Immanuel Feyi-Waboso picked for England tour despite two-match ban

The Guardian9 hours ago

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso has been included in England's squad for the summer tour of Argentina and the US despite a suspension that rules him out of two of the three fixtures.
Feyi-Waboso was sent off after 33 minutes of his first appearance in six months during an England XV's 26-24 defeat by France at Twickenham on Saturday. He endured a torrid comeback, twice dropping the ball before he was sent to the sin-bin for his clothesline tackle on the French fly-half Antoine Hastoy – his yellow card subsequently upgraded to red.
On Sunday, Feyi-Waboso was handed a three-match ban, which will be reduced to two provided he completes 'tackle school'. As a result, the 22-year-old wing misses the two Tests against Argentina next month but is available to face USA in Washington.
If his inclusion in the 36-man squad – co-captained by Jamie George and George Ford – is a surprise, it demonstrates just how important a player Steve Borthwick considers Feyi-Waboso. Before last Saturday, he had not played since December because of a shoulder injury after his return was delayed amid confusion as to whether he would undergo surgery.
It is understood, however, that Borthwick sees value in having Feyi-Waboso with the squad in Argentina with an eye on the future as well as to provide competition to the other wings in training with Will Muir, Cadan Murley and Tom Roebuck selected. Feyi-Waboso's inclusion means he will stay fresh should the British & Irish Lions come calling but, as things stand, his ban does not expire until after Andy Farrell's side have played their first Test against Australia.
Feyi-Waboso was handed an enhanced contract by the Rugby Football Union last October and is sure to be on the list that Borthwick names after the summer tour. That England do not have their usual week's training camp before their autumn Tests may also explain why the head coach believes Feyi-Waboso warrants a place in the summer squad.

Elsewhere, Borthwick has made two changes to the squad that was announced last Monday to prepare for the fixture last weekend. Ben Curry comes in for Jack Kenningham while Raffi Quirke is replaced by Harry Randall. Both Curry and Randall were with the squad for rehabilitation last week but have been deemed fit to make the touring party. George Furbank and Fraser Dingwall were also rehabbing last week but have not been considered for selection.

In total, Borthwick has selected 10 uncapped players with Muir joined by Bath teammates Max Ojomoh and Guy Pepper. The Gloucester trio of Seb Atkinson, Charlie Atkinson and Arthur Clark are also selected along with Oscar Beard, Joe Carpenter, Luke Northmore and Emmanuel Iyogun.
'The three-Test series is a huge challenge and a valuable opportunity for the continued development of this squad,' Borthwick said. 'For some of the younger players, this will be their first experience of touring overseas with England. Travelling together helps strengthen team bonds and offers a valuable chance for new players to integrate into our environment.'

Simone Biles shares cryptic message amid Riley Gaines trans athlete feud after deleting X account

Simone Biles might have deleted her X account after her feud with Riley Gaines, but the Olympian is still speaking out on Instagram. Biles apologized for getting personal while attacking Gaines for her anti-trans campaigning earlier this month, telling the former swimmer to 'bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a male.' After intensifying scrutiny, the Olympian deactivated her account on Sunday but shared a quote on her Instagram story on Monday that read: 'Strength is what we gain from the madness we survive'. Biles initially sparked her feud with Gaines when the OutKick host criticized a Minnesota high school softball team for competing with a trans pitcher. During her swimming career, Gaines competed against trans athlete Lia Thomas at an NCAA meet in Atlanta, tying for fifth. 'You're truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser,' Biles wrote on X three weeks ago after Gaines called out the Minnesota team. 'You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports. 'Maybe a transgender category IN ALL sports!! But instead… You bully them… One things for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around!!!!!' Four days later, Biles publicly apologized on X, writing: 'I wanted to follow up from my last tweets. I've always believed competitive equity & inclusivity are both essential in sport. 'The current system doesn't adequately balance these important principles, which often leads to frustration and heated exchanges, and it didn't help for me to get personal with Riley, which I apologize for.' Gaines replied: 'I accept Simone's apology for the personal attacks including the ones where she body-shamed me. I know she knows what this feels like. She's still the greatest female gymnast of all time.' In a lengthy apology, Biles also admitted she didn't have the answers on how to include trans athletes in sports in a way that keeps everyone happy - seemingly acknowledging how polarazing her criticism of Gaines had been. Biles wrote: 'These are sensitive, complicated issues that I truly don't have the answers or solutions to, but I believe it starts with empathy and respect. I was not advocating for policies that compromise fairness in women's sports. My objection is to be singling out children for public scrutiny in ways that feel personal and harmful. 'Individual athletes — especially kids — should never be the focus of criticism of a flawed system they have no control over. 'I believe sports organizations have a responsibility to come up with rules supporting inclusion while maintaining fair competition. We all want a future for sport that is fair, inclusive, and respectful.' Biles deleted her account on X over the weekend after the Gaines feud had spilled out Biles' apology was shared by her husband - the NFL player for the Chicago Bears, Jonathan Owens - on Instagram. Gaines caught Biles' eye by mocking the Minnesota state softball champions Champlin Park, who won their competition with a dominant trans pitcher in Marissa Rothenberger. She retweeted a picture of a team celebration on X, writing: 'Comments off lol. To be expected when your star player is a boy.' Gaines had also made her opposition clear on the controversial AB Hernandez, who has even faced protests from her own competititors while competing in California last month. One athlete, who finished second to Hernandez at a different meet last month, waited for male-born Hernandez to step down from the podium before taking what Gaines decribed as her 'rightful place' in the No 1 spot for a picture - while also describing Hernandez as 'a fraud'. Days after Biles went after her on social media, Gaines announced she is pregnant wth her first child.

Athletics break ground on $1.75B stadium on Las Vegas Strip

June 23 - The Athletics organization held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for its new $1.75 billion stadium in Las Vegas. The team, which is playing its home games in West Sacramento, Calif. this season following its offseason exit from longtime home Oakland, was represented by team owner John Fisher and president Marc Badain among others at the groundbreaking on the Las Vegas Strip. "It's an epic moment for our 124-year-old franchise," Fisher said in thanking several civic leaders in the Las Vegas area, as well as MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, also in attendance at the event. It was a remarkable scene for Fisher, who last year was quoted about the franchise being poised to lose $40 million due to a lack of a new stadium, after failing to come to agreement with authorities in Oakland on parameters for a project to save professional baseball in Oakland. Instead, he struck a deal with Clark County, noting that his family was still contributing the majority of the financing. Badain was hired by the Athletics in March following his successful stewardship of the relocation of the Raiders to Vegas and the construction of the Raiders' new stadium, Allegiant Stadium. "It's an honor," Badain said, when asked about being involved with two stadium projects. "Today's a real accomplishment for everyone in the Athletics organization." The new ballpark, with a planned capacity of 33,000, is not expected to be completed until 2028, leaving the Athletics to continue playing at Sacramento's Sutter Health Park (the home of the minor leagues' Sacramento River Cats) until then. The Athletics currently sit in last place in the American League West at 32-48. "These projects, they probably look like they happen pretty quickly," Fisher said. "The reality is there is an incredible amount of work, time and effort from so many people's involvement to even bring us to today. "Our goal is to continue to build upon what we have, and building a team is like building anything else. Sometimes it takes more time than you want it to. It's like building the stadium. And we think that we have the pieces to make ourselves really successful." --Field Level Media

Reds designate INF Jeimer Candelario for assignment

June 23 - The Cincinnati Reds designated infielder Jeimer Candelario for assignment on Monday, just halfway through a three-year, $45 million contract he signed before the 2024 season. Candelario, 31, had been on the injured list since late April due to a lumbar spine strain. The Reds reinstated him from the IL on Monday in order to DFA the veteran first and third baseman. "At the end of the day, you have to look at it as a sunk cost because you can't bring a player that's not going to help his team win," Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall told The Athletic. Candelario played in 22 games, with 12 starts at third base and seven starts at first, before going on the IL. He batted an abysmal .113 (9-for-80) with two home runs and 10 RBIs. In his first season in Cincinnati, he made 112 appearances and batted .225 with 20 homers, 23 doubles and 56 RBIs. Following stints with the Chicago Cubs (2016-17) and Detroit Tigers (2017-22), Candelario had one of the best seasons of his career in 2023, split between the Washington Nationals and Cubs. He batted .251 with career highs of 22 homers and 70 RBIs, prompting the Reds to pursue him in free agency. The Reds are moving forward with Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Noelvi Marte and Spencer Steer as their main corner infielders. --Field Level Media
