder joined City from Lyon following a £30.5 million transfer, and he is arguably the club's most exciting summer signing. He is a wizard with the ball and able to dribble past opponents with ease. His passing ability has been lauded by pundits, and he also has the ability to score spectacular goals. With injured midfielder Rodri still sidelined until September, Cherki will likely be heavily involved in manager Pep Guardiola's plans in the first few weeks of the season. He will have plenty of game time as he looks to help his new team to bounce back from the disappointment of a first trophyless season since 2016/17.
