Rangers progress to Champions League play-off despite defeat to Viktoria Plzen

The Light Blues took a 3-0 lead to the Czech Republic for the second leg of the third qualifier but that impressive performance split a 1-1 draw at Motherwell and another damaging 1-1 draw at home to Dundee which dented title hopes after just two William Hill Premiership fixtures.
Russell Martin's men were again lacklustre in a tepid first half but some life was injected into the tie in the 41st minute when striker Rafiu Durosinmi opened the scoring for the home side.
Midfielder Lyall Cameron levelled on the hour but still gave up chances and substitute Svetozar Markovic restored Plzen's lead in the 83rd minute, with Miroslav Koubek's side left to rue a series of missed opportunities to turn the tie around.
Rangers fans had complained during after another poor domestic performance and result on Saturday.
Martin made two changes, club captain James Tavernier coming in for injured right-back Max Aarons and midfielder Nicolas Raskin in for Joe Rothwell.
It was a low quality first half.
Gers goalkeeper Jack Butland had to clutch a series of cross balls out of the air, albeit he was tested by Amar Memic's powerful drive from distance.
Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers was crowded out in the Plzen box on a couple of occasions, although in the 29th minute he appeared to be barged by centre-back Sampson Dweh inside the box but Polish referee Szymon Marciniak ignored penalty claims.
Before that, Butland made a great save from Lukas Cerv and when home attacker Prince Adu muscled his way past Tavernier he should have hit the target but instead fired wide.
However, Viktoria Plzen's goal did come when left-back Jefte all too easily allowed Memic to speed past him onto a raking free-kick and cut the ball back for Durosinmi to knock into the net from eight yards.
Five minutes after the restart, Memic fired an angled drive inches past the far post before Adu's header was comfortably saved by Butland.
There was more concern for Rangers five minutes later when Dessers had to be helped off and replaced by Danilo and when his shot from a Mohamed Diomande cutback went towards goal, Cameron redirected the ball into the net from 19 yards.
The goal should have settled Rangers down but in the 70th minute, Plzen substitute Christophe Kabongo fired over the crossbar from 12 yards before Matej Vydra headed wide.
And with 15 minutes remaining, after Rangers defender John Souttar had conceded possession needlessly, Butland made a great save from an Adu drive on the turn to prevented a Plzen goal before making another great reaction save from substitute Milan Havel's close-range header and a save from Vydra.
The second goal did come when Markovic headed in from a Kabongo cross, but the overall deficit could not be cut.
It was another step forward for Rangers in terms of their European journey but Martin still has so much work on his hands with regards the rebuild of the team.

Philippe Clement 'offered' management return but ex Rangers boss puts mega money deal on hold

Clement has been out of work since being axed by the Ibrox side in February Former Rangers boss Philippe Clement has been offered a mega-money return to management in China. ‌ The Belgian was hired to replace Michael Beale in October 2023 - but he lasted just 16 months before being axed being shown the door. ‌ His tenure was on the brink after the nightmare Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Queen's Park in February - before defeat to St Mirren two weeks later led to the 51-year-old being shown the door by the Rangers ' powerbrokers. ‌ Now, Nieuwsblad report that former Chinese Super League winners Shandong Taishan are keen to bring in Clement as their next boss. Peng Han currently holds the hot seat on an interim basis but the club want a European manager going forward - and Clement is "high on the list" of targets. It is claimed that a €1million-per-year contract has been put on the table after initial contact with the former Monaco and Club Brugge gaffer's representatives. The deal would see Clement take up the role in January 2026 - following the end of the current campaign in China. However, it is claimed that the axed Ibrox boss is keen to land another job in Europe and is in no rush to commit to Shandong. It is noted the situation could "change quickly" with Clement weighing up his options after undergoing hip surgery earlier in the summer. ‌ Speaking earlier in the summer, Clement explained his disappointing tenure in Glasgow stating: "They (the board) said we know we don't have the money that Celtic has for the moment. "It was quite an old squad. So we know we're going to need four, five, maybe six transfer windows to gain money and to close this gap with Celtic. "And it starts with getting young players in, develop them, make them better and sell them to build the club again where it should be. ‌ "The board was afraid to say these things towards the fans because they were already very angry about the stadium issue. I was the only one speaking in the club because there was nobody any more." Wesley Ward ‘excited' to mount Morny challenge with Outfielder

The Speightstown colt made a huge impression on his racecourse debut at Churchill Downs in May and looked tailor-made to add to Ward's tally of a dozen winners at Royal Ascot. However, he was ruled out of the the trip to Britain following a late setback and for the first time in a decade his trainer did not have a runner at the summer showpiece meeting in Berkshire. But two months on, Ward is gunning for more Group One glory on European soil in a race he has previously won with No Nay Never (2013), Lady Aurelia (2016) and Campanelle (2020). 'Outfielder left Keeneland yesterday (Wednesday), so away we go,' he said. 'He's flying right now, doing great and everything is wonderful. He's had some excellent morning breezes and I'm so excited to get this guy going. 'He won bounding away on his only start. It was a little bit of a rush job to get him to Ascot and he told us he hadn't quite recovered from his first effort to be ready for his next, but now he's ready.' No Nay Never, Lady Aurelia and Campanelle had all struck Royal Ascot gold before following up at Deauville and while Ward admits Outfielder lacks that high-level match practice, he feels there is some upside in the fact he will line up fresh. 'He doesn't have quite the experience the others did because the others had two runs. They'd all run at home and run at Ascot,' the trainer added. 'This horse does have a bit better spacing in that all the others came back to America after Ascot and then had to travel again back to France, so he's got better spacing from race to race. 'His last workout was an eye-opener at Keeneland. He worked in company with a horse called Longshoreman, who is out of Lady Pauline, who actually ran at Ascot in a race prior to the Royal meeting a few years ago and finished second. 'Longshoreman finished second on his debut at Keeneland and then bounded away by many lengths, just like Outfielder did, so when we worked them together last week I was kind of unsure what would happen, but Outfielder just ran away from him. 'He would relish fast ground, that's for sure. It's always a question mark at Deauville, but right now he's doing great and we're excited about running him.' Ward is named as a part-owner of Outfielder alongside Kia Joorabchian's Amo Racing operation and former professional baseball player Jayson Werth, who is set to make the trip to France. Ward, who also confirmed Amo Racing's retained rider David Egan is set to be on board, said: 'Jayson is a wonderful guy and it's great to have a great sportsman like him be involved in such a nice horse. We're excited about that as well.'
