WNBA set to close out All-Star weekend with exhibition game between Team Clark and Team Collier
Captain Caitlin Clark was unable to play for her team because of a groin injury she suffered earlier this week. The Indiana Fever star was still part of the team, expected to act as a coach at times during the game.
While not having Clark playing in the game put a damper on the weekend for the local fans, they were treated to a solid 3-point contest that saw New York's Sabrina Ionescu win for the second time in three years on Friday night. Her Liberty teammate Natasha Cloud won the skills competition.
The game also featured rookies Paige Bueckers, Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen making up the largest rookie contingent at the game since 2011. Citron and Iriafen are on Team Clark, and Bueckers is a starter for Napheesa Collier's team.
The replacements
Kelsey Mitchell of the Indiana Fever and Jackie Young of the Las Vegas Aces were inserted into the starting lineup for Team Clark replacing Clark and Satou Sabally of Phoenix. Mitchell received a loud ovation from the fans who were happy to have another one of their players in the starting lineup.
New rules
The game featured once again a 4-point shot that was 28-feet from the rim — 6 feet farther than the current 3-point line. The game also included a 20-second shot clock instead of the normal 24 and the ability for teams to substitute during live play. There also were no free throws shot — not that there usually are many in an All-Star Game — until the final two minutes of the game. Instead players were automatically awarded the points All four rules had been used at some point during previous All-Star Games, but not all in the same one.

More than $308 million was spent on sports and trading cards online in July to set an industry record for the second consecutive month. The highest mark recorded by data tool Card Ladder, July's total eclipses the previous record of $306 million from June. Prior to June, March was the highest recorded month in Card Ladder's database with $303 million in total transactions. The record total can continue to rise as previously unrecorded sales from July are retroactively added to the database. It also doesn't include in-person sales from shows such as the National Sports Collectors Convention, which reported record attendance last week. More than 5.5 million total transactions were logged by Card Ladder in July, the second-most recorded in the tool's database behind only the 5.6 million recorded in March. The record month was largely driven by eBay, which had more than $266 million in sales recorded by Card Ladder. Fanatics Collect had the second-highest total with just under $23 million. Heritage finished with roughly $10.5 million, while Alt sold $7.3 million. Caitlin Clark's 2024 Panini Rookie Royalty WNBA Flawless Logowoman 1/1 was the most expensive card to sell in July after fetching $660,000 in Fanatics Collect's July Premier Auction. That result is the highest ever for a women's sports card at public auction. Third-party grading tracker GemRate reported 2.3 million cards were graded in July. US women's national team knocked off top spot by Spain in FIFA's latest rankings
ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) — The U.S. was knocked off the top spot in FIFA's latest women's rankings by world champion Spain. Spain regained the No. 1 position despite losing to England in the final of the European Championship last month. The U.S. held the top position since August last year after winning gold at the Paris Olympics. Spain was No. 1 from December 2023 to June last year after its World Cup triumph. The latest rankings were released by world governing body FIFA on Thursday. Brazil dropped three positions and is seventh despite successfully defending the Copa America to win its ninth continental title. Sweden and France were big movers after impressive showings at the Euros. ___

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison to have surgery on ruptured ACL
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — England midfielder James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured ACL, Tottenham said Thursday. Maddison was injured during Spurs' preseason friendly against Newcastle in Seoul. No timeframe was given for his recovery. 'His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team,' Tottenham said in a statement. 'Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur wishes James a full and speedy recovery." It is the latest blow for the 28-year-old Maddison, who missed last season's Europa League final with a knee injury. "We will be supporting him every step of the way,' Tottenham said. ___
