"Gogoi accusing BJP of diluting tribal autonomy is totally baseless": Assam Assembly Deputy Speaker
He said that the Congress party had used the tribal people, minority community and Adivasi tea tribe people as their vote banks for years after years, but did nothing for the welfare and development of these people.
Continuing his attacks, Momin said that the Congress party has always done politics with the tribal people and minority people of Assam, and the people of the state will give a befitting reply to Congress in the upcoming 2026 assembly polls.
His remarks came after Congress MP and Assam Pradesh Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi accused the BJP-led Assam Government of eroding tribal autonomy under the current government in the state.
'Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the tribal area is now prospering. All-round development is taking place whether in Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao or Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and other tribal autonomous councils. For the first time, the tribal people have tasted the development by their own government,' Numal Momin told ANI.
He further said that the Congress had ruled for more than 60 years in Assam, but at that time, the Congress party didn't think about the tribal people.
Refuting Gogoi's allegations, Momin said that his accusing the BJP of diluting the tribal autonomy is 'totally baseless.'
The BJP leader said, 'During the Congress regime, terrorism and atrocities against the tribal people were there in BTR, Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong. Now, the BJP government has been able to bring peace and development together. Today, the people are happy and actively involved in the government's development projects. So now, university, medical college, central college and many more development works like stadiums, road communication, health sector have been done in tribal people-dominated areas in the state. But he (Gaurav Gogoi, Assam Congress President) is accusing the BJP of diluting the tribal autonomy, which is baseless...'
The Deputy Speaker further requested Assam Congress chief Gogoi to compare his party's and the BJP's government policy for the tribal areas.
'I want to request that the State Congress chief should see retrospectively what they did in these tribal areas and what we are doing at present. If he compares, then I don't think that he will dare to speak such kinds of things again and accuse this government. The people of BTR, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao are very happy under the dynamic and development-oriented Prime Minister Narendra Modi and our Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma. When peace prevails in this area and development is going on in a very rapid way, at that time, he accused the government it being very unfortunate. The people will give a befitting reply in the upcoming 2026 assembly election,' Momin stated.
The Deputy Speaker said that for years, Congress used tribal people, the Muslim minority community, the Christian minority community, and Adivasi tea tribes as their vote banks.
'They are using them in the election with a long list of promises, but they couldn't fulfil. Again, in the time of the election, they distributed a little bit of money and alcohol, and they purchased the common people's vote and formed the government year after year. Now people really understand the Congress's policy, and they defeated Congress twice in Assam, and for the third consecutive time, people are going to defeat Congress in the 2026 election. They are happy with the current government,' Numal Momin asserted.
Speaking about the eviction drive in the state, he said that this is done to evict the illegal Bangladeshi Muslims who occupied our land, religious land, agricultural land, and forest land.
He said, 'Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is doing good work for the people of Assam, the work which is very much needed in demand of us. People are really loving him. Now, the Congress is nervous; they don't have any issues for the 2026 assembly election. That's why they are accusing here and there, but people are well-versed in the Congress regime. In 2026, people will give their verdict, and Congress will get the answer at that time.' (ANI)

Shah sets target of 20k seats, 25% vote share for NDA in local body polls
Thiruvananthapuram: Union home minister Amit Shah on Saturday urged BJP members in the state to work hard to ensure the NDA wins over 20,000 seats and secures 25% of the votes in the upcoming local body elections. The state has a total of 23,612 wards across its local self-govt institutions, including grama panchayats, block panchayats, district panchayats, municipalities and corporations. Addressing party workers at a ward-level leadership meet at Putharikandam Maidan, Shah said BJP had established its presence in all booths in Kerala and would form the govt in the state after 2026 assembly election. "If the people of Kerala want development, they have only one choice — the BJP. They should end the practice of alternating between LDF and UDF," Shah said. He inaugurated the leadership meet after opening the new BJP state office. Shah said BJP's vote share had risen from 11% in 2014 to 16% in 2019, and it touched 20% in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Both LDF and UDF had been involved in corruption whenever they were in power, while the NDA govt led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not faced any corruption allegation. He said the 2020 gold smuggling case was the biggest corruption scam ever sponsored by a state govt in the country. "A developed India is not possible unless south Indian states develop. And Kerala's development is not possible without BJP," he said, adding that the party would wrest power in Tamil Nadu also in the upcoming assembly election. Shah asserted that BJP was not a north Indian party as claimed by political opponents. "BJP won and formed the govt in Assam. BJP wrested power from CPM in Tripura. It also came to power in Odisha. Opponents always used to dismiss BJP's efforts to form govt in these states, but we proved them wrong. After the 2026 assembly election, the BJP-led NDA would form govt in Kerala too," he said. Shah alleged that under LDF and UDF govts, Kerala had become a hub of corruption, appeasement, violence and anti-national activities. "The CPM-led LDF govt did nothing to stop the emergence of Popular Front of India (PFI) as an anti-national force. It was the Modi govt that banned PFI when it started making its presence in other states, posing a threat to the country. PFI is still alive in Kerala in different forms. CPM must clarify what action the LDF govt has taken against this communal terror group," he said. Shah said BJP placed the welfare of the country above the interests of its own cadre, but the focus for CPM was always on the welfare of its own cadre. PM Modi has declared adherence to three principles: corruption-free governance, non-discriminatory governance and the end of vote-bank politics, he said, adding that Kerala can progress only by following the path laid down by Modi and his govt.

Operation Sindoor proved India's readiness; exposed inefficiency of Pak's Chinese military gear: US warfare expert
. NEW DELHI: Operation Sindoor , India's military response to the Pahalgam terror attack , sent a strong message to the world — not just about capability, but about intent, says John Spencer, a leading expert on modern warfare. Speaking to ANI, Spencer — who chairs Urban Warfare Studies at the Modern War Institute in New York — said India showed it could strike with precision and restraint. 'This was not just about targeting terrorists. It was also a demonstration of India's indigenous military systems, tested against Chinese-made weapons used by Pakistan,' he said. India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, days after 26 civilians were killed in a terror attack in Pahalgam. Strikes were carried out on terror infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). India also repelled Pakistani military attempts that followed and targeted their airbases. The conflict de-escalated after a call from Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) to the Indian side. According to Spencer, Pakistan, being heavily equipped with Chinese military systems, became a kind of 'testing ground' for Beijing's defence technology. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo 'China uses Pakistan as a lab. And this was a chance for India to show what its homegrown defence tech can do,' he explained. He added that the world — including adversaries like China — was watching closely. 'Wars are the ultimate test. It's not about what you say, but what satellite footage and strike videos actually show.' Spencer also stressed the difference between a full-scale war and an operation like Sindoor. 'This had a clear trigger and a clear objective. It wasn't open-ended. But it does sit within a larger pattern — where countries use proxies, borders, and pressure tactics to weaken neighbours.' On future conflict risks, Spencer said wars are unpredictable, but preparation matters. 'You can't predict when the next war will break out. But you can prepare. And India has been preparing — from reforms in the military to tech innovations and doctrine changes.' He added that his interest in Operation Sindoor wasn't just about the four days of strikes — but about India's build-up over the past decade. On Pakistan's use of Chinese weaponry, Spencer said the strikes may lead to a rethink in Islamabad. 'If something you bought doesn't perform well, you either go back to the seller or look elsewhere. But Pakistan has money problems, and that limits their choices.' "Every Indian strike was a message not just to Pakistan, but to the world" says John Spencer He also pointed to "user error" as a possible factor in how poorly some systems performed. 'They want advanced systems, but affordability is a challenge. Still, they'll be forced to look for alternatives.' Spencer concluded that India's show of preparedness and capability during Operation Sindoor was a lesson in deterrence — one that the world, including its adversaries, took note of.

Centre led by ‘RRR govt': Priyank Kharge takes jibe at BJP
Gadag: Minister Priyank Kharge on Saturday took a sharp dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing the BJP-led central government of failing to introduce any original development programmes over the past 11 years. 'Modi has merely renamed schemes launched during the UPA government's tenure to mislead the people of the country,' he was speaking at the 'Yuva Dhwani' convention in Gadag on Saturday. Kharge said, 'The government at the centre is nothing but an 'RRR government'-- Rename, Repackage, Re-launch. Schemes like Digital India, Skill India, Swachh Bharat, and Health Insurance, which the BJP touts as their achievements, were all conceptualised and launched during the UPA regime,' he ridiculed the BJP's portrayal of pre-2014 India, saying, 'It's as if the people of India were living in caves without any amenities before Modi became Prime Minister. Despite introducing nothing new, Modi comes up with a fresh slogan every six months.'Kharge also challenged the credibility of the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative, saying, 'I still do not understand what Atmanirbhar Bharat actually means. If they can show me even one functioning smart city in the country, I will resign.'Poor diplomatic tiesContinuing his attack, Kharge claimed, 'Prime Minister Modi identifies himself as a brand. Depending on the occasion, he portrays himself as a chaiwala (tea seller), pradhan sevak (chief servant), chowkidar (watchman), Hindu Hriday Samrat (Emperor of Hindu Hearts), Iron Man and now, a Vishwaguru. But during the conflict between India and Pakistan, not a single nation stood by India. This reflects the poor diplomatic ties maintained by Modi's government.'He said, 'Over the past 11 years, the word 'anti-national' has repeatedly echoed in our ears. 'If anyone speaks against the ideology of the BJP or the RSS and their leaders, they are labelled as anti-national. Their contribution to the freedom struggle, the wars that followed, and the nation-building process is zero. They call Godse a patriot. If that is so, then who is Gandhi?' he further added, 'For the BJP, Savarkar is the ideological guru. When I asked in the Assembly who conferred upon him the title 'Veer', BJP members attacked me and called me anti-national. The truth is, Savarkar gave that title to himself.'Kharge also raised historical facts, saying, 'The Cellular Jail in Andaman had 698 cells and operated for 33 years. Over 80,000 freedom fighters were imprisoned there, and only three wrote mercy petitions. 'One of them was Savarkar, who did so six times. He even accepted a British pension of Rs 60 per month for 18 years. When these facts are questioned, they label us as traitors,' he added.
