Why food recalls are increasing
E.Coli, metal and even a dead bat have been found in recalled food. In fact, food recalls are increasing. Yet, that might actually be a good sign. Here's why.

Some ready-to-eat meals sold at Walmart and Kroger are being recalled after multiple deaths and more than a dozen illnesses reported across 13 states due to listeria poisoning, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.
FreshRealm in San Clemente, Calif., Montezuma, Ga., and Indianapolis, Ind., is recalling certain chicken fettuccine alfredo products that may contain an outbreak strain of listeria monocytogenes contamination which can cause listeriosis, or listeria poisoning.
The ready-to-eat products were shipped to Kroger and Walmart retail locations across the U.S.

17 people sickened in 13 states, 3 deaths
The FDA reported the agency and public health partners are investigating a listeria outbreak in connection to the prepared meals and that as of June 17, 2025, the outbreak had sickened 17 people in 13 states.
As of that same date, there have been at least three reported deaths associated with the outbreak.
"The outbreak strain of 'LM' was isolated from ill people on dates ranging from August 2024 – May 2025," the federal health agency reported.

Listeria poisoning symptoms
Listeria poisoning is a foodborne bacterial infection most commonly caused by the bacterium listeria monocytogenes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is considered a serious condition and can be dangerous or life-threatening, especially to older adults, people with weak immune systems, and pregnant women.
Symptoms include, per the CDC:
Fever
Muscle aches
Headache
Stiff neck
Confusion
Loss of balance
Convulsions
Diarrhea
Other gastrointestinal symptoms
Miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery and/or life-threatening infection of newborn infants
Death
People in higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care.
Toss affected ready-to-eat meals out, USDA says
For consumers who bought the item and froze it, the USDA said to throw it away.

Why this matters Cesium-137 is a radioactive isotope that can enter the food supply through environmental contamination, including fallout from nuclear accidents such as Chernobyl and at Fukushima, Japan. While high doses can cause acute radiation syndrome, the FDA's concern here is repeated, low-level exposure through contaminated food, which over time can damage DNA and raise cancer risk. This is not a common hazard in U.S. seafood. The flagged shrimp was imported from a firm in Indonesia, and the FDA placed it under an Import Alert, which allows officials to detain shipments without physically inspecting every lot if there's evidence that the food was prepared or stored in conditions that could make it unsafe. How the FDA enforces import alerts When a firm is added to the FDA's Red List under an import alert, its shipments can be held at the border without physicalexamination. To be removed, the company must show it has identified and fixed the root cause of the contamination. That may include submitting a hazard analysis plan, proof of corrective actions, and, in some cases, undergoing a third-party or FDA inspection of the facility. The process is designed to prevent repeated violations, ensuring future imports are not adulterated. Until that happens, food from firms on the Red List stays blocked from entry into the United States. What consumers should do If you purchased this shrimp, the FDA advises that you should not eat it. The safest thing to do is to throw it away or return it to Walmart for a refund. Anyone who is feeling symptoms or has concerns about possible exposure should reach out to their doctor or health care provider. FDA warning: Don't eat these potentially radioactive shrimp sold at Walmart
You might want to think twice about buying this brand of shrimp next time you're shopping at Walmart. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning to consumers about eating, selling or serving select brands of Great Value frozen raw shrimp due to contamination with a radioactive isotope. U.S. Customs and Border Protection alerted the FDA about the radioactive isotope, Cesium-137, after it was found in shipping containers at four U.S. seaports, according to the FDA. Here's what you need to know about the products that are affected and whether a recall will be imminent. What contaminated shrimp is the FDA warning consumers about? The Frozen Raw Ez Peel Tail-On Farm-Raised White Vannamei Shrimp in 2-pound bags distributed by Indonesia's BMS Foods tested positive for the contamination. The FDA is recommending a recall on certain BMS shrimp products even if they did not test positive. While a recall hasn't been conducted yet, the FDA is working with distributors and retailers 'to recommend' a recall. Instead, the agency is asking customers, distributors and retailers to throw the shrimp away. The FDA also says, 'If you suspect you have been exposed to elevated levels of cesium, talk to your healthcare provider.' Consuming food or water contaminated with Cs-137 in low doses over an extended period of time can create an elevated risk of cancer due to a breakdown in DNA in the body's living cells, according to the FDA.
