Retail inflation likely fell to a record low of 1.4% in July: Mint poll
India's retail inflation likely fell to a record low in July due to a sustained decline in food inflation, according to a Mint poll. The inflation measured by the current consumer price index (CPI) is estimated to further fall to 1.4% in July from 2.1% in the previous month, according to the poll of 22 economists. That would mean the lowest since January 2014 under the currentCPI series, with 2012 as the base year. However, economists said this could mark the lowest point in the declining streak and expect inflation to go up from August onward. So far, the continued statistical effect of a favourable base effect, especially for food, has helped in pulling inflation polled by Mint projected CPI inflation in the range of 1.1-1.8%. The official data is scheduled to be released on 12 August. 'A sharper deflation in the 'food and beverage' category was the main driver (for headline inflation), benefiting from favourable base effects and a sustained month-on-month decline in the prices of pulses," said Dhiraj Nim, economist at ANZ Bank. Food, which constitutes nearly 40% of the overall inflation basket, has been the primary factor pulling headline inflation down. In June, food inflation was -1.1% and food and beverages inflation was -0.2%. These groups are expected to remain in the deflation zone in July as well. However, inflation is expected to move upward from August, aligning itself broadly with the Reserve Bank of India's estimates, economists said. 'This is likely to be the trough, with a subsequent upmove broadly in line with the quarterly estimates provided by the Monetary Policy Committee," said Aditi Nayar, chief economist atIcra faster-than-expected decline in inflation, with a nine-month-long declining streak, led to lower projections by the central bank last week. The full-year inflation projection was cut by 60 basis points to 3.1%, while the estimate for the current quarter was lowered by 130 basis points to 2.1%.However, despite the cuts, the rate-setting panel left the policy repo rate unchanged due to the larger-than-expected cut of 50 basis points in June and the possibility of inflation rising above the medium-term aim of 4.0% in the last quarter of the current financial year.'With growth holding firm and inflation expected to rise, we do not expect further rate cuts in this cycle unless downside risks to growth materialize," said CareEdge in a note last week.

INDIA bloc MPs to march from Parliament to Election Commission tomorrow over ‘vote chori' claims
MPs from the INDIA bloc, led by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, will march from Parliament to the Election Commission on Monday to protest what they allege is 'vote chori' (vote theft) through the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition INDIA bloc MPs protest in Parliament against the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar during the Monsoon Session. (PTI File) Sources said the alliance's floor leaders are also expected to meet the Election Commissioners to formally register their objections. The march is expected to begin from Parliament at around 11.30 am. The Opposition's protest comes days after Rahul Gandhi accused the Election Commission of colluding with the BJP, citing a Congress analysis of the Mahadevapura assembly seat in Karnataka, where he alleged that nearly one lakh votes were 'stolen'. Earlier, Rahul Gandhi reiterated his allegations of 'vote chori' (vote theft) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, stressing that a 'clean' voter roll is essential for free and fair polls. Linking the issue to a broader fight to 'protect' democracy, the Congress MP said on X, 'Vote chori is an attack on the foundational idea of 'one man, one vote'. A clean voter roll is imperative for free and fair elections. Our demand from the EC is clear — be transparent and release digital voter rolls so that people and parties can audit them. This fight is to protect our democracy.' Congress general secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal likened the fight against alleged voter list manipulation to a 'do-or-die' mission to save Indian democracy, and said the party will discuss its next steps in the nationwide campaign at an upcoming meeting. 'Just as Bapu gave us the 'Do or Die' call during the Quit India movement, we today must embark upon a similar do-or-die mission to save Indian democracy,' Venugopal wrote on X. He said that the party will hold a meeting of its general secretaries, in-charges, and frontal organisation heads on August 11, chaired by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, to plan the next phase of its nationwide campaign against alleged voter list manipulation and election fraud.

Kharge to host dinner for INDIA bloc MPs amid 'poll fraud', SIR row
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will host a dinner for MPs of the INDIA bloc on Monday, sources said, as the opposition alliance intensifies its efforts to present a united front against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and alleged large-scale rigging in polls. According to sources, Kharge will host the dinner at Taj Palace in Chanakyapuri, which is likely to be attended by the INDIA bloc MPs. The move follows a show of opposition unity just days after the INDIA bloc leaders gathered for a dinner meeting at the residence of the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi. At the meeting, the Opposition leaders pledged to fight against the electoral roll revision in Bihar and what they have termed the BJP-Election Commission's "vote chori" model. Several leaders from across 25 parties attended the meeting, including Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, NCP-SP chief Sharad Pawar, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, RJD's Tejashwi Yadav, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, TMC's Abhishek Banerjee, DMK leaders Tiruchi Siva and T.R. Baalu, CPI's D. Raja, CPI(M) leader M.A. Baby, MNM chief Kamal Haasan, and CPI(ML) leader Dipankar Bhattacharya. During the meeting, Rahul Gandhi made a detailed presentation on the alleged "vote chori" being carried out by the BJP with the support of the Election Commission. According to Congress, Gandhi explained the entire "game" of how elections were being "rigged" through this alleged collusion. "A united front against electoral manipulation! We are committed to protecting democracy and will save it from being destroyed at all costs," Congress posted on X. At a press conference earlier, Gandhi had unveiled what he called explosive evidence of a "huge criminal fraud" in the electoral process, alleging deep collusion between the BJP and the Election Commission.
