Walmart and Kroger chicken products recalled after three listeria deaths

A listeria outbreak that has reached 13 states and involves three deaths has been linked to chicken Alfredo dishes recalled from Walmart and Kroger, the nation's two largest grocery sellers. Here's what was announced Tuesday night by the USDA's Food Safety Inspection Service: What's been recalled from Kroger and Walmart? From Walmart stores, manufacturer FreshRealm recalled Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Fettuccine in 12.3-ounce trays with a best by date on or before 6/26/2025 and 32.8-ounce trays with a best by date on or before 6/27/2025. Marketside is one of Walmart's store brands. FreshRealm also yanked Home Chef Heat & Eat Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo in 12.5-ounce trays with a best by date on or before 6/19/2025. Home Chef is a Kroger's meal delivery service, although the recall notice said the meals went to retail stores nationwide. The dishes have 'EST. P-50784' 'EST. P-47770' or 'EST. P-47718' on the packaging representing FreshRealm's facilities in Indianapolis and San Clemente, California. What's going on with the listeria outbreak? The USDA says the the strain of listeria in this outbreak was found in people as far back as August. In March, the same strain was found by the USDA's Food Safety Inspection Service at a FreshRealm establishment in a chicken fettuccine Alfredo sample. That lot didn't reach retailers, USDA-FSIS said. 'FSIS also used purchase records from two ill people to trace purchased chicken fettuccine Alfredo products to FreshRealm establishments,' the USDA said. 'An additional two ill people verbally described chicken fettuccine Alfredo products they purchased. FSIS identified products produced by FreshRealm that matched the descriptions during follow-up at the retail stores where they shopped.' What's listeria? Listeria is a much less common foodborne illness than salmonella, sickening 1,600 per year in the United States as opposed to salmonella's 1.35 million, but it's far more deadly. The CDC credits about 260 deaths per year to listeria. Newborns, adults over 65 and those with damaged immune systems are most likely to get the worst of listeria. In pregnant women, it can cause miscarriages and stillbirths. Most people will feel like they have the flu (fever, headaches, feeling tired, achy). Seizures are possible. What should you do now? Return the recalled Chicken Alfredo dishes to the store for a refund. If you can't do that, throw them in the garbage deep enough to prevent pets from getting into them and take out the garbage. Clean and sanitize any surface the food touched. Direct questions about this recall to FreshRealm at 888-244-1562.

FreshRealm Voluntarily Recalls Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo Meals Due to Possible Listeria Contamination

LANCASTER, Texas, June 18, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — FreshRealm, Inc. has initiated a voluntary recall of certain chicken fettuccine alfredo products sold at Walmart and Kroger during the ongoing investigation of the potential of the product containing Listeria monocytogenes. The meals are sold nationwide at Walmart, under the Marketside brand and Kroger, under the Home Chef brand. The following products are subject to recall: Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Fettuccine 12.3 oz Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Fettuccine 32.8 oz Home Chef Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo 12.5 oz FreshRealm has notified Walmart and Kroger to remove this meal from their shelves and inventory. Consumers who have purchased the meal should destroy it or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. Out of an abundance of caution, FreshRealm is recalling the product while the investigation proceeds. The investigation will focus on how Listeria may have entered the product, and whether it entered from a FreshRealm facility, or through any of the ingredients that FreshRealm received from external ingredient suppliers. FreshRealm remains committed to the highest standards of food safety and is working closely with the Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to provide full transparency and access throughout the process. FreshRealm is issuing this voluntary recall strictly as a precautionary step with a full commitment to public health and safety. The company has not received any direct reports of illness associated with the product and has received information on cases from the regulatory agencies, including that four consumers have reported eating the chicken alfredo product. Seventeen total cases are being investigated by the regulatory agencies, including three deaths and one pregnancy loss. The recalled product has not been established as a cause of any of these cases. This voluntary recall does not apply to any other FreshRealm produced products. Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Less commonly, persons outside these risk groups are affected. Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider. Consumers with questions about this recall may contact FreshRealm's customer service at 888-244-1562.
