Banerjee said that the Bengali migrant workers could go anywhere to work. 'While Bangladesh is a neighbouring country, why will you say that people talking in Bengali are Bangladeshis? Rohingyas are from Myanmar. How can they learn Bengali?' Banerjee said while responding to BJP's allegation on Rohingyas. The BJP has been alleging that Rohingyas have entered Bengal from Bangladesh and their names have been enrolled in the voter list, with the help of Trinamool Congress.

Attacking the BJP-led government at the Centre, she said that caste, creed and religion cannot be reason for deleting names from a voter list. 'Those who are Indian citizens and are voters of Bengal will vote here. Why will you discriminate against the voters of Bengal based on caste, creed and religion?' Banerjee questioned. 'A notification says that Bengali-speaking people will be deported. Our migrant workers are skilled. In India, one can travel anywhere,' she said.
On X, AITC wrote, 'Bengalis are being detained, branded as 'outsiders', and even deported while carrying valid documents in hand. From NRC notices to map erasure, the attacks aren't random, they're deliberate. It's time we connect the dots. Watch this and understand what's at stake.'

The Trinamool also claimed that migrant workers from Coochbehar, working in Gurugram, were being allegedly harassed by police in Haryana. Senior Trinamool leader Partha Pratim Roy claimed that several workers from Sitalkuchi block of Cooch Behar district, working as labourers in Gurugram in Haryana for a long time, were subject to police atrocities. "One of them called me tonight and informed me that they are being summoned to the police station on suspicion that they are Bangladeshis. Despite showing their voter cards and Aadhaar cards, the harassment is not stopping," Roy claimed.

Hounded for 10 years: Rahul Gandhi backs Robert Vadra amid ED crackdown

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Centre, accusing it of carrying out a decade-long "witch hunt" against his brother-in-law Robert Vadra, after the Enforcement Directorate filed its latest chargesheet against him."My brother-in-law has been hounded by this government for the last ten years. This latest chargesheet is a continuation of that witch hunt. I stand with Robert, Priyanka and their children as they face yet another onslaught of malicious, politically motivated slander and harassment," Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X. advertisement"I know that they are all brave enough to withstand any kind of persecution and they will continue to do so with dignity. The truth will eventually prevail," he added. The Leader of Opposition's remarks came a day after the ED filed a charge sheet against Vadra, who is married to Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, in connection with a money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in a land deal in Haryana. This is the first time any investigative agency has named the 56-year-old businessman in a criminal prosecution ED has attached 43 immovable properties across Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Gujarat worth over Rs 37 crore, allegedly linked to Vadra and his companies, including Sky Light Hospitality Pvt. Ltd, sources told news agency case stems from a 2018 FIR registered by Gurugram Police, which accused Vadra's firm of fraudulently purchasing 3.53 acres of land in Shikohpur village, Sector 83, Gurugram, in February 2008 through what investigators claim was a false declaration. The land was reportedly bought for Rs 7.5 crore from Onkareshwar Properties Pvt. who was questioned by the ED for three consecutive days in April, has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that the case is part of a "political vendetta" targeting him and his family, which includes Congress matriarch Sonia Gandhi and Rahul a statement, Vadra's office described the latest chargesheet as "nothing more than an extension of the political witch hunt by the present government". "As a law-abiding Indian citizen, Mr Vadra has always and will continue to extend his fullest cooperation to the authorities. He is confident that at the end of it all, the truth will prevail and he will be cleared of any wrongdoing," the statement added. Backing Vadra, the Congress called the chargesheet another attempt by the Modi government to "intimidate and persecute" its leaders. "The witch hunting of Shri Robert Vadra is another vicious attempt of the Modi Government to intimidate and persecute, which will fail miserably," Congress general secretary Randeep Surjewala said.- Ends

Tejashwi's 'mutton party' dig at PM ahead of his Bihar visit: He's coming again

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Friday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his visit to Bihar, fuelling the ongoing controversy over non-vegetarian feasts during the holy month of Sawan and accusing the BJP of "double standards".In a post on X, Tejashwi listed a sarcastic schedule for the Prime Minister's visit, claiming he would begin by "honouring leaders who hold mutton parties during Sawan".advertisement"First of all, he will feel proud to honour leaders who hold mutton parties during Sawan on stage in Motihari, publicly showcasing the double standards of his sermons. He will blame uncontrolled crime in Bihar on governments from five decades ago. He will unleash such a heavy downpour of 'jumlas' (rhetoric) that even Lord Indra will be embarrassed," Tejashwi Yadav said in a post in Hindi. "He will not announce whether Nitish Kumar will remain NDA's Chief Minister after the election. He will excessively use words like Jungle Raj, Opposition, Lalu Prasad, RJD, Muslims, etc," the former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister added. Along with his post, the Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly also shared an image which showed a cartoon potrayal of PM Modi with a note on paper which read: "Bihar bado bado ko deta hai sudhar, dekho! Ye dikhane lage hain pyaar. Fir aa rahe hain Bihar. (Bihar teaches lessons to the mighty, see! Now he is pretending to show love. He is coming back to Bihar again)Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to address a public rally in Motihari in East Champaran district today where he will inaugurate development projects worth over Rs 7,000 crore. Assembly elections in Bihar are most likely to be held later this controversy over non-veg feasts during holy months has remained politically sensitive in Bihar. Two years ago, the BJP attacked the Congress-RJD alliance after RJD chief Lalu Prasad hosted a mutton feast during Sawan, attended by Rahul Gandhi. Last year, Prime Minister Modi accused Tejashwi of insulting Hindu sentiments after a video showed him eating fish during Navratri — a clip the BJP still uses to hit back at the Tejashwi Yadav took a jibe at Union Minister and Janata Dal (United) leader Lalan Singh for hosting a "mutton party" in Lakhisarai district, which falls under the Munger Lok Sabha constituency, represented by him. "BJP would now say that it is 'punya' that Lalan Singh is feeding mutton to his people & workers, because he is their ally & a Union Minister. They won't say anything now. When PM comes here tomorrow, I hope he will speak on Lalan Singh, that he is feeding mutton in Sawan," the RJD leader told news agency ANI. - EndsMust Watch

Indian nurse on death row in Yemen: SC posts matter for further hearing on August 14

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court was on Friday informed that the execution of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, who is on death row for murder in Yemen, has been stayed. Attorney General R Venkataramani, appearing for the Centre, told a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta that "efforts are on" in the matter. The top law officer said the government wants Priya to come back safely. "They (government) are taking good care of whatever is possible," the bench observed. The counsel appearing for the petitioner said they have to first get pardon and then the issue of "blood money" would come. The petitioner informed the court that the execution has been postponed. The bench posted the matter for further hearing on August 14. The apex court was hearing a plea seeking a direction to the Centre to use diplomatic channels to save Priya, 38, facing execution in Yemen. The execution was earlier scheduled for July 16. Priya, a nurse from Palakkad district of Kerala, was convicted of murdering her Yemeni business partner in 2017. She was sentenced to death in 2020, and her final appeal was rejected in 2023. She is currently imprisoned in a jail in Sana'a, the capital of Yemen.
