Staying charged up and connected on the go is essential when you're on holiday, whether it's for navigating new places, sharing photos or staying in touch with loved ones back home. Carrying a portable charger is a fuss-free way to power up away from home.
Amazon has slashed the price of a highly rated power bank from £199 to just £24.99. Given a 4.8 out of five-star rating by savvy shoppers, the CFIAI Power Bank has a useful LED display panel and aims to fully charge an iPhone in under four hours.
The portable charger includes two built-in cables - one USB-C and one Lightning - that are compatible with most Android and iPhone devices. The integrated design reduces the need for carrying extra cables and helps prevent tangling in transit.

New nuclear manufacturing hub in Deeside to create 200 jobs

Boccard, an international engineering, manufacturing, construction and maintenance company headquartered in Lyon, France, opened the new facility on Deeside Industrial Estate on Wednesday (July 16). The strategic hub is seen as a vital move in developing a supply chain capable of meeting the government's nuclear build programme, following its commitment to invest £17bn in the sector. It is one of the UK's largest supply chain hubs for the nuclear industry, providing infrastructure components for UK nuclear power stations including Hinkley Point C in Somerset and Sizewell C in Suffolk. The facility will manufacture components including pipework, supports, tanks and modular systems. With experience from its participation in 44 of the 56 producing reactors in France, Boccard's new development further enhances the UK's reputation as a strategic location for the advancement of nuclear technologies. It will also provide the UK and Europe with the means to strengthen energy resilience and secure supply. As the transition from fossil fuels to greener sources accelerates, the operation will support the need for access to adequate, reliable, and affordable clean energy. Bruno Boccard, chairman of Boccard, said: "Our new facility in North Wales is a milestone in our century-long history and part of our broader European expansion. "Our ambition is to be a driving force in the UK's nuclear renaissance, while supporting the country's decarbonisation and energy sovereignty goals." He added: "The UK government's historic support marks a turning point for the nuclear sector, shifting focus to building a world-class supply chain and attracting top talent. "As a leading manufacturer, we look forward to sharing best practices and collaborating to create a nuclear hub in North Wales and across the UK." On the production line at the new Boccard nuclear components manufacturing facility at Deeside (Image: Boccard) Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, Rebecca Evans, said: 'The opening of Boccard's new nuclear components manufacturing facility in Deeside clearly signals that Wales is strategically placed to play a central role in the future nuclear supply chain. 'With a rapidly growing skilled workforce and the presence of major suppliers like Boccard, North Wales is primed to attract further investment into this expanding sector and unlock significant growth for the Welsh economy. 'Since the start of this Senedd term, we have directly invested £600 million in Welsh businesses, creating and safeguarding 40,000 jobs. The hundreds of jobs created by the opening of Boccard's new manufacturing facility, which is backed by more than £1 million in Welsh Government funding, forms part of this success story." MORE NEWS: She added: 'Wales is becoming an important location for inward investment. Last year saw 65 projects - a 23% increase on the previous financial year. This was the second highest increase of any nation or region of the UK.' Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said: 'The people of North Wales are set to feel the benefits of our plans to kickstart a golden age of new nuclear. This new manufacturing facility demonstrates the benefits that nuclear power can bring to every corner of the country – building up British supply chains and creating jobs and economic growth. 'The biggest nuclear building programme in a generation will also help protect family finances, take back control of our energy, and tackle the climate crisis.'

Competition watchdog is on the prowl so business must be alert

A recent investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority into Amazon in some ways typifies the regulator's old way of doing things. Yes, the investigation centred around potentially fake or misleading reviews, which is very much an area of focus for the authority today, but this investigation started well before the new Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 came into effect. The case appears to have dragged on for almost half a decade and, after some back-and-forth between Amazon and the regulator, it has ended with Amazon providing undertakings to promise to take enhanced measures to tackle fake reviews on its platform. Provided it does so, Amazon will not face any financial penalties. Importantly, there is no finding of any breach. Amazon has promised to enhance its efforts to tackle fake reviews DARRYL DYCK/THE CANADIAN PRESS/AP Following the legislation coming into force in April this year, the authority's investigations will take on a different complexion. The organisation now has strong powers to investigate businesses and compel co-operation under threat of large daily fines, to conduct the investigation in a swift manner and to decide for itself — without needing to persuade the courts — whether the business under investigation has breached consumer law. If it concludes there has been a breach, the authority can impose a range of sanctions, including a financial penalty of up to 10 per cent of a business's annual global turnover. These are not theoretical powers — as the authority has made clear, it intends to use them, so large fines may become the norm. Unlike the Amazon case, which rumbled on for several years, the watchdog is now committed to conducting and concluding investigations quickly. Businesses under investigation will have significantly less time to gather information and prepare their responses, and the authority is much less likely to engage in protracted negotiations over undertakings. If undertakings are involved — most likely in addition to, rather than instead of, financial penalties — the CMA will want them to be crisp. And it will punish breaches of those undertakings with further financial penalties. This means retailers doing business in the UK — including those headquartered outside the country — will need to ensure they are complying with all the latest rules and guidance. It is advisable to focus on the authority's high priority areas, including fake and misleading reviews, which means that businesses can no longer take a hands-off approach to hosting them. Other areas include pricing and discount claims, and hidden fees. The CMA will also be looking at a range of other unfair commercial behaviour, including aggressive practices and misleading actions or omissions, across a range of businesses. Meanwhile, consumer organisations will be doing even more to draw to the authority's attention claims and activities by businesses that breach the law. Wildlife Trusts Wales Warns Sustainable Farming Scheme 'Falls Short for Nature'

Wildlife Trusts Wales has said that the Welsh Government's Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS) 'fails to adequately address the urgent climate and nature crisis'. It says it welcomes the move towards a whole-farm approach with the goal of making Welsh farming more sustainable. However, the details released only cover the Universal Tier, which appears to maintain the status quo, it said. It falls short of addressing the pressing nature and climate challenges, the organisation said. Wildlife Trusts Wales said that Welsh farming was currently unsustainable both economically and environmentally. Over the past decade, the number of farms has decreased, resulting in 9,000 job losses, it said, adding that farming continues to be the primary driver of biodiversity loss and greenhouse gas emissions in Wales. The SFS should be a vehicle for change, it said, enabling sustainable food production and transitioning to sustainable land management. Financial support and recognition through the Social Value Payments for carbon storage, air quality, and recreation access are a step in the right direction, it added. The organisation welcomed the tapering of the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS), which it said had offered poor value for money. These tapered funds will now go to the proposed Options and Collaborative tiers and they have the potential to support nature friendly farming, but details of these tiers are still lacking, it added. The organisation said: 'We commend the Welsh Government for its transparency and commitment to engaging all stakeholders throughout the SFS review process, including the Roundtable and other forums over the past year.' Rachel Sharp, Director of Wildlife Trusts Wales, said: 'While we welcome elements of the Sustainable Farming Scheme, we remain deeply concerned that the final version will not adequately address the climate and nature crises. Welsh farming is in crisis—fewer farms, fewer jobs, and increasing environmental damage. We need to see an increased budget for the SFS, specifically for the Options and Collaborative tiers, to help farmers transition to nature-friendly farming practices. Only farmers can restore nature and reduce the devastating impacts of climate change, including flooding and droughts.' Wildlife Trusts Wales is calling on the Welsh Government to ensure that the Options and Collaborative tiers of the SFS create a step forward for sustainable farming, and a meaningful shift toward nature recovery and climate resilience. A stronger, more comprehensive scheme will protect Wales' nature and ensure a viable future for farmers, it said.
