Athletics break ground on $1.75B stadium on Las Vegas Strip

Reuters6 hours ago

June 23 - The Athletics organization held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for its new $1.75 billion stadium in Las Vegas.
The team, which is playing its home games in West Sacramento, Calif. this season following its offseason exit from longtime home Oakland, was represented by team owner John Fisher and president Marc Badain among others at the groundbreaking on the Las Vegas Strip.
"It's an epic moment for our 124-year-old franchise," Fisher said in thanking several civic leaders in the Las Vegas area, as well as MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, also in attendance at the event.
It was a remarkable scene for Fisher, who last year was quoted about the franchise being poised to lose $40 million due to a lack of a new stadium, after failing to come to agreement with authorities in Oakland on parameters for a project to save professional baseball in Oakland.
Instead, he struck a deal with Clark County, noting that his family was still contributing the majority of the financing.
Badain was hired by the Athletics in March following his successful stewardship of the relocation of the Raiders to Vegas and the construction of the Raiders' new stadium, Allegiant Stadium.
"It's an honor," Badain said, when asked about being involved with two stadium projects. "Today's a real accomplishment for everyone in the Athletics organization."
The new ballpark, with a planned capacity of 33,000, is not expected to be completed until 2028, leaving the Athletics to continue playing at Sacramento's Sutter Health Park (the home of the minor leagues' Sacramento River Cats) until then.
The Athletics currently sit in last place in the American League West at 32-48.
"These projects, they probably look like they happen pretty quickly," Fisher said. "The reality is there is an incredible amount of work, time and effort from so many people's involvement to even bring us to today.
"Our goal is to continue to build upon what we have, and building a team is like building anything else. Sometimes it takes more time than you want it to. It's like building the stadium. And we think that we have the pieces to make ourselves really successful."

Four-run eighth propels Angels past Red Sox

June 24 - The Los Angeles Angels broke open a tie game with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning en route to a 9-5 victory over the visiting Boston Red Sox on Monday night. Christian Moore's sacrifice fly drove in LaMonte Wade Jr. to put Los Angeles in front 6-5, and the Angels made it 7-5 when Garrett Whitlock walked Taylor Ward with the bases loaded. Travis d'Arnaud's two-run single extended the lead to 9-5. Whitlock (5-1) allowed all four runs in the inning. Boston issued 11 walks in the loss. Zach Neto provided a solo home run for the Angels, and Trevor Story hit a solo home run for the Red Sox. Sam Bachman (1-0) earned the win for pitching a scoreless eighth. Kenley Jansen was removed from the game with an apparent injury after throwing four pitches in the ninth. Boston starter Walker Buehler surrendered five runs on three hits in four innings. He walked seven and struck out three. Buehler has allowed 21 earned runs in 16 1/3 innings this month. After the Red Sox took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run single by Wilyer Abreu and an RBI single by Ceddanne Rafaela, the Angels pushed five runs across in the bottom half of the inning. Neto's solo home run started the inning. After Jo Adell's RBI single scored Mike Trout, Buehler issued bases-loaded walks to Luis Rengifo and Moore before he hit Neto with the bases full. Eleven batters came to the plate in the inning. Boston pulled within a run in the fourth when Rafaela scored on Connor Wong's sacrifice fly to left. Red Sox manager Alex Cora was ejected by second base umpire Alan Porter with two outs in the fifth for arguing a no-obstruction call after Abraham Toro was thrown out sliding into second base. Boston tied the game in the sixth on Story's solo homer. --Field Level Media

Morning Bid: Trump touts 'forever' ceasefire, oil slides

A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Stella Qiu U.S. President Donald Trump surprised markets by announcing late on Monday that Israel and Iran had agreed to a complete ceasefire, potentially ending a 12-day conflict. In his own words, the ceasefire would last "forever". Investors are surely hoping it is real and will hold. It was only days ago that the U.S. launched strikes on Iran that risked drawing it into another costly foreign war. Oil prices duly slumped almost 3% on Tuesday, on top of an almost 9% tumble overnight as the immediate threat to the vital Strait of Hormuz shipping lane appeared to have lessened. U.S. crude futures are back at $66.80 per barrel, about the lowest since June 11 before Israel's attacks on Iran began. That is a relief for global inflation, which will make central bank efforts to tame inflation a little easier. But the situation is still very fluid. Missiles were still being launched from Iran towards Israel. Israeli media said a building had been struck and three people were killed in the missile strike on Beersheba. An Iranian official earlier confirmed that Tehran had agreed to a ceasefire, but the country's foreign minister said there would be no cessation of hostilities unless Israel stopped its attacks. Risk assets rallied nonetheless - S&P 500 futures rose 0.5% and Nasdaq futures were 0.7% higher. European stock markets are bracing for a strong rebound, with EUROSTOXX 50 futures up 1.2%. The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS), opens new tab gained 2.1% while Japan's Nikkei (.N225), opens new tab rallied 1.1%. South Korean shares (.KS11), opens new tab hit their highest since September 2021. The beleaguered dollar, which had found some safe-haven bids from the Middle East conflict, was on the back foot again and fell 0.5% to 145.45 yen , having come off a six-week top of 148 yen overnight. With the Israel-Iran conflict potentially easing, investor focus shifts to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's upcoming appearance before Congress. The Fed has not made a move on interest rates this year due to the inflationary impact of Trump's tariffs. But some Fed officials are breaking ranks with Powell, whose hawkish view on rates has drawn Trump's ire. Fed's Michelle Bowman said overnight that she was open to cutting rates in July, while Governor Christopher Waller said he would also consider a rate cut next month. More Fed officials will be speaking tonight, with New York Fed President John Williams giving keynote remarks in New York and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack due to speak on monetary policy in London. In Europe, central bankers are busy too. Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey will make public appearances in London and a few ECB officials will be giving speeches. Key developments that could influence markets on Tuesday: -- Fed Chair Jerome Powell appears before Congress, along with public appearances by other Fed officials including New York Fed President John Williams, Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack and Boston Fed President Susan Collins. -- NATO annual summit begins in the Hague -- Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey and chief economist Huw Pill appear at a conference on Britain's return to the gold standard in 1925. -- Germany IFO business survey -- U.S. Conference Board consumer confidence -- Canadian CPI for May

Tyrese Haliburton breaks silence on Achilles tear as girlfriend shares heartbreaking behind-the-scenes pics

Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton has released an emotional statement after tearing his Achilles in his team's Game 7 loss to Oklahoma City Thunder. After a what replays showed was a pop in his lower right leg in the first quarter, Halliburton was left in tears and screaming in agony after hitting the court. He had played through the pain barrier with a calf issue in the same leg which may have contributed to a new issue that will now sidelines him for the start of next season. Without their star man, his Pacers team went on to lose the decider 91-103 in a cruel ending for a player who had lit up the postseason. After having surgery to repair his tea r, the 25-year-old Haliburton shared an emotinal statement from his hospital bed on Monday night, barely 24 hours on from sustaining the injury. 'Man. Don't know how to explain it other than shock. Words cannot express the pain of this letdown,' Haliburton wrote. 'The frustration is unfathomable. I've worked my whole life to get to this moment and this is how it ends? Makes no sense. 'Now that I've gotten surgery, I wish I could count the number of times people will tell me I'm going to 'come back stronger'. What a cliche lol, this s*** sucks. My foot feels like dead weight fam. 'But what's hurting most I think is my mind. Feel like I'm rambling, but I know this is something I'll look back on when I'm through this, as something I'm proud I fought through. It feels good to let this s*** out without y'all seeing the kid ugly cry. 'At 25, I've already learned that God never gives us more than we can handle. I know I'll come out on the other side of this a better man and a better player. And honestly, right now, torn Achilles and all, I don't regret it. I'd do it again, and again after that, to fight for this city and my brothers. For the chance to do something special. 'Indy, I'm sorry. If any fan base doesn't deserve this, it's y'all. But together we are going to fight like hell to get back to this very spot, and get over this hurdle. I don't doubt for a second that y'all have my back, and I hope you guys know that I have yours. 'I think Kobe said it best when in this same situation. 'There are far greater issues/challenges in the world then a torn achilles. Stop feeling sorry for yourself, find the silver lining and get to work with the same belief, same drive and same conviction as ever.' And that's exactly right. 'I will do everything in my power to get back right. My journey to get to where I am today wasn't by happenstance, I've pushed myself every day to be great. And I will continue to do just that. 'The most important part of this all, is that I'm grateful. I'm grateful for every single experience that's led me here. I'm grateful for all the love from the hoop world. I don't 'have to' go through this, I get to go through this. 'I'm grateful for the road that lies ahead. Watch how I come back from this. So, give me some time, I'll dust myself off and get right back to being the best version of Tyrese Haliburton.' Haliburton's girlfriend, Jade Jones, also paid tribute to him on Monday. She posted a message on her Instagram as well as sharing a picture of Haliburton looking inconsolable in the locker room after getting hurt. 'What a year!!! What a bittersweet ending to it all. This team is SO special, beyond words,' she wrote. 'You have made a historic run for the Pacers that generations will be talking about!!! This season has made such a special imprint on my heart. One of the best things we have ever been a part of!!! Just know how much it meant to all of us.' Jones continued: 'The smile you have put on people's faces, the joy & excitement you have brought to this city. You have been nothing short of amazing. You are so selfless, brave, and strong! 'We have the best support system around us who will pull you through this! I will always be your biggest cheerleader. I will forever be so proud of you!! Our team's got you. We will be back, we're not finished yet! Gods plan, Gods timing. My superstar, I love you.'
