DK Shivakumar says Nandini will get space in 8 metro stations, amid political row over Amul outlets in Bengaluru
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Wednesday sought to calm rising criticism over the presence of Amul kiosks in Bengaluru's Namma Metro stations, assuring that Karnataka's homegrown dairy brand, Nandini, will be given space in eight locations across the metro network.

Shivakumar clarified that the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) had floated tenders for retail spaces at 10 metro stations, but only Amul—managed by Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd—had submitted applications. He pointed out that even the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), which owns the Nandini brand, had not come forward during the tender process.
'Except Amul, no other entity applied for the outlets — not even KMF. Now, we've directed KMF to participate and apply for the remaining spots. Out of the 10 locations, Amul secured space through a global tender process and has already opened stores at two stations. It wouldn't be right to shut them down now. But I've instructed that Nandini outlets be established at the remaining eight stations,' Shivakumar said, addressing the backlash.

BMRCL had floated tenders for setting up kiosks at the following metro stations: Pattandur Agrahara, Indiranagar, Benniganahalli, Byappanahalli, Trinity, Sir M Visvesvaraya, Nadaprabhu Kempegowda (Majestic), National College, Jayanagar, and Banashankari.
The issue has triggered political tension, with opposition BJP leaders accusing the Congress government of sidelining the Nandini brand in favour of Gujarat-based Amul. Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan slammed the state government on social media, calling it a betrayal of Karnataka's dairy farmers.
'In the run-up to the 2023 Assembly polls, Congress had falsely accused BJP of favouring outsiders. But now, under their own watch, they've allowed Amul kiosks at 10 metro stations, pushing aside Nandini. This is nothing but hypocrisy,' Mohan posted on X

We have instructed KMF to submit its application to BMRCL. KMF will open Nandini outlets in 8 metro stations. Amul has already opened its outlets in two metro stations. It is not appropriate to close down the existing outlets. We have informed the BMRCL to allow KMF to open Nandi outlets in the remaining 8 metro stations,' he added. DK Shivakumar said that he had a meeting with the MLAs on the party organisation and Greater Bengaluru Municipal Corporation elections. He mentioned that the party leaders have discussed forming corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority. The family has run out of money and do not see a way to return. Ali Mohammad has requested the Indian government to help evacuate the Indians stranded there -- the way Indians from Ukraine were brought home. Shia religious leader Maulana Yasoob Abbas has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and requested that arrangements be made to bring home the stranded Indians.

Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel The Delhi High Court has restrained the infringement of the trademark of Swedish vehicle manufacturer, Volvo In an order dated May 30, Justice Amit Bansal further restrained two transporters from the unauthorised use of the mark for their bus Swedish vehicle maker filed a plea seeking a permanent injunction against the defendants from infringing its Volvo defendants, the plea alleged, were Udaipur-based Ganesh Motor Body Repairs, a manufacturer and fabricator that made buses nearly identical or deceptively similar to the original Volvo buses, Rishabh Bus Private Limited in Delhi, which purchased buses from the maker and lured customers for its inter-city bus services by advertising its fleet of buses as Volvo said another transporter, the Bahraich-based Shanti Travels, used a motif on its grille which was nearly identical to its its case, the Swedish company said its " iconic grille slash trademark " was of particular significance as its placement on the grille of any bus or other automobile signified that the automobile was an originally a Volvo."The defendants, by manufacturing, using, displaying, and advertising lookalikes of the plaintiffs' well-known products, are attempting to create an unauthorised association with the plaintiffs (Volvo group), and target customers and deceive them to believe that the plaintiffs have launched an affordable new range of products," the plea court held that the defendants had dishonestly copied and created fake, replica or counterfeit products of the plaintiffs' famous products bearing the Volvo trademarks."The defendants' attempt to use the suit trademarks is nothing but a mala fide attempt to encash on the plaintiffs' rights and amount to infringement and passing off of the suit trademarks, with a sole intention of riding piggyback on the plaintiffs' immense reputation and goodwill to achieve immense publicity, marketing and business gains," the court order found a prima facie case in their favour of the Swedish maker for an ad-interim injunction."If the actions of the defendants remain unrestrained, then the practice of using the infringing grille slash trademarks on any bus will become rampant and the exclusivity associated with the plaintiffs' buses will vanish over time," it court, as a result, restrained the defendants and their agents from infringing the Volvo mark in any manner by physically using it on buses or using it for travel services till October 9, the next date of hearing.
