5 Things to know about new Colts' CB Xavien Howard
Navigating injuries at cornerback, the Indianapolis Colts signed former All-Pro Xavien Howard.
The addition of Howard will provide needed depth at cornerback, but he should find himself competing for playing time as well.
Let's begin getting to know the newest Colts' cornerback with five things to know about Howard.
Impressive ball production
Howard has showcased some flashy ball production throughout his career. After not logging an interception as a rookie in 2016, Howard recorded a whopping 29 interceptions from 2017 through 2023. This includes a league-high 10 interceptions in 2020.
Even when Howard hasn't come away with an interception, he's steadily gotten his hands on the ball. Over his eight NFL seasons, Howard has 95 pass deflections and led the league in that category in 2020 with 20 of them.
In six of Howard's eight seasons, he has logged at least 12 pass deflections and has three seasons with five-plus interceptions.
Xavien Howard is a former All-Pro
In that 2020 season, when Howard led the NFL in interceptions and pass deflections, he was a first-team All-Pro.
He was also a second-team All-Pro in 2018, when he recorded seven interceptions and 12 pass deflections. Howard is a four-time Pro Bowler as well.
"The one thing about him that always jumped off the tape ot me when he was at Baylor, the reason why he was drafted so high is he can go get the ball and he's proven that throughout his NFL career, that he's been an elite interceptor," Lou Anarumo said of Howard.
Howard played under Lou Anarumo previously
During Howard's first two seasons in the NFL, Anarumo was his defensive backs coach with the Miami Dolphins. So not only did Anarumo coach Howard, but he was in on Howard's evaluation during the 2016 pre-draft process.
As Anarumo described, Howard has played in a variety of different schemes, which should help him adjust to this new-look Colts' defense relatively quickly. While the calls and terminology will be different, there will be an overlap in responsibilities.
Xavien Howard's fit with the Colts
Howard didn't play in the NFL during the 2023 season, so there is going to be a ramp-up period required. But his experience and past production should put Howard firmly in the mix for playing time, given the injuries that the Colts are navigating at the cornerback position.
Jaylon Jones and JuJu Brents have missed most of training camp with hamstring injuries. Kenny Moore has a knee injury, Johnathan Edwards left Saturday's game with a concussion, and Justin Walley is on IR due to an ACL injury.
The starting spot opposite of Charvarius Ward remains up for grabs, and based on who is currently available, Samuel Womack and Alex Johnson are the top candidates to fill that role. Now Howard will be in that mix.
Anarumo is not concerned about Howard's time off
Howard's last snaps came during the 2023 season. He did not play in the NFL in 2024. However, Anarumo isn't concerned about that.
Howard's an experienced player, Anarumo has seen him work out, and the ball skills that he possesses just don't disappear.
"Last year with the Bengals, we worked him out back in December," Anarumo said. "So you've seen him move a little bit and look good and I just feel good about the athlete that he is. And maybe you could look at it as his legs got a year off to rest. So one thing I know is his ball skills and those things, they don't go away with time, and he still has those."

NFL preseason live updates: Commanders starters run through porous Bengals defense; are they moving on from Brian Robinson Jr.?
[NFL top storylines | NFL team feeds | NFL camp/preseason live blog] Three-year starting Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. appears to be on his way out. The Commanders may have demonstrated why Monday night. With Robinson sidelined amid reported trade rumors, Washington ran roughshod over a porous Bengals defense as both teams played their starters early. The Commanders exploded for a four-play, 73-yard touchdown drive on their opening possession without throwing a pass. Running back Chris Rodriguez broke free for a 40-yard run to set up quarterback Jayden Daniels for a 14-yard touchdown scramble through and past multiple hapless Bengals defenders. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Then came Jacory Croskey-Merritt's time to shine. The seventh-round rookie out of Arizona took the starring role on Washington's second drive with 32 rushing yards as the Commanders needed just three plays to score their second touchdown of the game. Croskey-Merritt capped the drive with a 27-yard touchdown run. By halftime, Rodriguez had six carries for 62 yards (10.3 ypc) and Croskey-Merritt had 32 yards on two carries (16 ypc). Deebo Samuel (1 carry, 19 yards) and Daniels (1 carry, 14 yards) had also gashed the Bengals defense for big gains. Washington tallied 130 yards on 13 first-half carries (10 yards per attempt) against a Bengals defense that looked just as bad as it did during the regular season in 2024. It's always hard to trust your eyes in the preseason. But Cincinnati's run defense did little to inspire confidence, while Washington may have set its running back room without Robinson in the mix. NFL top storylines Browns name Joe Flacco starting quarterback for Week 1: The Cleveland Browns announced Monday that Joe Flacco will start Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals, a move that has been expected for a while and is now official. That hardly ends the intrigue on the Browns' depth chart, though, with presumptive backup Kenny Pickett having yet to take an in-game snap this preseason due to injury, fifth-round rookie Shedeur Sanders still battling an oblique injury, and third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel having looked solid in his debut over the weekend. With Flacco getting playing time in Saturday's preseason finale, snaps will be even more scarce for the other three QBs on the roster. How will this shake out? Matthew Stafford returns to Rams practice: Breathe a sigh of relief, Los Angeles Rams fans and fantasy players. Matthew Stafford finally returned to practice on Monday after battling an aggravated disc in his back and took part in team drills. Head coach Sean McVay said he thought Stafford did a good job, but opted to play things carefully, deeming Stafford as day-to-day and week-to-week. McVay called it a "very fluid" situation and said while it was "great" that Stafford was able to get back to practice, the team will see how he responds the rest of the day and Tuesday. Browns sign WR Isaiah Bond, gave him lie detector test: The Cleveland Browns reportedly signed wide receiver Isaiah Bond to a three-year, $3 million deal Monday after he was not charged as part of a sexual assault investigation. Bond, 21, was expected to be a mid-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft but went undrafted after being arrested just two weeks before the draft. On Thursday, Bond was "no-billed" by a grand jury in Texas, meaning there was not enough evidence to charge him. As part of that diligence, the team apparently had Bond go through an independent polygraph test, per team general manager Andrew Berry. Jayden Daniels delivers a moment of panic — and magic — in preseason debut
A stocking cap on his head and a smile across his face, Jayden Daniels trotted down the Washington Commanders' sideline and into the tunnel at 8:36 p.m. Monday, the competitive portion of his night over less than 30 minutes after it began. The adulating crowd did not know it, but Daniels was offering proof that he really is human: He had to use the bathroom.
