UoM defers dual-degree launch
Chennai: The syndicate of the (UoM) deferred the decision to allow students pursue two degrees at the same time. According to officials, a decision will be taken after unveiling the State Education Policy (SEP) for higher education. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to the draft guidelines, students pursuing a degree in regular mode will be allowed to pursue a degree in distance mode simultaneously from this academic year (2025-26). Students studying in distance mode programmes will be allowed to enroll in another distance mode programme. The university placed the draft guidelines for the approval of the syndicate on Monday. "The state govt is expected to unveil the SEP for higher education soon. So, the higher education department wanted to defer a decision on introducing dual degree at UoM," a syndicate member said. "This initiative would allow students to pursue a degree of their choice in addition to what they are studying. It cannot be seen as a suggestion from National Education Policy (NEP) alone. This also would have helped the university to increase enrollment in distance mode courses," said a senior professor from the varsity. The (UGC) issued a notification in 2022, and the university decided to implement the same from 2022-23. Professors said this was one of the student-centric initiatives by the UGC. The state govt also informed the syndicate that all the faculty members will be recruited by Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB). More than two-thirds of its faculty positions are lying vacant. The syndicate also decided to withdraw the agenda to reduce pay scale for existing non-teaching staff following a protest. The govt also informed that the non-teaching staff would be recruited by TNPSC," another syndicate member said. Syndicate members said there was opposition to handing over the university's land at Purasawalkam to CMDA for constructing a public library and co-working space. The syndicate also allowed a dual degree programme with Melbourne University. The university is already offering a three-year BS blended programme in collaboration with Melbourne University. Now, these students will have an opportunity to pursue a two-year basic programme at the University of Madras and a two-year advanced level with Melbourne University.
